July 24, 200818 yr With the trade deadline coming up, I decided to see which trades that the Marlins have made (trade deadline or not) have not worked our, or the ones that turned out great. Best: 1. Dontrelle Willis for Antonino Alfonseca and Matt Clement 2. Mike Lowell for Ed Yarnall, Ed Noel, and Mark Johnson 3. Kevin Gregg for Chris Resop 4. Sergio Mitre, Renyel Pinto, and Ricky Nolasco for Jaun Pierre 5.?Derrek Lee for Kevin Brown Honorable Mentions:? - Cody Ross for Ben Kozlowski - Ugueth Urbina for Adrian Gonzalez - Jeff Conine for Don Levinski and Denny Bautista - Mike Mordecai, Graeme Lloyd, Justin Wayne and Carl Pavano for Cliff Floyd, Wilton Guerrero, and Claudio Vargas. - Brad Penny for Matt Mantei - Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, and Jesus Delgado for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell Worst: 1.Trading Bobby Bonilla, Gary Sheffield, Jim Eisenreich, and Charles Johnson for Mike Piazza and Todd Zeile 2. Trading Mike Hampton for Tim Spooneybarger 3. Trading Rob Nen for Joe Fontenot, Mike Villano, and Mitch Pageler 4. Trading Derrek Lee for Hee Seop Choi 5. Trading Luis Castillo for Travis Bowyer and Scott Tyler What are yours?
July 24, 200818 yr the Petit for Julio trade. Not because Petit is great, but Lugo was just god awful for us.
July 24, 200818 yr Just wondering... Why are the Urbina-Gonzalez and Hanley-Beckett trades even Honorable Mentions? Those are just trades that worked out well for both teams, imo. Also, Mike Hampton for Spooneybarger as one of the worst (2nd worst?)? What has Hampton done?

Also, Mike Hampton for Spooneybarger as one of the worst (2nd worst?)? What has Hampton done? I really wasn't going for how it helped the other teams, but how it helped us. Urbina won us a WS, and Hanley is right behind Pujols and A-Rod as possibly the best player in baseball, and Anibal had a no-no. As far as the Mike Hampton trade, Spooney barely pitched in a game, and we had to pay Hampton years after he wasn't even on our team. So I wasn't really looking at what he has done, but it was a terrible trade, because we were paying Hampton to pitch against us for the Braves.

Derek Lee for Hee Sop Choi is pretty bad, Lee has been down recently but Choi has done absolutely nothing.
July 24, 200818 yr Holy crap, nobody mentioned this "blockbuster": Moises Alou for Oscar Hernandez, Manuel Barrios, and Mark Johnson.
July 24, 200818 yr 2. Trading Mike Hampton for Tim Spooneybarger That was morre of a 3-way deal, with Hampton and Pierre coming our way, then Hampton going to Atlanta for Spooney. We were never going to keep Hampton, it was never in the cards.
That's also true. I believe we got Hampton AND Pierre from the Rockies for Preston Wilson, and then moved Hampton to Atlanta for Spooneybarger. No way that was the 2nd worst trade in team history.
July 24, 200818 yr I don't understand how Kevin Gregg for Chris Resop is the THIRD BEST TRADE IN MARLINS HISTORY, Gregg is an average reliever and that trade is almost a cancel out since Gregg will most likely be gone next year.
July 24, 200818 yr Moving Hampton (after Wilson and Johnson who were owed big $$ were shipped out as part of the deal) to the Braves cost $$ in the short term but was a stroke of genius if you look at what the Braves got for their money.

I believe we got Hampton AND Pierre from the Rockies for Preston Wilson, and then moved Hampton to Atlanta for Spooneybarger. No way that was the 2nd worst trade in team history. How was that not the 2nd worst, it hurt us financially for years to come. Because of that trade, we couldn't get some guys that we might of wanted.?
July 24, 200818 yr Author I don't understand how Kevin Gregg for Chris Resop is the THIRD BEST TRADE IN MARLINS HISTORY, Gregg is an average reliever and that trade is almost a cancel out since Gregg will most likely be gone next year. We traded a fringe major league player in Resop, who was in AAA for most of the 06' year to the Angels expecting to get a long-reliever, and we got a closer out of it. Despite his struggles this year, he has gone above and beoyond expectations.
July 24, 200818 yr I think that the Derrek Lee and Luis Castillo trades were the worst. Spooneybarger for Hampton was actually a GOOD thing for us, because we weren't strapped with his whole salary. He hasn't pitched in years, and I doubt he ever will.
July 24, 200818 yr Author We also wouldn't have had a ring in 03. Pick your poison. Obviously it helped us win a title, but we could of just kept Hampton instead of getting the oft-injured Tim Spooneybarger. If Hampton was healthy in 03' he could of helped us a bit.
July 24, 200818 yr Most of the Fishes best trades are the aquistion of a player and then flipping that player for someone else among the best of theses trades would be getting Ryan Dempster and Rick Helling for John Burkett........then later trading Dempster for Juan Encarnacion Getting Penny, Vlad and OMG Nunuez from the D-backs for Matt "Ice-Ice Baby" Mantei.......then sending Penny to Dodgers with Choi for LoDuca, Mota and Encarnacion again. How about getting Daulton for Billy McMillon or AJ and Jesus Sanchez for Al Leiter Some of the ones I would include in bad ones include trading Conine for Blaine Mull?!?!?!?, Bowyer and Tyler for Luis!!!!!!!!!!

Spooneybarger for Hampton was actually a GOOD thing for us, because we weren't strapped with his whole salary. He hasn't pitched in years, and I doubt he ever will. Yeah but for us, he was one of our highest paid players, and he was piching against us a lot, being with Atlanta.

Gregg is not an average reliever, even though he has had his struggles, he has still been pretty good for us in 1 1/2 years of play.

I'm not sure what you're complaining about. You do understand that we had to pay SOME of Hampton's contract to have Colorado take Preston Wilson's crippling contract and have the Braves ultimately take the bulk of Hampton's, right? In sum, we unloaded a monster contract that nobody wanted to take, received an inexpensive CFer who went on to set the table for the eventual WS champs, and saddled the Braves with an injured Hampton who the Braves had to pick up the bulk of the contract. We were only responsible for a small portion of Hampton's contract. Even if you added what we owed to Hamption straight up on Juan Pierre's salary, I think we make out light bandits. The only reason that money was significant, was because the Marlins' payroll is so low that ANY money we take on for a player who doesn't play for us is too much money. That said, objectively we won that trade.
July 25, 200818 yr You can argue that we lost the Hanley/Sanchez for Lowell and Beckett trade so far. I wouldnt include it in best trades. The reality is, if we had any sort of payroll we would have kept what we had and not made the trade.

The reality is, if we had any sort of payroll we would have kept what we had and not made the trade. I'd argue we won that trade depending on how Sanchez pans out. Even then, I would make it 10000 times over. Beckett is good, but Hanley is a once in a lifetime player.
