Baker typifies a Beinfest/Marlins player. Older, mature, understanding THIS shot is HIS shot, an overachiever with something to prove and nothing to lose. I am thrilled he's started off the way he has and we ride this pony as far as it will take us.

He's not old, he's only 27. Same age as Uggla when he was a rookie. Hell, if you look at his minor league numbers, they are very similar to Uggla's.

 

I'm not saying he is going to put up Uggla like numbers, but I am just saying not to write him off as a "Beinfest player" (God, I hate that phrase.)

I actually thought Rabelo belonged in AAA all along. Jason Baker has had better minor league numbers than Rabelo ever did. The only thing he had over Baker is experience, which way too often is a deciding factor for playing time. Just because a guy is experienced being mediocre doesn't mean he should be given a job. It just means that he has proven he is mediocre.

I do like what I see (Have only seen one of his games). His command of the game behind the plate, the way he handles the pitchers that came in from the pen, and the fact that he seems to have a cannon of an arm and has patient at bats are all pluses....

 

Maybe we should wait until he actually throws out a base stealer before we say things like this.

I don't feel the same about Baker you can tell how each bat, so far Baker as shown long at-bats and tough battles.

Rabelo didn't show any of that.

 

Not to mention Baker did a pretty good job handling Josh Johnson after his injury.

OK give Hoover some credit, he called a good game catching Volstad. But it still wasn't a complete game or a shut out. Not good enough. And not good enough seems to be the story of every catcher the Marlins have used since Paul Lo Duca.

BTW Rabb, I was being a little tongue in cheek using the phrase Beinfest player and referring to him as older...At my age I think of him as a kid ... although I do think the FO does look to exploit players in that age group to the benefit of the team. Personally I'm rooting for a 31 year old nobody pitcher at AA so believe me age is not an issue here. At least as far as Beinfest ( a name that I think has really come to mean his whole team - Hill, Fleming, etc. - is concerned I see it as the lack of money has made them more acutely aware of "talent first" and age second as they evaluate players.

 

And I remember the "let's not sign up Dan Uggla 'cause he's too old" threads too just a couple of months ago (because :brigginbounce we have to make room for Chris Coghlan).

Coghlan will probably commit 30 errors this season at AA and I think if Uggla has anything like the first half in the second half and the Marlins dump him you will see a fan revolt beyond anything we've seen here before over one player, and that includes Miguel Cabrera. I can see them simply going to arbitration with him, but jettisoning him, especially to get younger, not a chance. Not with a stadium worth of corporate season ticketholders to sell to for 2011. Next year begins the big corporate season ticket push. Up until now the Marlins have not been able to sell them because the stadium owns the rights to market to them. There couldn't be a more wrong message to send going into next season financially. You or anyone else may not like ownership and I'm not saying you do or don't, but they aren't stupid and haven't come this far in their dreams of a new stadium to go down that slippery path. It would be worse than 1998, worse than 2006. And yeah, I can be accused of being prone to hyperbole, but I don't think so in this case.

 

I will say this for Coghlan though, he makes one fine piece of trade bait. (just pulling your leg)

My bad, I knew that, but I have a friend named Jason Baker so I got mixed up. I didn't reference any of Baker's lack of major league experience though.

Maybe Baker is the catcher the Marlins are looking for. The fact that he bats lefty could be an asset to the team. Also, his presence and demeanor seem to be more convincing than Treanor, Hoover or Rabelo. Hopefully he will get a lot of playing time.

The problem with Treanor is that he is not starting material. He is probably no better or any worse than Mike Redmond. If the bat can not compare with Uggla, Ramirez, or even Jacobs, why start Treanor?

Catchers have historically been picked for their defense not necessarily their offense. With that said, Treanor has done a really good at the plate and played very good defense to the point where this team should not consider catching as a weakness and focus instead on securing relief pitching.
