A-Rod / Marlins Rumor Talk

Featured Replies

Yup, I guess I'm wrong:

A-Rod's huge numbers couldn't have come at a better time. Ten days after the World Series ends, A-Rod can opt out of the $252 million contract he signed with the Texas Rangers six years ago. He is scheduled to make $27 million in each of the next three seasons.

Yankees president Randy Levine also responded harshly to the magazine piece.

"It's a silly story, and we don't believe it," he told ESPN.com's Buster Olney on Sunday evening. "However, if it was true, it would be grounds to disqualify the applicant even before he went through the process, because it would demonstrate a disregard for major league rules and procedures, and we're confident the commissioner would feel the same way."

Levine later said he spoke to Bud Selig, and the commissioner agreed with Levine's interpretation of the story, and its possible implications. A player can neither have part ownership of a team nor negotiate for future ownership.

That's not exactly the same kind of authority as the text of the rules. He could just be saying that because it is convenient to him.

There may be another rule, but it's certainly not the one you quoted.

The version being referenced is a 1999 version. It is possible that some changes have been made to the rules since then.

ARod dumped the Yankees, not the other way around.

ARod is not bad for baseball in any way. It would be stupid for a team to pay him $25 million or $30 million but that's not his fault. If a team pays him that much it would be stupid and it would be bad for the team that pays it but that doesn't means ARod is bad for baseball. Stupid GMs are bad for baseball. Great players are good for baseball.

If you want to argue semantics, by Arod's decision to opt out of his existing contract, the Yankees made it official that they would not pursue. Which is a mutual break up. However, that doesn't change the fact that they dumped/shed/expunged/insert-word-of-choice-here all that money.

Okay, I might have been harsh by saying AROD is bad for baseball, but the point remains that an Arod contract IS bad for baseball. Read my later post which does a pretty good job of explaining the dollars and cents.

Giambi and Jeter made $23.4 million and $21.6 million this year, respctively. Are their contracts bad for baseball? As I said before it would be stupid to pay ARod $25 million a year but ARod at $25 million is a much better deal than Giambi at $23.4 million or Jeter at $21.6 million.

Could you imagine trying to negotiate something this complex with Boras? OMG! That said, he might also be the best person to be negotiating this kind of deal with, with the resources he has at his disposal.

The "fly in the ointment" might be that the Marlins have to pledge the franchise against their rent payments (financing repayment of the bonds that will be issued) and as such may be precluded from doing anyting that would be construed as being dilutive of that guarantee (like having a covenant in place that would allow ARod the right to a piece of the franchise at some later date).

***The reporting***Seems all too far-fetched to me and I must say I'm suspicious of this. The implication is this comes from Towers, which it's hard to believe he would make such comments to the press, on or off the record, or that anyone in a decision-making position would either.

the even more crazy part would mean Boras gets 10% of Arods contract normally does that mean he gets 10% of the part that arod gets of the fish?

Imagine him as part of the ownership

i think its more like 3%

and enough of these arod rumors. seriously, they are beyond stupid. two pages of posts should never be wasted on the rumor du jor coming from some random idiot with a computer. lets hold off on these topics until something actually happens... like some sort of communication between arod/boras and the marlins.

also, you have to be out of your mind if you think replacing cabs ($10 million after arbitration) with arod ($35 million a year probably) makes sense. yeah, cabs can get us prospects, but if we can afford arod (which we cant unless loria wins the lottery every week for the next two years) we can certainly afford an andruw jones or torii hunter and keep cabs instead of relying on unproven players and a moody arod.

I agree. And it doesn't explain how Selig, "aka league official," owned the Brewers for a substantial portion of his commisionership.

I stand by all the reasons before, even if against the rules technically, that if all the interested parties wanted it to happen, the greater good is for it to happen and they would find a way. ARod is so big he could save baseball in South Florida, which is just to huge of a moment for it to not happen if the parties can reach an agreement. I agree with 03, a shocking twist indeed!, that the only major obstacle would be precedent-setting for star players to get into ownership. But I really think this situation of saving a franchise in a huge media market is distinguishable to future claims of say Pujols wanting an ownership interest of an already established Cardinals team with a new stadium. That's not a good argument. The Marlins situation is absolutely bizarre and deserves special attention to make this work if that's what the parties want.

What's strange is, why the padres? Is David Samson consulting them on how to do PR ala Ichiro?

A-Rod coming here would make all my dreams come true:

A-Rod is teal...

Two monsters in the middle of our order...

And Alex Rodriguez having some say in our franchises direction.

Why should we hold off on this talk. If it annoys you then don't read the post. How often is it that the Marlins get any type of headlines from MLB sources besides mocking our low payroll and attendance. This makes interesting debates, isn't that the whole part of forums.

we arent getting any headlines. and yeah, the debates can be interesting at first, but not after 4 pages of mindless crap and people basically calling eachother idiots. and no, youre right, i dont want to read some of this garbage, but like any normal marlin fan i will read anything if it says "marlins" and "arod" in the same sentence. ill decide if its stupid after i read it.

id love to see him here as much as any marlin fan, dont get me wrong. but it isnt going to happen... unless we hear otherwise. lets move on and debate about real problems, like who is going to be our cf, catcher, our rotation, and the new stadium.

You make no sense. There are other topics to discuss those. It's not like this site can only carry one topic at a time. Again, if it irrates you DON'T READ IT. It so simple... Because you're sick of debating it doesn't make it wrong. Add your two cents to the debate or move on to something else.

I have no idea why you're talking about FA pitchers. IF YOU TRADE CABRERA YOU CAN TRADE HIM FOR PITCHERS. Example, I trade Cabrera to the Yankees and in return the Yankees trade Joba and Melky. That's a trade

Melky isn't a pitcher. And we need a lot more than Joba. :mischief

Kemp + Billingsley + Kershaw for Miggy + insert name here

Jeff Clement + Prospect for Dtrain

That gives the dodgers their huge bat, us our CF and 2 Elite pitchers for the future, after an arod signing as well we have a Stud lineup

SS Hanley Ramirez

RF Jeremy Hermida

3B A-Rod

LF Josh Willingham

CF Matt Kemp

C Jeff Clement

2B Dan Uggla

1B Mike Jacobs

SP Billingsley

SP Sanchez

SP Mitre

SP Kershaw

SP Vanhurk/Nolasco/Volstad/Johnson (when back)/ etc etc

Pretty sick if you ask me with 2 trades, assuming the dodgers would move those 2 arms and kemp

how does that not make any sense? obviously there are other posts. like i said, i dont really want to read it, but when i see arod and marlins im gonna read it because of the possibility that there can be something substantive there. everyone has added their two cents, including me, over and over again. there is nothing new being said. if you want to keep talking about nothing, fine, its a free country... im just pointing out how pointless it is unless something actually happens.

Kemp + Billingsley + Kershaw for Miggy + insert name here

Why wouldn't they sign ARod rather than trading for Miguel and this way they get to keep two beasts in Billingsley and Kemp that are making minimum wage for TWO more seasons?

it was a hypothetical situation merely stating it could be others.

But that would give them a 24 year old Superstar to market and lock up long term for much cheaper then a 33 year old Superstar.

Most likely the guy that could someday catch and Pass Arod after he breaks the homerun record.

That is something to be looked over what would be the implications of the homerun chase and all. Look at all of the media SF got for bonds over the years, ESPN pretty much lived to promote him and in turn Bonds. National games, media exposure, etc etc.
