Marlins Target David Ross, Anibal Pitches

TEAM TARGETS REDS CATCHER DAVID ROSS

Although the catching market is thin, the Marlins are looking at Cincinnati Reds catcher David Ross as a trade possibility.

Ross, who primarily has been a backup for most of his seven major-league seasons, is hitting .247 with one home run in 89 at-bats this season.

But Ross, 31, a former University of Florida player, is serviceable and relatively inexpensive ($2.52 million this season with a club option in 2009 for $3.5 million).

He is a career .224 hitter, but hit 21 home runs in 2006 and 17 last year in the cozy confines of Great American Ball Park. Over his career, Ross has a 38 percent rate throwing out runners trying to steal.

The Marlins are less interested in Colorado's Yorvit Torrealba, Washington's Paul Lo Duca and Kansas City's Miguel Olivo.

SANCHEZ DEBUTS; TANKERSLEY RECALLED

Right-hander Anibal Sanchez pitched Thursday for the first time this season. Sanchez, who is coming off shoulder surgery, threw five innings, allowed four hits and two runs in a Gulf Coast League game. The Marlins will announce Friday where Sanchez's next start will be. . . . Reliever Taylor Tankersley was called up from Triple A Albuquerque (N.M.) to take Eulogio De La Cruz's roster spot.

That would be a pointless trade. Meh. Meh. Meh.

I'm blah about the David Ross proposal. It is good news though that Anibal is pitching again. Hopefully he can come back and help out in August.

Good news on Anibal, but we need an OFFENSIVE upgrade at Catcher.

Ross would be an OFFENSIVE upgrade.

He certainly has more power than our 3 catchers combined.

Eh, Ross is a Mendoza liner. He does manage to get on base quite a bit, but I don't know if I want a guy who has a career year when he hits over .240.

Oh well certainley better than matt treanor.

Barely. Not worth the loss of whatever it would take to get him.

We already have enough pop in the lineup. Now we need people who make contact and hit for average and with RISP. I'm not really down on Treanor. If our pitchers pitched better nobody would complain about our catching woes. Granted Rabelo was lame and Hoover is mediocre but Treanor is decent in a platoon or as a backup. We just need a second catcher to compliment him. There are no stars out there for the taking. I'm underwhelmed by David Ross.

As for Anibal that's great news. I am very skeptical of his return from labrum surgery but this sounds promising.

What is the deal with John Baker? He's hitting well in Albuquerque. I know he's not on the 40-man roster but hell he's got to be better than Hoover and just as cheap. There must be some dead weight pitchers on th 40-man that they could move.

not many power hitting or offensive catchers in the league. I think stay with what you have and just continue to upgrade the pitching. Maybe give some other guys more playing time like a McPhereson.

Also, wasn't Anibal due back right after the all-star break?

Can Willingham Catch again, or Jake and move mcphearson int LF, or 1b?

Chris

Hammer's bad back doesn't let him catch, and Jake was moved from back there because he sucked.
