The rain will probably stop in about 45 minutes.

And since it looks like it's going to be clear for the rest of the night after that.

I expect a restart around 11:20-11:30.

8 unearned. :lol

Many people would have you believe that defense is meaningless

I'm back. I plead guilty I bailed tonight. Enough with the f'ing rain.

What a #%^&@ embarrassment that was. I've never really been a Scott Olsen groupie but man I felt sorry for him tonight. They're still in a rain delay I see.

8 unearned. :lol

Putting the ball in play is meaningless too.

Nobody has ever said defense is meaningless.

They talk about like it's meaningless. And don't hesitate to call it over-rated...especially by the un-washed masses who don't "understand" sabremetric stats.

"Meaningless" may be too strong if we're parsing words but certainly there's been a belief system alive on this board among some, more this summer than I've ever seen before, that defense just isn't that important in today's brand of baseball. I certainly don't agree but it's there and I've taken my share of sh*t for not buying in.

Yup, Johnny2Times and the other statheads have made their presence felt on the board this year more than past years.

Well some have said that defense is overrated or that it's not that important.

I don't know what's the record for stolen bases allowed in a season is but I'm pretty sure Jason Kendall must pretty close to it but I guess that doesn't really matter because we have several posters calling for him to the catcher next season.

"Stat heads" would agree a team that is last in all the defensive numbers is counterproductive.

Don't put words in "our" mouths.

People only talk in extremes, there is no such thing as middle ground.

I think what MVP is alluding to is the willingness on the part of some to name-call and belittle anyone who doesn't get into lockstep with their "stats are the only thing that matters" mantra. More and more I find value in baseball stats but I refuse to discard, or allow someone brand as worthless, the knowledge base I have having attending over 2,500 MLB games and watched everyone from Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio and Bob Gibson to today's ballplayers.

Some things are just not quantifiable.
