November 28, 200718 yr Robb Nen is eligible for the Hall this year. I know he probably won't get in, but if he were to get in, do you think it he would go in as a Marlin or a Giant?
November 28, 200718 yr Maybe Tim Raines would go in as a Marlin! Hey, if Dave Magadan got into the Hall of Fame would he go in as a Met or a Marlin?
November 28, 200718 yr Author He had a similar career to that of Bruce Sutter who just got in a couple years ago. I'd say with no clear-cut elite players eligible for the hall this year, theres at least a chance that Nen can get in, in my opinion

I'd say with no clear-cut elite players eligible for the hall this year, theres at least a chance that Nen can get in, in my opinion well, it took Sutter like 12 or 13 tries to get in, and he is credited with being the first pitcher to dominate with the split fingered fastball and he was one of the first and best of the modern closers as well... I loved Robbie but don't see him having a prayer. It'd be a miracle if he stayed on the ballot for next year.
November 28, 200718 yr Robb Nen is eligible for the Hall this year. I know he probably won't get in, but if he were to get in, do you think it he would go in as a Marlin or a Giant? Giant without a doubt. He spent much more time there.
November 28, 200718 yr While we're at it I'd like to wish Nen a Happy Birthday today! Its weird I have a desk calender with athletes birthdays everyday and today is along with Nen's, Walt Weiss and John Burkett's too  Those names bring back the memories. If one was Giant fan you got Nen, Burkett and Matt Williams today.
November 28, 200718 yr His tenure with the Marlins was essentially the same length it was with the Giants. Maybe a tad shorter in Florida but pretty negligible. I'd say a Giant because all three of his All Star Game appearances were with them. He got the ring in Florida but I imagine that would be overlooked. Great point, the 1997 team will forever carry the stigma of the firesale around with them. Time has not been friendly to the 97 Marlins.
November 28, 200718 yr Sheff has to go as marlin, especially after what he said about Torre I don't think going in as a Yankee is even an option

I loved Robbie but don't see him having a prayer. It'd be a miracle if he stayed on the ballot for next year. I don't think he gets in on his first time. But I think he only needs like 5% of the votes to remain on the ballot. That shouldn't be a problem.
November 28, 200718 yr I think the best chance we'll have for a while will be Sheffield I hope not. I would hope Sheff's attitude and bigotry will keep him out of there unless he buys a ticket like the rest of us. He had some good numbers, but an elite player? I'm really pulling for Hawk this year. We will make the trip for that ceremony.

He deserves it in my opinion but half the voters haven't seen a live baseball game in the last 10years

November 28, 200718 yr Sheff has to go as marlin, especially after what he said about Torre I remember hearing him on a radio interview a few months back and he said if he got in, he would go in as a Marlin, no doubt about it... Don't have the exact quote and can't remember who interviewed him, but I know I heard him say he'd definitely go in as a Marlin...
November 28, 200718 yr I thought the only Marlin candidate for the Hall in the next decade would have been Sheff. We've had that convo here plenty, and his Detroit tenure has pretty much solidified us as his HOF team. As for Nen, I don't think anyone really saw his nomination coming. He'll never get in, but I'm just glad he's getting some deserved recognition for his career. Granted, Chuck Knoblach (sp?) is on the ballot too... Doesn't say much.

You do understand the only qualification for a player to be named on the ballot is service time, right?

Let's just go ahead and name Mike Mordecai next year.

Good job keeping a heads up. :thumbup

Great point, the 1997 team will forever carry the stigma of the firesale around with them. Time has not been friendly to the 97 Marlins. Robb still had a couple great seasons including one great season with the Marlins. He helped secure the 97 win and that itself holds more than a couple AS appearances. If he goes in (which will be almost impossible), it will be with the Fish. It would be interesting where Robb stands in career saves compared to other great closers, (since the closer position is something relatively new). Closers usually have short careers it seems, so depending where he stands on the career saves list, he might have a better chance than we think. *edit* 1. Trevor Hoffman (39) 524 R 2. Robb Nen 314 Robb stands 15 all time, with the closest HOF'er in Rollie Fingers at #9. Rollie had a career ERA of 2.90 and Robb 2.98 John Wettleland is the only other respectable closer past #9 (Randy Myers has a high ERA) to have a good ERA (2.93) and be on the top 15. If he makes it, then Robb should. Robb also has 2 WS appearances and 11 post season saves. After looking all this up, I believe he makes it eventually
November 29, 200718 yr After looking all this up, I believe he makes it eventually Are you crazy? The Hall of Fame voters have proved that they don't treat closers too kindly (I agree). On top of that, Nen really wasn't an elite closer and had a short career. What's going to happen next? Jose Mesa in the Hall of Fame? This is all pure homerism.
