Torre to manage Dodgers; Mattingly will be his bench coach

By PETER ABRAHAM

THE JOURNAL NEWS

The Los Angeles Dodgers have decided to fire manager Grady Little and replace him with former Yankees manager Joe Torre, The Journal News has learned.

Torre, 67, could be named manager as soon as tomorrow, according to two sources close to the situation. Don Mattingly is expected to accompany Torre to Los Angeles as his bench coach. Torre is also interested in hiring Kevin Long, his hitting coach with the Yankees.

The Dodgers were 82-80 this season under Little and were beset by clubhouse unrest. Owner Frank McCourt, a Boston native, decided Torre is best suited to quell that situation.

Torre turned down a one-year offer to remain as manager of the Yankees on Oct. 18. He had been with the Yankees 12 seasons, winning four World Series championships.

F-ing awesome.

I hope it's for a fraction of what New York offered him. Integrity can't be bought.

I find this amazing...the Yankees stint made people forget just how awful he is. Now this stint will make people realize what a fraud he is.

Don't you get it? It's not about actually managing. It's about sticking it to the Yankees. Within the first day of the Hot Stove, he's announced a deal. He turned them and their chintzy offer down, and it's f-ing great.

un real. this is amazing. i thought the 24 hours in 2003 were amazing when we dismantled the yankees! but look here, red sox world champs and the yankees are completely dismantled.

goodbye a-rod

and goodbye petite/rivera/clemens

if only l.a. needed a catcher(damit)

this little stint was 11 years

and he wasn't terrible in St Louis

not saying he's god's gift to managing but he ain't that bad either

The Yankees didn't want him and, more or less, let him go. How is this sticking it to the Yankees?

Mattingly, possibly, if they asked him to come back and coach. Torre, no. Torre was run out of town by an offer the Yankees knew he would turn down. The Yankees offered, he rejected, and they said "Ok, fine, thanks for the last 12 years!" rather than make a counter offer.

but the yankees sure do want rivera and petite back, but i think theyre going west now.

It's sticking it to the Yankees because they did offer him a contract. Maybe they intended to offend him with it and maybe they didn't. But the fact stand that he turned them down, not vice versa. And now has taken a job elsewhere.

I doubt it. Money talks.

However, if Pettitte or Rivera are either getting more than one or two year deal's respectively, they'll likely become an albatross. If the Yankees or Dodgers sign Rivera more than two years or Pettitte more than one, they're making a major tactical error.

Believe me, the Yankees didn't feel turned down. If they wanted Saint Joseph back it would've happened.

They didn't even make a counter offer. He was not in the Yankees plans. It's pretty well acknowledged and transparent at this point. Joe wanted to come back, he said so himself, he was run out of town by Tampa.

Good luck to Joe. He's a fantastic man. A below-average manager, but a fantastic, classy, extremely likable guy. The charity work he does is amazing. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a clue how to run a baseball team anymore. Luckily for the Dodgers, one of his main flaws (his over-loyalty to certain players) will not rear its ugly head for a while.

Somewhere Scott Proctor is crying.

Below .500 and finishing above 3rd only once in 6 seasons is kind of terrible.

In St. Louis, he was barely under .500 (.498, in fact, at 351-354). The 3 full seasons he was there (1991-1993), their record was 254-232 (84-78, 83-79, 87-75). I wouldn't call that terrible.

Good move by LA.

It will be interesting to see how he does outside of NY, but he should be fine with that team and their farm system (which is pretty loaded).
