The Official 2008 Florida Panthers offseason thread

Featured Replies

The Panthers have began the offseason on a good note by re-signing prospect Michael Frolik.

What will this team do in a playoffs or bust type season, where the best of Panther fans are beginning to get restless?

Will Jokinen be traded?

Will Bouwmeester get a big contract?

Also...reports are that the Panthers' main interest is a puck-moving defenseman...Ottawa Senators D Wade Redden has expressed interest in playing for the Panthers (b/c Martin is here), and it seems like the Panthers have expressed interest in him.

Should be a fun offseason... :D

Kamil Kreps signed, Wade Belak signed, Michael Caruso* signed, Luke Beaverson* signed.

*Minor-League contracts.

Jay Bouwmeester will likely get 5 mil per season for 4-6 years, looking at 20-30 million dollars.

Rostislav Olesz is looking at a contract long term, looking around 4 years, 9 million dollars.

Jokinen, from this point, will only be traded if the right deal comes along, which means he is 100% chance of being traded. Likely we will find that deal.

General Manager Jacques Martin has expressed interest in Wade Redden, and many rumors from credible sources say that he is far ahead in the bid for Redden than other teams of interest, looking at 5 million per season, unrevealed the length of contract, Redden was an allstar in 2002 and 2004, +/- award winner in 2006, and puts up consistent numbers. One problem with Redden is that there are small rumors, unsure of the credibility, that Redden has abused the performance enhancers, though people are unsure of this. He is an assistant captain, and a good leader.

In the search for the head coach, leading candidates by Jacques Martin are: Paul Martin(former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach) Perry Pearn(New York Rangers assistant coach) and Andre Savard (Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach, most likely taking an office job)

Thats your update, from me.

What's up Erik? Its JMIMI. I wonder who the new coach is gonna be

Paul Maurice seems to be the hot rumor now.

When the hell are they going to hire a new coach??

I dont see the rush, considering JM "technically" still is the coach until his contract expires... its not like they are in training camp yet or anything... the season just ended... though the new coach will be on his way soon.

not good news on the bouwmeester front:

Looming restricted free agent Jay Bouwmeester is noncommittal about whether he wants to play here long-term, and Panthers general manager Jacques Martin said there's ''no progress'' in contract talks. ''He wants to win,'' Martin said. ``That's the issue. He wants to be in the playoffs. We all do.''

No Bouwmeester = complete offseason failure, imo.

We can't just let him go, like that.

He's 23 years old, and is already among the top 5-10 as far as D men in the NHL, I'd say.

i pretty much agree. but he's putting us (martin) in a tough spot. if he doesn't re-sign, he has to be traded. theres no way we can go into this season with the possibility of him walking for nothing. and if we're contending (which im guessing we plan to do...) we're not gonna deal him mid-season because the only deals available then are for prospects/picks.

the only possible trade scenario that I see as an "even trade" would be trading Bouwmeester to Ottawa for Spezza. Ottawa wants to make changes, and Spezza is a playmaker.

Unfortunately, he (Spezza) and Martin never communicated well, apparently, in Ottawa. They never had the greatest of relationships.

Is it just me or does Martin have a bad relationship with everyone?

that has to do with his "defensive, passive style" that some players can't get accustomed to...that's why some players underachieve with him. Spezza did it, and Jokinen is doing it as well, here. Last year, 71 points for Jokinen...not as many as Jokinen would like, I'm sure. I feel Horton's the same way.

Defense is good...but sometimes you have to let your players just play the game.

Our players never really bought into Martin's system, imo. Martin's not the greatest motivator, with his consistent, arms crossed, plain looking face on the bench.

I agree as a coach Martin really had set the organization behind but he does have a good eye for talent. We need a new Coach ASAP. I know he was waiting til thepost-season was over but what is he waiting for now?

if bouwmeester forces our hand, ottawa is probably one of the best trading partners for us. spezza is unlikely, but heatley could be possible..

they could also put together a pretty tempting package. meszaros or volchenkov, vermette and a first? i'd hate to lose jay-bo but that's tempting.

he's stubborn, set in his own ways so anyone that doesnt comply to them he gives the cold shoulder to. he's a great X's and O's coach but he doesn't have the versatile personality needed to be an elite coach.

I came up with this today...

3 team trade... :mischief

To FLA: Brent Burns (from MIN) + Jason Spezza (from OTT)

To MIN: Olli Jokinen (from FLA) + Andrej Meszaros (from OTT)

To OTT: Jay Bouwmeester (from FLA) + Mikko Koivu (from MIN)

i doubt minnesota would go for it...they add too much salary and dont really improve all that much, while getting older.

why not just deal with ottawa if you're up for that drastic of a change? olli/jay-bo for one of heatley/spezza, one of volchenkov/meszaros, vermetter and a pick?

I actually would love to keep Bouwmeester. I just don't like what I'm hearing.

...and I like Burns. :p

I think Olli is as good as gone to be honest.

don't know much about the guy aside from him being ridiculously successful in juniors. hopefully his success can carry over to the next level!

from the sources I've read, he's the complete opposite of Jacques Martin...he actually yells at players/referees, etc.

He's also had great success in the OHL...which is good b/c that means his strength should be developing players. The Panthers are still a young team.

NHL Draft (1st Round) starts tonight at 7 PM. Steve Stamkos will be the 1st pick (TB Lightning).

The Panthers don't have a 1st Round Pick, but rumors are Olli Jokinen will not be a Panther, at the end of the day. One of the pieces Jacques Martin wants back in a trade is a 1st Round Pick, in tonight's draft. He would also want 2 NHL ready players, in return.

Should be interesting... :thumbup

It appears that there is some kind of deal in place it is just a matter of how much the Panthers are getting back It would entail a low 1st rounder and maybe 2 players
