February 21, 200818 yr I'm going with Castillo for defensive purposes. The last thing this team needs is someone who cant catch playing 3B.
February 21, 200818 yr I figure they'll start Castillo, and maybe platoon with Dallas if he's healthy. Although if McPherson is hitting, the job should probably be his.
February 21, 200818 yr Castillo sucks. I really hope it isn't him. At least Dallas might not suck. We know Castillo does.
February 21, 200818 yr McPherson if he is healthy, Cantu if he's not, because Castillo is total ass. What he said.
February 21, 200818 yr McPherson if he is healthy, Cantu if he's not, because Castillo is total ass. What he said. x3
February 21, 200818 yr McPherson will be given every opportunity to start at worse he would platoon with Castillo
February 21, 200818 yr With Castillo and McPherson being the most likely to win the job, what happens to Cantu? Can we get anything for him or does he have to sit it out in the minors? He would really have to impress and return to his 05 form to even be considered for the job. He comes in as the underdog to win it, but the added competition doesn't hurt I suppose.
February 21, 200818 yr I think it's Castillo's job to lose, and McPherson goes to AAA where he plays everyday to see if he can get back to being capable of MLB play after almost eighteen months off. He didn't just miss all of 2007, he missed a big chunk of 2006 as well and by his own admission he's rusty. The two questions are can he sustain an everyday schedule in the field and when his hitting eye comes back. His hitting wasn't without warts before he was hurt so not only does he have get back to where he was he has to become more selective than he's ever been as well. If he does well he conceivably is the starting 3Bman by the ASB.
February 21, 200818 yr Jorge Cantu is the most established hitter of this bunch. I think he will win the job outright in Spring Training because of his bat. McPherson is unproven and Castillo doesn't have the bat to succeed at 3B in the majors.
February 21, 200818 yr Author I think you guys might be underestimating defense. We desperately need to improve from last year in that department. Does anybody have a good idea about the defensive ability of Mcpherson or Cantu? I've heard neither is to good overthere. Those who watched Miguelito(RIP) suck it up there last year knows how important D at third is. Obviously if Dallas or Jorge can hit the cover off the ball this wont be an issue, but I have a feeling that wont happen and therefore you have to go with D.
February 21, 200818 yr Its hard to believe that Castillo was a higher prospect at one point then McPherson ever was. in a perfect world McPherson>Cantu>Castillo But its probably at this point Castillo>McPherrson>Cantu
February 21, 200818 yr This reminds me of something I've been meaning to make note of: I'm an anglo and so El Nuevo Herald and the spanish language edition of the Sun-Sentinel are not part of my daily reading but I have noticed there's a lot of marlins coverage that never makes it into the english language editions. I say this because somehow (I think I was using the search function at one of the sites) I found this article last week interviewing Jose Castillo, and there have been others in the past, which I cut and pasted into freetranslation.com (where Cabrera becomes "goat herder" so you know the translation is really "iffy") and trying to get the gist of it he knew what this year meant to his career, that his winter league play only made him more prepared for the challenge, etc. I don't remember a lot of it but it stuck in my head to ask anyone here who has the urge, if there's stuff like this that's not in the english language editions they come across, it would be really great if possible to at least post a synopsis of what's being said.
