UF Student Tasered During John Kerry Speech

Apparently on Good Morning America they said that a couple months ago he filmed himself holding up a 'Harry Dies' sign in Gainesville's busiest intersection just hours after the release of the last Harry Potter book.

Sounds like an attention starved kid, if you ask me.

He also had his rights violated by having his freedom of speech limited. There was no excuse for the cops to act the way they did just because he asked one too many questions. The kid wants to become a reporter. In my mind he did the right thing. Reports should not take sh*t from politicians and force them to answer the tough questions. Unfortunately, at UF that apparently results in being assaulted by officers.

They in no way violated his 'freedom of speech'. This was an event in a university with rules. Once the event organizers said to stop and he continued they had every right to escort him out. When he resisted leaving and cops were involved, especially with a Senator in the room the dude is going to get tasered, plain and simple. When cops say leave and you dont youre gonna get forced out.

Like BB said in a post before the kid is an attention whore Im glad he got a dose of reality yesterday. Maybe next time he wont be such a pompous, arrogant little sh*t head.

The kid was supposed to ask one question and he didn't. And apparently it was the student union organizers of the event that asked the police to escort him out, so the cops were just doing what they were asked to do. They were only going to take him out of the building, until that is, he decided that he wasn't going without a fight. I started to laugh my ass off when he started screaming "they're gonna kill me!" What an idiot.

I know legally they had every right to kick him out. Practically, they could have handled the situation much better. I also sense they "knew who he was" and treated him differently. They also attempted to stop him from even speaking, but Kerry let him speak. If the senator wanted him to talk, then let the kid talk. If he's not bothering or threatening Kerry then why mess with him. Just let him vent. The organizers were mad that he was talking in the first place and wanted him to stop talking before he ever opened his mouth. Let the loon vent and be done with it. Quite simple.

This is awesome. If I was still at UF and I was there Id have spoken up and beat him up. But those nerds didnt say anything. But then when he is getting tasered the camera shows a couple students standing and watching right next to the cops and some girl taking pictures. THATS AWESOME! This kid also sounds exactly like Dane Cook, so I hate him that much more. The kid got what he deserved and it made my day.

I actually think this is bulls***. Totally unecessary.

Further proves what an absolute inept group of people most campus police are. Most campus police to me seem like the most unhappy people on the face of the earth and it's not surprising to me when they get a little 'action' they royally f*** it up. How was he not able to be restrained by 4 or 5 campus police and then to have to use a taser? Ridiculous. All of those 'police' should be fired.

I don't get why he needed to be removed, his questions were almost over and it isn't like he was harming anyone. If there was going to be such a strict limit on what was going to be said, then why not have some pre-made questions or something.

That kid was SUPER annoying though.

and yeah, campus police will be unhappy. They have a horrible job and will never, ever, be anything better. Kinda like the cops that work the Dolphin Stadium parking lot during football season. These people, at best, are fishfan25.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - The video is being seen on several Web sites -- showing a University of Florida student being Tasered by campus police and then arrested as he questioned John Kerry at a campus forum last night.

And it turns out that it's not Andrew Meyer's first appearance on the Internet. He has a history of taping his own practical jokes, and several of those videos are featured on his own Web site.

In 1 of them, he stands in a street with a sign that says, "Harry Dies," after the release of the latest Harry Potter book.

In another, he acts like a drunk while trying to pick up a woman in a bar.

The site also has what is called a "disorganized diatribe" attributed to Meyer. It criticizes the Iraq war, and the news media for not covering the conflict enough. And he lashes out at the American public for paying too much attention to celebrity news.

Looks like this kid was finally taught a lesson.

Yeah, getting tasered because he does random sh*t in his free time is a good 'lesson'.

Actually those are off duty details. Meaning there doing that on the side to earn some extra money.

That probably was unnecessary use of force but if people would just listen to cops and comply he wouldnt have gotten tased. You dont mess with cops.

In fact that reminds me of work. I work for a retailer as loss prevention and we went out to make a stop and the guy tried to run from us and started resisting so we struggled with him until we got him under control to put cuffs on him. If dude would have come back in with us peacefully he would have been let off with a Notice to Appear in court instead of winding up in the County jail for resisting a merchant arrest. It pays to listen and comply.

Hey, for once we agree on something.

There was NO reason to pull a taser. In the video he was telling the officers, when he was clearly subdued on the floor, that he would get up and leave peacefully. At that point, they started to taser him.

He should sue them big time, particularly since there was plenty of video to back up his claim.

Aw, I should've gone. This guy got what's coming to him. He know he was supposed to stop, and refused to leave.

Stop what? Asking a question (which he had)?

He was doing more than asking a question. Its not like he was in the middle of asking a question that ran a bit long and BAM, TASERED! Granted, some of those nerds should have beaten him up loooong before he got tasered.

Um, he was absolutely finished when they decided to 'apprehend' him.

If it wasn't a free Q&A then they shouldn't have made it out to be one. Poorly moderated fro mthe get go and the lamest bit of 'police' work I've ever seen.

The kid puts his hands up repeatedly and then instead of letting him go, to subdue him, the portly cop is tugging at his hand. It's an absolute joke. The school, if that is who emplyed them, should absolutely let those two 'officers' go.

Well, 1) THE SCHOOL IS A JOKE!

President Machen sent out an email to the students today about the issue.

2) I dont know why I was numbering

.... The kid was just putting his arms in the air to make it more of a show. He put his arms up and kept squeeling and yelling and moving like a pig. I think he got exactly what he wanted, so we should all just be happy for him.

I thought I was having an actual serious (in the context of the board) discussion, but I guess not.

Anyways, I watched the video again (the YouTube one giving the best view IMO) and it's not even an issue of whether he should have been taking off the mic of whatever but the fact that 6 'police' could not put cuffs on that kid without tasering him. What a f***ing joke. The whole thing should have been avoided if one competent/non 300+ lbs. 'officer' was able to take him down in one move.

The University better hope to God it doesn't come out that he has some sort of ADHD or something like that. Which, just on the bits I've seen of this guy, would not surprise me.

I cant totally take this thread seriously, the kid that got tasered wasnt taking it seriously. He was making a scene for the cameras and got exactly what he wanted. I understand exactly what youre saying. The thing that also stuck out to me was that there was a large group of cops around the kid. Perhaps they wanted to calm him down so they didnt break his arm while applying cuffs. As far as the kid having ADHD or something, it seems as though EVERY college student now has a doctor prescribe some sort of special study medicine due to ADD or ADHD. He runs his own website and writes apparently, including one article about how dumb UF students are, so you would think he would know how to act in public and it is rather apparent that he did not want to follow simple directions.

Your views on him or his antics or whether or not he is a 'douchebag' has absolutely nothing to do with how the campus police dealt with the situation.

But if you want to do the whole, "LOLz wut a F@GG!!!1 I'm sOoOoOoO glad dat happened" I'm not gonna stop anyone.

he wasn't read his rights, therefore he is free to go

You don't have to be read your rights until you're being interrogated, and I thought I heard the cop telling them to him anyways.

Totally agreed with this and everything you've said in this post. The force was excessive, end.

In the eyes of the legal system, it's probably excessive force and some people might be losing their jobs.

Correct answer.
