Retro_Marlins25
Recently, on the radio, team president David Samson would not commit to the Marlins signing Hanley Ramirez to a contract. Will they sign Hanley or let him go like so many other great players who were once here? -- Andrew B., Homestead, Fla. In fairness, do you really expect a team president to publicly negotiate or tip his hand on a talk radio show? From what I've gathered, and I feel confident writing this based on inside knowledge I've gathered, the Marlins have identified some players to lock up through their arbitration years after the season. I fully suspect Ramirez will sign a multiyear contract after this year. Just because this isn't being broadcasted to a talk radio host doesn't mean that these discussions aren't going on internally. Getting this stadium deal done was a crucial step to the Marlins' rethinking of signing players through their arbitration years. Without the new building, then yes, chances would be slim that the team would be in position to make a commitment to any player long term. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/articl...sp&c_id=fla

MarlinsLou
Hanley and Hermida. No one else arbitration eligible matters for buyout purposes.

Trey05Marlins
I think Hanley is the only player eligble for arbitration that we should lock up long term right now. My philosophy is that once is an accident, twice is a trend, and three times is when it becomes established fact. Hanley won rookie of the year, followed it up with an MVP-like year, and looks to be on the same pace this year. Therefore he DEFINITELY falls into the category. Hermida may move into that category for me depending on how he does this year. Health is the number one concern for him.

But I myself wouldn't mind trading Uggla. I fully suspect us to be dealing Uggla when the organization feels Coughlan is ready for the show. His trade value is probably a lot higher than some here believe. I would have to think if Jacobs produces this season, we're going to take a long hard look at keeping him in the long-term picture. Willingham is a guy I really like, and he is just a great professional hitter. Reminds me a lot of Conine, both on the field and in the clubhouse. He's as solid and consistent in production as they come, and with his approach I don't see him declining anytime soon. And he's definitely a silent, professional, lead-by-example type of guy you love to have around.

Seems like a guy that could very possibly produce around .290/15/80 one day. I'll take that at second base all day. Obviously the jury is still out on Andino. I don't think Uggla is gone after this season, but if he does go, the return in that trade will be huge.

305_FishFanatic
They should definitely lock up a few key players. I like our core of young studs, knowing that they all have bright futures ahead of them and can just get better. Im happy with Jacobs, Uggla, Hanley, Hermida, and Hammer all recieving long term contracts.
jerus9703
Lets sign Hanley and Hammer :notworthy :notworthy I love Uggla and bashing him is idiotic but if we can get good value for him do it (assuming Coghlan continues his development) Trade Hermida, he sucks (hopefully he proves me wrong but he wont b/c hes a loser) :cool :cool

I like our core of young studs, knowing that they all have bright futures ahead of them and can just get better. Im happy with Jacobs, Uggla, Hanley, Hermida, and Hammer all recieving long term contracts. G. Sanchez and L. Morrison are the future at 1B. Coghlan and Andino are the future at 2B. Carroll, J. Miller, Cousins, and Raynor are the future in LF. Plus, L. Gonzalez veterans are easy to find for 1B and LF every year making the transition smooth. I have the utmost confidence in Andino and Coghlan to hold the position down for years. The Marlins have absolutely no need to retain their complimentary players longterm. Uggla, Jacobs, and Willingham are solid starters, nothing more. They are older so there isn't much room for growth. None can play defense. Uggla and Jacobs are all or nothing hitters. Hammer is a bit better, but still not premier, and especially not for his position. Hanley and Hermida have star potential. They are the only ones that need to be locked up. As for pitching, which you didn't mention but feel compelled, we don't need to lock up anybody because of the plethora of arms coming in. Until someone throws 2-3 solid seasons and becomes a rotation fixture, we don't have to think about it. It's literally, Hanley and Hermida. Then in 2 years think about Maybin, Coghlan, and whatever SP start emerging as the best ones.
pierremvp1
I'd like to keep all five, but if it came down to just two of them, I'd go with Hanley(obviously), and Willingham. I see him projecting out just like Conine. Solid but not spectacular offensively. Solid defense, which is a great turn-a-round. Seems to a good clubhouse guy. We have to save some money for signing some pitchers as well. We have a couple of years to determine who's worthy there. I'd hate to see Uggla go, but if it is a money thing, I see a player like him getting 6-8M/yr. in a long term deal. That's a luxury we may not be able to afford. If we could sign Jacobs for 3-5M/yr. I'd go for that, but he'd probably command more as well. I'd like to see Hermida have a full solid season. Then we could trade him while he has some trade value for more young pitching. IMO, his potential future injuries and/or potential defensive miscues outweigh his potential future offensive pluses down the road. I see the team evolving back to the defense/pitching ways over the HR team we are now.
The_Godfather
G. Sanchez and L. Morrison are the future at 1B. Coghlan and Andino are the future at 2B. Carroll, J. Miller, Cousins, and Raynor are the future in LF. IMO Coghlan is the future at 2B, I love him. He will translate to the bigs and put up above league average numbers at 2nd, while always being a tough AB. Andino's future is super utility. Not sold on him being the starter on a good team. Don't think either Gaby or Morrison are the future at first base, and I'm not really concerned that we don't have that guy yet. I am hoping the future is Justin Smoak, but if we not I have no doubt we can find an .850 OPS guy to man first. Not sold on Gaby being an everyday MLB player, and who knows with Morrison yet. Could be. IMO it is between Cousins and Raynor for LF. One of them will step up to be the guy, and again...if not we will be fine because that is another position like 1B that isn't hard to field. We have the 3 core guys in Hermida, Hanley and Maybin (2 of the 3 being hard positions to find) to build around, now we just need to find the catcher of the future. Hopefully we are on the phone 24/7 with the Rangers. 5 guys will step up out the dozen or so SP prospects we have right now to be good enough too. Bullpen looks solid for years to come also. It's just organizationally speaking. You don't keep Jacobs around at $5-6 million (or more) his 2nd year in arbitration, when we have a limited budget until the stadium, versus guys who have the same overall upside and similar success in the minors. I won't be shocked if all those 1B/LF types don't pan out, but we're still going to give them a chance until that stadium is built, to see if we can add to the core you speak of. That's all I meant by future, just guys we will play and not necessarily locking down the position long term. My bad for not clarifying. If no one pans out, we have plenty of stuff to deal. And yes, non stop with Texas for either catcher, although I am a bit worried they will move Salty to 1B meaning they won't have excess with Teagarden. Pray Seattle hangs with the Angels too. I like Anderson in the Cards system as well.
Admin
I don't really see anything that Andino has done in his major or minor league career that warrants any consideration as a future starting second baseman.

Ok, so if you mean it as in, Willingham, Jacobs, Uggla, Cantu have no future with the Marlins, then yea...I agree. We will find cheaper options who can do the same things somehow. The two bolded statements make me wonder then why you are so adamant about getting rid of uggla who, in the two years playing for us, batting in the 2 hole has put up 27/31 HRs and 90/88 RBIs; which are good numbers for a 5 hole, 4 hole, or any-hole hitter. Is it really Coghlan's BB/K ratio thats gonna help us that much more than uggla? Would Coghlan be better defensively? I read that scouting report that breaks down Coghlans swing and how it has changed from college, and it mentioned that he isn't even that solid defensively. Which also doesn't make me hope and pray that they get rid of uggla so Coghlan can come in. Also, Leyland's quote in your profile is priceless.
