July 11, 200817 yr Maybe Baker is the catcher the Marlins are looking for. The fact that he bats lefty could be an asset to the team. Also, his presence and demeanor seem to be more convincing than Treanor, Hoover or Rabelo. Hopefully he will get a lot of playing time.
July 11, 200817 yr He's been the friggin answer at catcher, but for some reason they took forever to call him up.
July 11, 200817 yr yea they really waited too long to bring him up but who knows....so far he has called two great games and i really like his bat...hes got pop too...he has a lot of potential to be a good all around catcher.
July 11, 200817 yr Baker is for real! Did you see how well he worked the count's last night? both for Josh Johnson and when he was batting, amazing! This guy is a keeper!
July 11, 200817 yr I remember when Rabelo played his first game, he hits a HR, and everybody was like "oh my God he's our catching answer!" Lets wait before passing judgement
July 11, 200817 yr I remember when Rabelo played his first game, he hits a HR, and everybody was like "oh my God he's our catching answer!" Lets wait before passing judgement I'll second that... lets wait a least a couple of weeks before we crown him king catcher... I do like what I see (Have only seen one of his games). His command of the game behind the plate, the way he handles the pitchers that came in from the pen, and the fact that he seems to have a cannon of an arm and has patient at bats are all pluses....
July 11, 200817 yr Its disapointing that he is going to have to split time with Hoover, who is no better than Rabelo.

I still see Treanor as the starter when he comes back. He's been solid all year.

I still see Treanor as the starter when he comes back. He's been solid all year. The problem with Treanor is that he is not starting material. He is probably no better or any worse than Mike Redmond. If the bat can not compare with Uggla, Ramirez, or even Jacobs, why start Treanor? The news paper mentioned the possibility of getting Olivo back. Please NO.
July 11, 200817 yr As soon as he have a bad game, am i going to see threads about send him down, he no good, remember not to long ago, pitcher name Tucker, first game, "he should be in the rotation long ago" next start, we should move him to the bullpen, he is not ready yet, remember the old saying, Take time is not lazyness.
July 11, 200817 yr He's looked good so far but I'll wait a few weeks before I call or consider him the answer at catcher.
July 11, 200817 yr Baker typifies a Beinfest/Marlins player. Older, mature, understanding THIS shot is HIS shot, an overachiever with something to prove and nothing to lose. I am thrilled he's started off the way he has and we ride this pony as far as it will take us. In some sense Treanor, Rabelo, Baker, Hoover they are all cut of the same cloth (and please spare me the ___________ stinks, etc. comments - think big picture and not their individual differences- they have more in common than not). I'd still like to see someone back there with with more seasoned National League experience but for a while a least we can work with what we have to get as much as we can from the position. There's roughly three weeks to the trading deadline, we'll see where we are then.
July 11, 200817 yr Yeah, I think we should all reserve judgement on this guy. Sample size is too small to tell how good he will be here. I agree that he does have more of a catcher demeanor (whatever that is), but I really could care less. Look at Vlad Guerrero; on the topic of demeanor, the guy looks like a mess at the plate, yet you can't argue with his numbers. had Rabelo continued to produce nicely, we would never have noticed his demeanor. Bottom line, I like many liked what I saw, but let's be patient. All we know is that Baker played an important part in yesterday's win.
July 11, 200817 yr Every single one of the catchers on the Marlins 40 would make great reserve catchers for just about any team in the bigs, but none of them are your front of the line offense/defense productive everday starters. That said I like the Baker/Hoover platoon idea and think it will work out fairly well.

Demeanor: what I am trying to refer to is the presence that Pudge used to have for the Marlins. Obviously two leagues apart, however, Baker could instill fear to the opposition in time. Yes, it will take time for him to develop and gain respect at the MLB level, but hopefully not.
July 11, 200817 yr I'm not ready to call him our answer to our catching problems, but i would still like to see him start over treanor when he comes back. and if we can acquire a better catcher we should do so.
July 11, 200817 yr He's our answer at catcher..........for now. Let's see how he handles things by the trade deadline.
July 11, 200817 yr My philosophy in these situations is to give the guy as long a look as possible 'til the injured player comes back. Unless we have a clear better option available I mean. Start Baker as much as possible, as long as he doesn't tire. Give him 75/25 platoon with Hoover 'til Treanor comes back. Let's see what we've got.
July 11, 200817 yr i wouldnt get my hopes up right now he has only played 2 games we all thought the same thing with rabelo and he ended up in AAA
July 11, 200817 yr i wouldnt get my hopes up right now he has only played 2 games we all thought the same thing with rabelo and he ended up in AAA we most certainly all did not.
July 11, 200817 yr We need to see more, obviously. However, I've been high on him for a while and think he should stay up and split time with Treanor for a couple of weeks after Matt's return, so we can get a better idea of what he's capable of. It's a better plan than trading for Olivo, for sure. I never cared for Rabelo, though, even when he started well...there was nothing in his minor league career to suggest he would be a capable starter.
