July 8, 200719 yr It's an opinion, it's great, but the only difference between a scout and most of us is they get paid for their opinions. I would say that's incredibly naive. Most scouts have been baseball lifers, so to assume that we (most of us not yet 25) know as much as they do (or have seen close to as many games, know what to look for, etc) is a bit over the top. But perhaps that's what you were shooting for..... While yes, a scouts opinion does hold a lot more ground than a poster on a forum (Afterall, there is a reason they are paid for it), it still boils down to just being an opinion, not fact. And I think that's all Swifty was getting at. I understand they're both just opinions, I'm saying though that because of a scout's background (as opposed to MB posters), I'm guessing theirs is a bit more informed.
July 8, 200719 yr OMG someone said something bad about the savior Olsen.....sure looks like an ace out there today.
July 8, 200719 yr As recently as...well, not too long ago...there was an opinion that Scotty O has the stuff to be one of the best LHP in baseball. And I, for one, dont see his attitude as a detriment. He has the same fire that Big Tex has, just not channeled as well quite yet. Kid is going to be a monster. The good, kick alot of opposing team ass, kind.

His attitude is not a detriment, he just doesn't have the stuff that a Beckett(not even close), or even Cole Hamels has. He is a two pitch pitcher right now who doesn't have good control of either pitch. He will never be a #2 or even #3 guy with out a change or pin point control.

So his in-game attitude/reation to adversity does not have a negative impact on his effectivness?

Why were his numbers so much better last year? Do you think he was more mature and had a better attitude last year?
July 8, 200719 yr He has an extremely good chance that he just has trouble consistently locating. If you mean change, that statement is an oxymoron. You can't have an extremely good pitch if you can't locate it at all. Olsen doesn't throw the change(which is not extraordinary right now, just average IMO) because he doesn't know where it is going to go. The potential is there, but it is hard to call a pitch good when you can't throw it for a strike unless you get lucky. This is why I wanted to send him down to the minors to work exclusively on the change.

Im not saying Girardi was a better manager than Fredi (well actually I am but that a can of worms that I don't want to get into). In terms of Olsen specifically, Girardi handled his immaturity better.

In terms of Olsen specifically, Girardi handled his immaturity better. See that's the point I am trying to make though. I don't care how mature or controlled he is, he won't be very good until he can locate his two pitches or throw a change. He put up about league average numbers last year and a lot of that IMO is because teams didn't have great scouting reports on him yet, while this year they realize he is just a two pitch pitcher so they are just sitting back waiting on a fastball and killing it. The reason for "sophomore slumps" isn't just a jinx, flukey thing, it is because of more detailed scouting reports and teams ready for average pitchers.
July 8, 200719 yr It's been reported in one place or another that Olsen has suffered from back tightness all season and if I remember even in spring training. I doubt it's scouting reports or any jinx, he's playing hurt.

If that is true, the blame needs to be placed on management and the trainers for letting a guy who has been struggling all year continue to go out there and not rehabbing him.
July 9, 200719 yr Fastball, slider, change correct? I havent got to watch Olsen for a while, I am kind of blanking on his complete repertoire.

Seeing what has happened to this entire staff is making me nervous about our trainers. Is Loria again being cheap and not hiring qualified people to look after his players ? Does he go that far to save a few bucks ? If I was a HS pitcher drafted by the Marlins I would seriously consider my options other than pro ball.

Call Loria cheap or whatever all you want, but this is a guy who knows valuable subjects. He is after all an art dealer. And if he is going to invest money into something, he's for sure going to have the best medical people around to protect is investment.

Its awfully suspicious, and if its dirty it usually has Lorias paw prints all over it. He is thoroughly detestable. Almost as bad as that little midget punk Delilah, he sends out to cover for him.

Why all the injuries? Well first of all with all this young pitching, and coming off seasons where they threw career highs in innings pitcher, this isnt uncommon. I mean the injuries with our hitters are mostly things that can't be prevented. A hamstring pull can happen to anyone no matter how stretched out they are. And if you truly believe Loria hired less than a great medical staff you are off your rocker. Hate all you want on Loria, and it appears you do, the man still wants to make money. And he can't make money if his talent is on the shelf. Gotta use your head, man.

The organization in general has been very "lucky" when it comes to injuries the last several years. 2007 has been the only season since I've followed the team that injuries have really hampered the team's record.
July 9, 200719 yr You are a horrible conspiracy theorist. Nothing you've made up so far has any ground what so ever. Because no franchise could have this much an 8-ball on them unless its been designed that way. Every time we think there is a glimmer of hope, it gets dashed. 3 owners and 2 firesales, with a 3rd one looming on the horizon in 2009.

He gets his money no matter who is playing for the team. If he ran all A-AA players out there he would still make a ton of money. And from what I have seen of him so far, he's capable of doing that.
