November 13, 200817 yr According to Jayson Stark, we may go after Orlando Hudson and move Uggla to third and Cantu to first....plus he thinks that Arthur Rhodes is someone that we NEED to bring back....heres the link http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor...;page=rumblings WHAT THEY NEED: Bullpen arms, defensive upgrades. FREE AGENT WHO COULD TOP THEIR LIST: Arthur Rhodes. HOW THEY'LL SHOP: This just in: The Marlins' payroll is doubling. OK, relax. They're only doubling $21.8 million. And arbitration raises will chew up most of that windfall. So while the Marlins won't remind you of the Yankees, that doesn't mean they won't do ANY shopping. If they can't re-sign Rhodes, they'll chase the Darren Olivers of the free-agent pool. They'll also hunt for low-budget outfield bats. And one name we keep hearing is Orlando Hudson, who would inspire them to shift Dan Uggla to third.
November 13, 200817 yr Now, if these are the type of players we are seeking, than what other players can possibly be on the Marlins shopping list, if Orlando Hudson signs elsewhere?
November 13, 200817 yr I do not see why we don't pursue a guy like Rocco Baldelli. Seems like the perfect Cantu-like scenario. He is talented, just inury-prone. He would be a low-priced option.

I am with you on that one. I've been thinking this since the world series, can't help but think one day he will be wearing a Marlins UNI.

The lineup would look phenomenal. The top 3 would be our up the middle - which is insane. Maybin R Hudson S Hanley R Hermida L G. Sanchez R Baker L Ross R McPherson / Bonifacio L / S Of course you have - Gregg, Uggla, Cantu, COGHLAN, Kensing, J. Delgado, and Andino to trade in this scenario. That is a lot, A LOT, of stuff coming back in trades. At least one A prospect for Uggla, at least B prospects for Gregg, Cantu, and the rest of Uggla, probably could get Choo/Francisco from Cleveland or Chris Duncan/Shucmacher from St. L for Coghlan to fix that 1B/OF spot, and the rest whatever. Longterm, wouldn't be a problem with atleast $ 8 million (Ross, Rhodes, Amezaga) coming off the books, and potentially up to $10.5-11 million if Hermida and McPherson tank. Coupled with our huge quantity of OF and RP prospects in the minors, West, and trading off Gregg, Uggla, Cantu, Coghlan, Ross, and Amezaga at a minimum, we'd be able to fill organizational holes and field cost effective teams pre stadium even with huge contracts to Hanley and Hudson. This could shockingly work, IF, payroll is closer to $40 and the team is fine trading Gregg, Uggla, and Cantu this offseason. Insane idea Jayson Stark, but it's a great team if they want or are able to do this.

And I bet Tampa keeps him for part time DH, part time RF.

He has no choice but to find a team that will actually start him. This guy was compared to Joe DiMaggio early in his career, and needs to live up to his potential, while sitting in the bench won't do that for him, let alone it won't even help him get a bigger check later in his career, he is young, expect YES TAMPA, and MARLINS among others to pursue him, he might not be after the money at this point, nor is anyone dumb enough to sign him for 4 million to warm-up the bench!

This guy has a lot more upside and 2 to 3 mil would be worth it because I believe he is much better than Ross. But, he is worth it to me and I agree with you that Beinfest won't take that gamble. And I agree that this is much riskier than Cantu was.

I personally would not want to see UGGLA go now that we do not have a cleanup hitter. Hermida has been inconsistent thus far and to expect consistency would be a bit extreme. He also would be batting behind Hanley and I think Hanley needs some sort of protection. Either Cantu or Uggla has to stay under the Hudson scenario. I would prefer both with Uggla moving to third like the article mentions. Financially, I do not see how this works.
November 13, 200817 yr I hate how this article says our payroll will double and every other article projects the Marlins between 32-35 million. That is a 9-12 million dollar difference.
November 13, 200817 yr I would absolutely LOVE to add Orlando Hudson to this team. He's exactly the kind of player we need. Best defensive 2B in the league, and a very good hitter (and a guy who draws walks). Pick him up and a corner OF and I'm pretty happy despite the awful trade with the Nats.

Hudson won't cost that much, I think he is basing himself on the last per year total that hudson had which was like 6 mil? What he fails to take a note of is that Hudson was hurt last year thus commanding maybe between 3-4 million dollars at most, but can be much less that that.

I mean no offense by this, but you really have no idea about baseball salaries with these two posts. Hudson is going to make much more than $6 million (which was in arbitration). $9 might be to low. He's one of the better 2B - offensively and defensively - in all of baseball. We'd be lucky to have him. He's better than Uggla and one of the few players around that could actually upgrade that position for us. Rocco on the other hand, they finally figured out what's wrong with him so they can medically deal with it now. That's always been the problem. He'll get at least a $2-3 million deal, with a TON of incentives, on a 1 year deal, if not much more. His potential is huge. He's not a $500k acquisition like low walk, strikeout happy, no defense Cantu entering 2008.
November 13, 200817 yr I do not see why we don't pursue a guy like Rocco Baldelli. Seems like the perfect Cantu-like scenario. He is talented, just inury-prone. He would be a low-priced option. He can't play everyday anyway. He has a form of Muscular Dystrophy called Mitochondrial Myopathy (atleast that's the strong rumor). He can run at full speed for very long. He's not what the Marlins should be looking for.
November 13, 200817 yr I can't digest anything in this discussion because of the fear generated that Darren Oliver is in the mix and could be back.

November 13, 200817 yr I like and respect Jayson Stark which is not to suggest I agree with him all the time but the idea of Darren Oliver, who hated his time here and let anyone who'd listen know how he felt about things, being reunited with this organization is just plain foolish. Maybe Jayson forgot some of the really ugly things said by Oliver upon leaving or he had a brain freeze or the name came to his head as an example of a second tier player that fit what he was describing but there is more chance Miguel Cabrera reporting to spring training weighing in at 185 than Darren Oliver every being signed by the Marlins again.
November 13, 200817 yr I thought he was fine now as well or would be fine. if he has a condition that makes him not run for very long, I dont see how he is worth so much.
November 13, 200817 yr I really hope we get Hudson. I really think Uggla would be a great outfielder if we keep Cantu. But if we have to get rid of one of them, I would rather have Uggla over Cantu. Like someone said before, imagine Maybin Hudson Hanley

I think he meant Darren Oliver-types (hence the quote "Darren Olivers of the free agent pool") and not necessarily Darren himself.
November 13, 200817 yr Getting Hudson would be insane. And if we can keep Uggla while signing Hudson, the we better do it.
