Which gaming system should I buy?

Featured Replies

I'm going to be receiving a school refund of about $1,100 in mid-February, and I've given serious thought to blowing it on either a PS3, Wii, or Xbox 360. For someone who's never really played video games in the past (but likes the idea of playing), which system would you guys recommend?

Well, I could offer a 4th/5th option in going portable with a PSP or Nintendo DS, both of which have heavy modding communities where you can do a lot of stuff.

Out of the first 3 you mentioned... I'd say the PS3 or 360. PS3 for it's alternative as a BluRay player and the 360 for having very highly rated games for the most part. PS3 has the free online network, IIRC, so I'd probably say that's the best bet overall.

Its all on how you want to play

PS3 gets blu ray and many badass shooting games, another plus is that the onine is free but games get be more expensive and blueray is like 22 bucs each.

Xbox 360 I belive is the best option, with a plethora of choice for games from any sport to kids and shooting and war, but a setback is the online is not free but 50 dollar for 14 months and you can still play COD and non EA games with Silver accounts. Plus it can play CD's and DVD's no problem and you can upload music into your xbox and play your ipod on it.

Wii is basically a family kid like based system. I love it becuase i can play wii sports all day every day but the game choices are limited and harder to play.

But with that money you can get an Xbox with an HDTV and Xbox live and 3 or 4 good games

The PSP sounds like a great idea (didn't know that it was also a BluRay player), but I know that the 360 has gone down in price and is probably a better system overall. Something to think about. Thanks for the advice.

PS3 is the Blu Ray player

PSP is the portable

The Xbox 360 has the better games and is cheaper. Then again, the PS3 has BluRay and free online play (which is $50 a year on the 360). Now, I say you get what you pay for when it comes to online play, so it really comes down to how much BluRay matters to you.

While the PS3 does have free online, I find the 360 online service to be much better despite the fee. Both are great though. Can't go wrong with either one of them. The Wii has its pros too, but I like the 360 and PS3 better.

For local multiplayer, you can't go wrong with the Wii... playing Smash Bros and Mario Kart when you have friends over is a blast. However, if you prefer online mulitplayer and single player, the PS3 and the Xbox offer better options. The Xbox library is superior to the PS3, however, it doesn't come with a blue ray player and you have to pay to play online. If you don't already have a blue ray player and want one the PS3 is your best excuse to get it, you are getting great gaming system along with a blue ray player and free online play.

If you get EyeConnect for you computer you can upload movies, music etc... and it plays instead of the video games music so its pretty awesome. Also, the free online network is pretty good. Nice web browser, download free games/demos, download movies, themes etc...

Plus I think if you have an HD tv you get a hdmi cable and it looks so much better. If you go to newegg.com too you can get a 100 HDMI cable from a store for about 5 bucks on there so it makes you even happier. And 360 doesn't even offer HDMI only component.

Great suggestions, all of you. Do I need to be online to even play a game? Or is that just to play with others around the world? I'm leaning towards the PS3 at this point, if only for the BluRay player (might as well kill two birds with one stone).

The Xbox 360 has this built in.

I have both, and I use the 360 much, much more than the PS3. I'd go with a 360, and this comes from an original Sony fanboy.

Windows Media Center ftw

PS3 is a better system so far as graphics, definition, etc. though your selection of top notch games on PS3 are limited. If you are planning to play primarily by yourself and not multiplayer games, dont get a PS3 because online play is a much lesser of a feature. The xbox360 is much better for that, though its $5 a month for subscription, whereas with a PS3 you dont need to subscribe. With xbox you get so many more options on games like Halo3, Gears of War(2), etc. and all of those great multiplayer games that just are not available on PS3, and everything else that is available for PS3 is available on xbox too, like COD4,5, GTAIV, Madden, etc.

If you want a better baseball game, MLB the Show >>>>>> MLB 2k9.

Other than that though, comparing PS3 games to xbox360 games, like NHL09 to NHL09, COD to COD, GTA to GTA, I've heard numerous times that the 360 version is better (well not for COD, but for others).

Another cool thing with xbox is that you get gamerscores. Everything you do is tracked on an xbox, so if you beat a game you can show it off. You get achievements for beating games, levels, etc.

ipod syncs directly to an xbox, not sure about the PS3. You can save your songs and play them while you are on your xbox during any game.

both of them offer downloading movies, netflix is available on xbox as an application for free, and you can use your pre existing account on it as well, and download a very limited selection of films directly from your computer within 15 seconds.

xbox also offers party features, so you can talk to up to 8 different people on 8 different xbox's playing 8 different games at the same time.

Id go with xbox, though if you are more for the graphics and single player games, go for the PS3.

360 maybe has the advantage in terms of games available atm, but only because its been out for a year longer.

PS3 is getting stronger all the time with exclusives such as Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone, Gran Turismo, God of War, Ratchet & Clank, Motorstorm and upcoming titles such as inFamous and Heavy Rain

Also to Dr Beinfest above - PS3 has trophies, which I think are similar to what u described as gamerscores - u earn trophies for doing things in games and can then boast among friends etc as to who is the better gamer

Its down to really what you want to play.

If you want a to play fun family games with friend you can get a Wii or Xbox 360.

For fun sports and action games get a 360 or PS3

For badass shooting and warfare games get a PS3.

I don't know if this is just me but Blue Ray and DVD look the same if you have an HD TV

But i know a way to settle the problem Mr Teal.

With 1,100 Bucs you can get an XBOX 360 For 199.99, a PS3 for $300 and a Wii for $150 Which should be around $650-$660 and you can buy 2 Xbox Games for $59.99, 2 PS3 games for 59.99 and 2 Wii Games for $49.99 for $340-$350 dollars and a 4 Blue Ray or DVD for 21.99 each for $87.96 for a grandtotal of about $ 1,097.96 which leaves you with 2.04 for Lunch so go on a Sunday and get your self 4 hamburgers for 49 cents each and have a nice day

Sales tax failure.

stay away from ps3. its trash. the blu ray player is only good if you have the proper HD t.v. for it and if you're willing to shell out about $30 bucks for a movie. the majority of the good games on the ps3 can be played on an xbox360 and the ones that cant will most likely get ported in the near future. the online service with xbox is far superior to anyone else. you do pay $50 a year for it but the money is worth it.

I dont think time has anything to do with it... its Microsoft. Stuff like Halo will never be available on PS3, and that is easily one of the best games of all time. More and more games are coming out for xbox just like with PS3. I agree, PS3 will have some great games, and some that wont be available on xbox, but the games I was referring to was those Game of the Year type games, Halo, Call of Duty, Oblivion, GoW2, etc. etc. and also has some pretty awesome games coming out exclusively for xbox, like TC's Splinter Cell Conviction, Fable II, etc. etc.

I dont have both systems, though I use both a lot because my cousin has a PS3 and an xbox360.

And yeah the trophies are similar, but they are not as... how would you say... combinational? is that a word? as the gamer points. The whole gamercard system dwarfs PS3's style, though its not a big deal considering it has really nothing to do with the performance of the systems, all that stuff is just xbox360 community vs. ps3 community, which both offer a nice share of downloads, etc.

Or you can sign up for Netflix and rent all the blue ray you want for around 10 bucks a month.

If not, don't worry bluray prices are dropping. At my store, a lot of Bluray movies sell for 24.99 and go on sale for 19.99 all the time.

Rumor has it the PS3 will be dropping in price sometime between april-june. RUMOR for now***
