October 26, 200817 yr Stanton might be coming up in 2010. Raynor, Maybin, Stanton is a god outfield. Sry, i don't consider at the earliest 2 years is soon With the way he has been playing, I think it could be 2010. Even if it is late 2010 or 2011, we won't need to trade for a young outfielder to have their producion for just 1 or 2 years. i never said young outfielder. i said corner outfielder. That's irrelevant. We dont need any more outfielders, young or veteran.

October 26, 200817 yr besides raynor we dont have anyone who is a corner outfielder that is coming up anytime soon. Stanton might be coming up in 2010. Raynor, Maybin, Stanton is a good outfield. Raynor is not a good prospect to think about starting in the outfield. Cousins and Petersen are additional outfielders coming up soon. Stanton is not going to jump three levels of competition in one year. If everything is perfect, we may see him in 2011.
October 26, 200817 yr Whatever he is, he's not a closer, making his value decrease. You couldn't be more wrong here. He can be a closer for teams, he is more than adequate out of the pen. He can be a 1 year commitment versus signing Fuentes or K-Rod to $40-75 million dollar deals, to a team with bullpen issues. Additionally, putting Gregg as your closer for 1 seasons assures him of being a type A free agent after the season. This will give whoever we trade him TWO first round compensatory draft picks when he leaves in free agency the next year. This will recoup the prospect investment a team will have to give up to get him. This is a big deal. They don't have to 'mortgage the future' by sending us a good prospect for 1 season of him, because they will simply be able to draft new ones. He makes a lot of sense for mid market contending teams, like Cleveland or Milwaukee, who have a little cash to spend and need to upgrade their bullpen. This is exactly why Arizona traded the house for Dunn, they are getting draft picks for him. It's very likely Gregg brings a very nice prospect back.
October 26, 200817 yr We probably don't need more outfielders, unless they're veterans who could make an immediate impact. We need a couplecorner outfielders. Not with the prospects the Marlins have coming up soon. besides raynor we dont have anyone who is a corner outfielder that is coming up anytime soon. Stanton might be coming up in 2010. Raynor, Maybin, Stanton is a good outfield. I'm still hoping that in 2010 or 2011 we'll have Stanton, Maybin, Hermida. Jeremy will be 27 then I believe, in his prime, and hopefully producing something like what we had once hoped.
October 26, 200817 yr Just some thoughts that crossed my mind in reading the article and your responses. 1) All this information is under "South Florida Sports Chatter" in one newspaper by a writer that acts like he has inside sources, but very little of his reports ever come true. So take this information with a grain of salt. 2) Hypothetically speaking, if this chatter were indeed true, I find it remarkable how the Marlins would pencil in Gaby Sanchez at 1B next year to replace Jacobs. That would mean that Dallas McPherson could once again find himself in the minors or Jorge Cantu could be traded if the Marlins were to place Sanchez at 1B. Of course, this is just pure speculation, like I would think that article is. 3) How many times have we South Florida sports fans been promised an active offseason just to find our teams sitting on their hands because they don't have the balls to make a dramatic move? Yes, I know Admin Beinfest and Co. have done some pretty incredible moves, but I can't help to have this thought in my mind.

That would mean that Dallas McPherson could once again find himself in the minors or Jorge Cantu could be traded if the Marlins were to place Sanchez at 1B. Of course, this is just pure speculation, like I would think that article is. McPherson has a 100% shot of being on the MLB team next year because if they don't promote him they lose him. He is out of options. The Marlins can easily have Cantu, G. Sanchez, and McPherson all on the same team and getting PA. There is plenty of starts to go around.

October 26, 200817 yr . with willingham or hermida likely gone, that leaves us with amezaga, hermida/hammer, ross, maybin. thats only 4 Starters would be LF Cody CF Maybin RF Hermida Bench Amezega Carrol any OF we might obtain in the trades and Andino can even play OF along with any call ups like Cosuins maybe Raynor
October 26, 200817 yr with willingham or hermida likely gone, that leaves us with amezaga, hermida/hammer, ross, maybin. thats only 4 Ross/Maybin/Hermida is what I project our outfield to look like next season. That being said, why would we need to go look for somebody who would most likely only be a slight improvement over one of the starting outfielders? Yes, the Marlins FO could always sign someone to a one or two year deal, but it is still not a necessity in order to be competitive. It doesn't matter if Stanton doesn't get the call up to the MLB until 2011, it would be ridiculous to pay someone millions of dollars to barely improve the team.

He could easily start next season in Jupiter, and then work his way up to Jacksonville during the middle of the season. It's not definite, but he could possibly be on the Marlins roster in 2010.

Exactly we don't want to pull another Jacque Jones. :cool We could sign some one who has expirince and can still play good ball both ways and is willing to take time on the bench
October 26, 200817 yr For Gregg the most we could get is 5 bats, 10 packs of gum and a 40 year old backup catcher from class A. Who in the the right mind would want that abomination. He single handedly ruined our season.

He single handedly ruined our season. The Mets would sure love to have him last season as well would pittsburg and a few more teams who had crappy bullpens and closers. But Gregg is still a good MR and is probably not suited for a major closer role but he had a few Blown Saves where his defense could had bailed him out
October 26, 200817 yr Gregg was also hurt this year and tried to play through it. I don't feel he would be the top reliever on any team, but the whole idea of a closer is a joke anyway. For whatever reason it doesn't seem to bother anyone that pitchers who pitch the 9th inning get millions more than the ones who do the same exact job in other innings, and have the same odds of facing the opponent's best hitters. So, he definitely has some trade value, he's a fine middle reliever that looks more appealing because of the saves stat.

Not that I'm disagreeing with the idea of the 3-man platoon, but if that's the way the FO saw things then why sign Helms? With those three guys all on the same team and getting PA, Helms would become either exclusively a pinch hitter or see minimum playing time. I doubt the team felt 120 AB's coupled with veteran leadership is worth 1.9 mil. I prefer the idea of Gaby and Cantu getting the majority of PA with McPherson as a spot starter against RHP/ left-handed power bat off the bench (which we will severely need with the departure of Gonzo, Jacobs, and possibly Hermida).
October 27, 200817 yr Maybe they signed Helms because McPherson is a FA this year and they don't wanna resign him. That way they have a good 3 man platoon btw Sanchez, Cantu, and Helms. I honestly don't see how McPherson is so great anyways. I think that Sanchez and Cantu are way better than him.

You need guys like Helms because in real life guys get hurt. You plan your starting lineup but you need to have options for when they are hurting. We have those three guys for two positions, but we may need another one at some point and Wes provides a competent bat. It's also obvious that he is tremendously important in terms of our team chemistry.

I honestly don't see how McPherson is so great anyways. I think that Sanchez and Cantu are way better than him. Uhh... Neither of those two have ever posted a professional season like McPherson did last year. And Dallas is not just some random out of nowhere player... he was expected to be good, and is good. He's also a left-handed power bat. If he is not starting next year, I will be thoroughly upset. He proved himself last year... he deserves it.

But I am saying I would MUCH rather have McPherson at third and Cantu at first, than Sanchez starting.
October 27, 200817 yr Personally, I would love to have McPherson as an option off the bench. We probably won't have a pure left-handed bat off the bench next year (Amezega being a switch-hitter) and Dallas would be much needed. But he deserves a chance to start, if not with us then somewhere else. If Gaby doesn't win the 1st base job in spring training, then I could see a McPherson/Helms platoon at third to start the season. Considering that is unlikely, and considering McPherson's low trade value, it's more likely he starts the season on the bench ready to take over in case Sanchez struggles.

He's going to come to camp so motivated to win that spot he hits 10 out in ST. (As you can see my signiture, being out lineup next season).
