July 13, 200719 yr So there's only three times that I wear shoes (I use sandals everywhere else): -Going out to some fancy place, but not fancy enough to warrant dress shoes. -Playing Basketball at my gym -Running I've been using a 5 dollar POS pair of shoes from K-Mart years ago, and have been wanting to upgrade. I was originally planning on going to Orlando (closest store to me) and getting a pair of Starburys since they're cost efficient and nearly as good as $100+ basketball shoes. But I never got the free time to go down, and lately I haven't been playing that much basketball and instead have been doing a lot more outdoor running. Now in a perfect world I'd get both, but I'm a penny-pincher and only want one pair of shoes. Would it be more benneficial for more to get running shoes over Starburys? Is there a good pair of running shoes under 20 dollars? I don't want to spend over 20, but I don't know if there's a good running shoe brand like there is with the Starburys. I know bat-sh*t nothing about shoes, since like I said I basically never wear them. Thanks for any help
July 13, 200719 yr Depending on how seriously you run, I'd definitely recommend getting a pair of strictly running shoes. I'd recommend New Balance and if you have a store near you definitely go in. Best running shoes by far. The better quality of running show you own the more you can prevent injury and trauma and shock to your legs and body.
July 13, 200719 yr i have a couple pairs of New Balances very comfortable. I have one for running and another that i wear to work and to go out on errands. Really worth the money and u wont regret it. I agree with Fox.
July 13, 200719 yr Definitely have to agree with the other guys and say New Balance is the way to go. I like them because they are versatile. I wear them when I workout, go to a Fish game and basically anywhere that I'm not wearing sandals or dress shoes. My old ones lasted close to 4 years, so they'll last you a good while.
July 13, 200719 yr Plus, they are probably the last athletic shoe store on Earth that will properly size your foot not only in length but in width.
July 13, 200719 yr The Starbury's are exclusevely sold at Steve & Barry's in Orlando. Its in a small mall on International Drive called festival Bay next to Vans skate park. I have 2 pairs of Starbury shoes and they are really good. Have had him for a while and are perfect. For running shoes, I have some Nike's and I dont even feel my feet when Im wearing them. Starbury's are $15 bucks. You can also find other merchandise such as sweatpants, jerseys, shirts, and sweaters.
July 13, 200719 yr Author Plus, they are probably the last athletic shoe store on Earth that will properly size your foot not only in length but in width. That's good to hear, because I have "Fred Flintstone" feet - short and fat. Always had problems with shoes because of that, haha. Bunch of stores near me have New Balance according to their website, so I'll check it out this weekend. Thanks guys. :thumbup
July 13, 200719 yr I was running in basketball shoes for a while... and then I switched to Nike runnings shoes and wow what a difference it makes. New Balance are good ones too. I usually am also resistant to buying new shoes, but trust me, its worth it to have a nice pair of running shoes.
July 13, 200719 yr Yeah, I used to only wear cheap vans, my hiking shoes, or my dress shoes. All my exercise didn't need basketball or running shoes. I went the starbury's mentioned above because I only needed them for my new workout exercises and I love them for how cheap they come. But I guess if you're going into a serious running regiment take the advise given above.
July 13, 200719 yr Depends what you do more of, but basketball shoes prevent against ankle rolling pretty well, while running shoes are meant to be shock absorbers. You could probably get a decent pair of both for under $100 combined, and your knees and ankles will thank you for the special treatment.
July 13, 200719 yr best running shoes: ascics really good running shoes: brooks, adidas, nike this is what I run with. I have tons of problems with my ankles and it was all caused by a pair of old worn out nike's that I had. what a difference! :thumbup
July 13, 200719 yr Basically you are asking what kind of car you should get that will be good for racing and plowing your driveway. Basketball shoes and running shoes are from complete opposite ends of the spectrum. You could get some cross trainers that could do both - but would do either one very well. The idea behind basketball shoes [high tops] is that you need a tougher, heavier support system that will prevent ankle and foot injuries. The goal is to provide lateral [side to side] support so that when you try to pivot or stop and go, the sides don't blow out and your foot stays pretty much flat in the bed. The ankle support is obvious, so I won't even go there. The idea behind running shoes is that you need something super LIGHT that absorbs verticle [up and down] forces. A heavy shoe wears you out way too fast and makes your feet sweat like crazy. A super light mesh shoe with the best shock absorbers you can find is what you want for running in. It will save your feet, your shins, your knees, your back... If you run a mile or more 3 times a week, you need a running shoe. Period. You'll spend about 1000x as much on medical bills if you don't. If you have wide "Fred Flintstone" feet, New Balance is a very good company. They are typically cut slightly wider, but also allow you to order in extra wide sizes. Special orders are typically no more expensive, you just have to wait for them to come in. If you can get into a pair of Saucony Pro Grids, they will blow the NB's out of the water in terms of performance. Most models come with an "Arch Lock" technology that gives strong arch support while simultaniously keeping your foot centered in the bed. One other thing I would highly recommend is to go to a nice expensive store and get them to rate your walk. [you can always buy somewhere else!] Most people do not have a naturally neutral gait. By finding out where you need extra cushoning and support, you can avoid a ton of injuries. You may end up spending $20 or $30 on footbeds, but you can keep them through three or four pairs of shoes. But hey - that's just my $.02.
July 14, 200719 yr I have never heard of Starburys. Starbury's are Stephon Marbury's shoes and clothes line. Almost every single piece of merchandise is $15 and under but its only sold in Steve&Barry's which is in Orlando. Their shoes are really good and so is all their other merchandise. Also at Steve&Barry's, you can find College shirts, hats, jackets, anything college realtedfor $8 and under.

July 15, 200719 yr Since the Basketball season just ended you can get a lot of basketball shoes for real cheap. Running shoes you can always find for cheap. Why not just try and find 2 pairs for under a hundred. Check out Eastbay.com if you know your size because you can find cheap shoes that is where i always buy my shoes from unless I buy a new Pair of Airforce Ones or limited shoes. I've got my own shoe collection and it kills my wallet but I love it. I've been trying to get these new Reggie Bush cross trainers for months but they've been out of stock everywhere. I finally got yesterday Note to anyone who shops online always look for online coupon codes before you make a purchase I have probably saved $500 total on things that I have bought online.
July 15, 200719 yr Author Got them on sale too, only 40 dollars. Got back from running not-to-long ago, my knees and legs thank you
July 15, 200719 yr Good job, New Balances are just great. By far the best running shoe. I've got the MR873s for my trail running and the RC600s for my street running.
July 16, 200719 yr Good job, New Balances are just great. By far the best running shoe. I've got the MR873s for my trail running and the RC600s for my street running. I could not disagree more. As someone who personally runs in excess of 40+ miles a week and who's owned damn near every pair of serious running shoe out there, I can tell you that there is no best running shoe. The best running shoe is the one that fits your foot properly. I have a closet back home with dozens upon dozens of New Balance, Asics, Brooks, Nike, Adidas, and Reebok running shoes and you know what shoe I always turn to when I buy a new pair every month or when I have a PFT coming up? Mizuno Wave Rider 10's. They are the best shoe for me, no other shoe on the market fits my foot and gives me the necessary support that the Mizuno's do, but I would not recommend them to someone else because I don't know what foot type they have or what type of runner they are. I may not be a professional marathon runner, but physical fitness and long distance endurance running will pretty much make or break you in the Marine Corps and your legs and feet are literally your life. Do not go to Sports Authority or some other store like that, go to a specialized running store that sells a lot of the "offbeat" brands like Brooks, Mizuno, etc. as well as popular brands like New Balance and Nike. Then have someone at the store fit you into a shoe for your foot type. You may think some crazy New Balance running shoe that is $195 and advertises that it will do the running for you is by far the best shoe, but if your foot type isn't right for the shoe, then you might as well have some $5 piece of crap from K-Mart.
August 16, 200718 yr Great topic. Learned a lot about a subject I knew next to nothing about. Had been doing my running/jogging, whatever you want to call it in my old basketball shoes. Lately, just been a total pain in the ass as my feet, legs and everything else hurts like hell after a mile if that. Just bought me a pair of these bad boys: They feel great, tried on a few pairs of all the best running shoes, or at least the ones mentioned here and these feel the best of the ones I tried. Great topic and many thanks to those that gave advice.

That pretty much goes without saying for virtually anything. New Balances are known and tested to stand up more than any other shoe per Runner's World who has reviewed shoes for years. I respect that and my own experience from running track and cross country since middle school (and in to college) not only for school but with running clubs primarily with New Balance.
August 16, 200718 yr I run with the Nike Free 7.0. 10/2 Edition, also known as the Lance Armstrong edition
