July 26, 200719 yr ill get bashed for it, but willy mo pena is being sold now, especially with the sox signing of brady clark. theres probablly 10 teams that have better offers than us to put in for willy mo pena. but i wouldnt mind seening a righty/lefty platoon job of pena and hermida for the future. possibly moving hermida to center? who knows, just a thought, everyones got an opinion and i still think willy's got something to show.
July 26, 200719 yr No. Can't play CF and if we are going to platoon Hermida, Cody Ross is more than capable for that job.
July 26, 200719 yr Hermida can't play center and we'd have to give up too much to get Mo. I certainly wouldn't mind having him though.
July 26, 200719 yr I love wily mo probably just because of the name and power... but no i dont want to sit and watch him strike out in a marlins uni. pass.
July 26, 200719 yr I don't think moving Hermida to center at DS would help his defensive problems, nor like the idea of platooning him. Yet alone with Willy MO. An everyday CF'r please
July 26, 200719 yr Author yeah. didnt think this would work, but i wouldnt mind seeing him send some to the upper deck for us. oh well, torri hunter in the offseason!
July 26, 200719 yr Wily Mo needs consistent ABs at DH to be succesful (which I think he can be). You would not want him to play center or anywhere in the outfield, especially in DS.
July 26, 200719 yr he wouldnt help us much on defensively, which is what we could really use. i would pass on this.
July 26, 200719 yr excuse me while i go throw up at the idea of hermida playing center over amezaga, or pretty much anyone. it would be laughable if it didn't make me sick.
July 26, 200719 yr If Wily Mo could play center that'd be a whole lot more enticing, as he's got tons of power. He's going to hit 45 home runs if he ever gets 600 ABs...
July 27, 200719 yr well number one this is a stupid idea just because these threads with peoples brilliant thoughts need to stop.. but if you think about it, on the defensive side if he played right field he wouldn't really be a downgrade. and on the offensive side, he'd fit right in with all the k's.
July 28, 200719 yr I love Willy Mo so much, I'd kill to have him. He's played some center for the Red Sox, he's not great, but he can play it. I say go for it, if nothing else, for 2008 you could look at Willy Mo in left and Hammer at first.
July 28, 200719 yr By can meaning he can put on a glove and stand in the area, yes he can. I thought he'd develop more as a fielder but if anything he's regressed in his time here. Like I said, Wily Mo will put up big power numbers if he gets the consistent ABs, I don't think I'd want him in the field to get those though. He needs to be a DH.

I think just getting away from the Red Sox will do wonders for him. He'd be a push to be average as a fielder, but I don't think he's anywhere as bad as he's shown.
July 28, 200719 yr I actually feel bad for him in a way. His development has been so f***ed with for a variety of different reasons and a variety of different situations. We never handled him properly and he has floundered. I'd love to see him get to a place that will stick with him and play him everyday.
August 7, 200719 yr It would be real nice to stick this guy in CF for the rest of the season seeing as he cleared waivers today. Pena clears trade waivers By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff According to a major league source, Wily Mo Pena has cleared trade waivers, meaning any team is free to negotiate a deal with the Red Sox for the outfielder before the end of the month. The fact that he cleared trade waivers does not mean the Sox can option Pena to the minors. He is still out of options, and would have to clear the standard waiver wire to be eligible for demotion. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds...clears_tra.html
August 7, 200719 yr I strongly beleive if this guy can catch on with a team that is willing to give him a chance to play everyday he would put up great numbers.... hopefully the Marlins take a chance on him...

It seems so obvious doesn't it? 40+ HR potential here cheap. I'd be really pissed if we didn't look into this.

But with time Wily would improve anyway. Would love to give him a shot down here
August 7, 200719 yr I heard his best defensive position was cf. Wierd but I guess he gets a better read on the ball from cf and I remember him making some nice catches for the Reds in CF a few years ago when JR went down with an injury alot of K's but I'd love to have Willy Mo.
August 17, 200718 yr Word on the Boston Street is that Wily is either getting traded or DFA'd sometime on Friday to make room for Clay Buchholz. If he gets DFA'd, I don't imagine he gets around to us. He'd have to go through all of the AL teams (really doubtful he passes through places like MIN, OAK, KC...he's still arbitration eligible next year), SF (Who needs young OF help), PIT (yeah), CIN (I'd lol), HOU, and the Nats. So basically if he's DFA'd doubtful we'll get him. But his trade value has to be horribly low atm. But De Aza has also been nice, and the FO hearts him it seems. And really, with Pena only having one year of arbitration left, where he might make 2m+, it probably won't be a good fit anyway.
