February 1, 200917 yr The longer this last, the better it is for the Marlins. I'm, personally, hoping no team shows interests, and we get Pudge at a cheap price. That would make it a solid offseason.
February 1, 200917 yr I also agree. Pudge would be a great asset to the Marlins. Then, we would have quite a team.
February 1, 200917 yr Yep. every day he remains a FA, the better. spring training can't come soon enough.
February 1, 200917 yr I'm going to sign Pudge on my own. lololololololol...it's actually a very funny line if you think about it. People (fans of a number of teams, not just the Fish) say they want to sign him (not just this thread it's a common comment) for a "cheap price" which is okay if they mean a below market price probably still in the millions, it makes sense, but if people think Pudge is going to sign for anything approaching the minimum, I find it hard to believe he will. The guy is coming off a $40 million contract, and divorce or no, he's loaded, I believe him when he says his plan is to go to the WBC and use it as a showcase. If he performs anywhere near the level he says he expects to, let the bidding begin. It's actually the smartest way for him to approach it considering the market, the rap on him from last season's ill-fated stay with the Yankees (he played reasonably well in Detroit last season), the rap on him generally that he's washed up, etc., he has a number of hurdles to overcome so the WBC is a perfect venue for him to show his stuff. And his price goes up exponentially if he does.

Not only that, but when he's motivated, he seems to be more effective. I know that sounds like a "duh" kind of thing, but many players can't just turn it on. From watching Pudge, when he has something to prove, somehow he always just immediately turns it on.
February 1, 200917 yr If we can convince the Marlins to give $500,000 then we can get the 5000 or so members on this board to each contribute $100 to raise another half mill and then offer Pudge a 1 year, $1m deal. How bout that.....
February 1, 200917 yr I don't think he's going to get a lot of guaranteed money, regardless of the WBC. I think he could certainly get plenty of incentives, though.

February 1, 200917 yr There plenty of time till Spring Training but im worried someone might find intrest in him. ahaopefully we end up snatching him for a ood price maybe 1-2 Million if we get lucky and we end up having a great season.
February 2, 200917 yr am i like the only one who believe Baker can get the job done until Skippy? Rabelo is a def no, but i believe Baker can, over the year he had a .350 OBP in the minors and his hitting has improved dramticly over the past couple of years and it showed when he got called up.
February 2, 200917 yr I don't know that it's so much that people don't think Baker is capable, or capable of doing the job, it's that sh*t happens, players, especially catchers get run down, mishaps happen and it's a long season so "buying some insurance" isn't the worst idea in the world.

I agree, but we do need a good second catcher. Baker himself even admitted that toward the end of the season his tank was on empty. You definitely need another solid catcher (one that hits lefties well) that can snatch up 200 ab's. BUT, speaking on Baker, I think he's going to post very, very good numbers. All-Star caliber numbers, actually. He's the type of hitter that actually gets BETTER when they reach the major leagues. He's got great plate discipline. In the minors, pitchers tend to be much more erratic and all over the place. In the majors, they throw a lot more strikes, and Baker is the kind of hitter I think you'll see capitalize on this. Maybin as well.
