July 8, 200719 yr Just because he's played good defense that last couple games doesn't mean he's fine now, I still expect more errors but that'll have to come with him gaining more experience. lolololololol you're sick lololololololol ...What?
July 8, 200719 yr Right when people start questioning hanley's range he shows it off some. He does seem like he's woken up a bit. Also, some one on here posted saying hanley isn't a team player he plays for himself or something like that. But when craig asked him questions about himself he answered back with comments about the team needing the wins and the pitching being good. So he obviously isn't self centered. just random thoughts. Shadez has always had excellent range, that has never been his problem. he is also sometimes trying to do to much I never questioned his range. but many people on here have been saying he should look into moving to the outfield that thats where he will become a superstar. and that he doesnt go for alot of balls and anything goes in between hanley and cabrera are an automatic hit. i saw nothing but great defense tonight from both hanley and cabrera

July 8, 200719 yr While the easy explanation for the apparent turnaround in Ramirez' defense would be being snubbed for the ASG I'm reminded it occurred immediately after Amezaga put on a school at shortstop, replete with webgems, when Hanley was ailing. Nothing like have some utility player teach a course on how he position should be played to wake a guy up. You never know what motivates people but whatever it was, it's a good thing. Let's hope we see alot of what we saw the last two nights throughout the second half. Not a bad theory. Amazega is know in the org as being the best defensive shortstop we have. And the AS snub could also have had something to do with it. But it was a deserved AS snub. There are far better defensive AS in the NL right now. A couple games after the voting is over dosen't change my mind on that. Miggy is playing up to his abilities at 3B right now. Those balls that were hits going between them seemed more a fault of Miggy's than Hanley's, IMO. Miggy would move to his left and then not make a real try at the ball. He was basically just blocking the view for Hanley. Hanley was making enough errors on his own, he didn't need the help from a team mate. And I gotta say that Jake is playing 1B better than I have ever seen him. Rarely would I see him stretch for balls like he has consistently as of late. My opinion is that those two guys playing to their abilities is making Hanley look much better. And Hanley has cranked it up a bit also.

July 8, 200719 yr He's gotten it together the past couple games, hoping its big step in the right direction.
July 8, 200719 yr Hanley feels he deserves to start the all star game. He is using that as motivation. Such a pleasure to see Hanley playing well both in the field and at the plate. So much fun to listen to Vin Scully drool over him as well the past couple of nights.

No, I actually like canada-marlin's "Well the Mets lost" posts. Gotta admire that type of optimism. In no way are my posts meant to be detrimental to him.

July 8, 200719 yr I thought the stats were a little more disparate but damn, Hanley has been so much better than Jose Reyes has. That .100 change in slugging percentages between the two is really telling.

I don't mean to hate because I think Andino is very gifted with the glove too, but he has 24 errors in AAA. Maybe it's because he is trying too much but you have to think atleast half of that are just dumb errors.
July 8, 200719 yr I'm sure someone can find stats to the contrary but Hanley has to be the worst defensive starting shortstop in baseball. And he's getting worse not better. Just precious. God you are a jerk. :lol For some reason, there is nothing on this site nearly as entertaining to me as the two of you going at it.

So much fun to listen to Vin Scully drool over him as well the past couple of nights. If Fredi hadn't experimented with Ramirez dropping him to 3rd in the order he would have close to 35 SBs and maybe 80 runs scored. As it is it is embarassing for Reyes to be trailing Ramirez in runs. i would like to see Shadez numbers in comparison to Jeter now

So much fun to listen to Vin Scully drool over him as well the past couple of nights. It truly is amazing. Old school stats (AKA triple crown numbers) show Hanley's a better player. New school numbers (OPS, RC) show Hanley's a better player. They play the same position in the same division, by no means is Reyes a defensive standout (or have we all forgotten the Mets moved him to second base), yet one is the "best player in baseball ©" and one is just a "schlub." Gotta love it.

Maybe it's because he is trying too much but you have to think atleast half of that are just dumb errors. I think it's probably mostly mental. He's got to be extremely frustrated that he's been playing pretty well lately and still has no shot of making it to the show. If it wasn't for Hanley, he'd probably be on the major league roster, at the very least as a late inning guy.
July 8, 200719 yr A couple of things on Andino (the first I believe has already been posted but it kind of sets up the second one)...from the Herald: "Not only did Ramirez enter the weekend tied for second in the majors with 14 errors, but shortstop prospect Robert Andino -- a potential trade chip -- leads all of Triple A by a wide margin with 23. But many of those have been the result of Andino getting to balls other shortstops wouldn't, and throwing wildly to first. The Marlins have kept Andino, a former Miami Southridge High standout, at shortstop, even though he has no future there behind Ramirez." http://www.miamiherald.com/588/story/156946.html PCL: Unpredictability makes shortstop 'Topes' attraction By James Staley (Contact) Friday, June 15, 2007 Sometimes he is a thief. Sometimes he is a philanthropist. Either way, Robert Andino, the 2007 edition, is a must-see attraction at shortstop. The suspense and adventure lies in the mystery. Will the gifted Isotopes infielder showcase his Spider-Man range and agility? Or will he miss the routine play? Andino's been wowing fans and frustrating hitters with his glove since high school. It's what inspired the Florida Marlins to make him a second-round draft pick. This season Baseball America labeled Andino the best defensive infielder in the Marlins organization with the best infield arm. "I like stealing base hits from people," said Andino before the Isotopes fell to the Oklahoma RedHawks 3-1 at home Thursday night. He's done that - diving, dashing, twirling and off-balance-mid-air-throwing his way to several improbable putouts this season. But Andino also has been more charitable in 2007, giving more players a free ride on the base paths. In 120 games with Albuquerque last season, the shortstop had 20 errors. He has 18 this year, through 68 games. At that pace, he would finish with 32. "I've seen him losing focus at times," Isotopes manager Dean Treanor said. "But the other night, I was watching him at short and he was ready for each pitch. It's not lackadaisical, . . . he's just not ready (sometimes) when that pitch is made. . . then he misplays the ball." Andino attributes the fielding mistakes to lapses in concentration. "It's just little things: taking your eye off the ball, trying to be too quick with the ball, stuff like that," he said. "If you take your eye off the ball, that's all it takes, one quick second." The miscues bother the proud fielder - Treanor noted Andino has worked on throwing, something he has improved from last season - but the increased number of errors hasn't hampered his play in other areas. Andino went 3-for-5 on Thursday, dropping a triple, a double and a single on the RedHawks. He had half of Albuquerque's hits. In the last six games, Andino's average has been .416. Isotopes hitting coach Steve Phillips said discipline at the plate has been a "big issue" for Andino during his young career. He led the Isotopes in strikeouts last season. But as Phillips noted, Andino is showing signs he can be selective. Thursday he saw 17 pitches through his first three at-bats and had two hits. "When he does swing at pitches early in the count, he's putting them in play hard as opposed to fouling them off and getting behind in the count," Phillips said. Andino saw three pitches in each of his final two at-bats. Both times he made solid contact, grounding out to short and converting his last time at the plate into a double. Andino's increased errors haven't irritated Treanor or Phillips. His hot bat helps. Both coaches seem calm, as though they expect him to solve the fielding glitch. It should stay that way as long as Andino shows more thief and less philanthropist. http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2007/jun/15/pc...-topes-attract/ With other guys coming up behind him through the organization and his star rising (PCL all-star, improved BA) if the Marlins don't have a place for him this may the right time move him, even if it's a lateral move for someone (another minorleaguer) at a position where we can use some help. But clearly the kid is getting his act together. I know he's only 23 but he's been around seemingly so long he kind of reminds you of Pablo Ozuna who took forever to find a place in the MLB but eventually did okay for himself.

July 9, 200719 yr and of course he's not good enough for the All-Star Game, or so says the fans :banghead I swear Baseball is so screwed up.....the best players should go period. Not the ones from NY or LA that people vote for because they have large fan bases. This is just another reason it will ALWAYS be difficult to attract big name free agents to the Marlins. We desparately need the GM & scouts to find diamonds in the rough, because no one of decent stature wil ever sign a FA contract with us.....because they know no matter how they play, they will be buried by the National Press. Gary Sheffield? Carlos Delgado? Sheff came over in a trade (anyone remember Trevor Hoffman as a Marlin?) I do think that FAs will be reluctant to sign here. Especially after the sign-and-dump that was Carlos Delgado.

Looking back it was a good trade because we needed Sheffield for the 1997 WS and had Nen waiting in the wings to be the closer. But I sure wish we would have had Hoff too :cool
July 9, 200719 yr By the way, who did we trade to get Bryan Harvey ? He was closer the first 2 seasons after Hoff was traded......right ?

The scouting report on Andino has always been that his glove his major league ready right now (and this was 2-3 years ago) and that if he could learn how to hit, he would find a starting role in the bigs. If not, he would be a utility guy at best.
