Posted November 1, 200717 yr The pitching staff Mark Wiley worked with on the Marlins in 2005 bears little resemblance to the one he would inherit if he gets his old job back as the team's pitching coach. Josh Beckett and A.J. Burnett are gone, and Dontrelle Willis has been in steady decline since his 22-win season in '05, the year Wiley tutored him. But the vacant position might still be attractive to Wiley, who has spent the past two years scouting for the Colorado Rockies. On Thursday, the Rockies granted the Marlins permission to talk speak with Wiley, who keeps his home in Palm Beach County. Wiley, 49, relinquished the job after the 2005 season when Joe Girardi took over as manager and brought in Rick Kranitz to be his pitching coach. Kranitz left toward the end of this past season and has since been hired as pitching coach for the Baltimore Orioles. The Marlins also are considering in-house candidates, including minor-league coaches Reid Cornelius and Wayne Rosenthal, and bullpen coach Steve Foster. Wiley has a decided edge over the other candidates in terms of experience. He has served a total of 13 years as pitching coach of the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians, in addition to his one season with the Marlins
November 1, 200717 yr There's still a lot of young talent on the staff, maybe Wiley can work wonders. As for Mazzone he'll probably make more than Freddi whoever hires him
November 1, 200717 yr Do it. A proven commodity who knows the team and organization, and will probably return D-Train to proper form.
November 2, 200717 yr Wiley can probably get Willis back on track (no pun intended). We need somekind of change when it comes to pitching. Wiley can get the job done
November 2, 200717 yr I remember AJ used to call him "Coyote". Think Road Runner cartoons.............
