February 14, 200917 yr Mark it. Currently we need our bullpen to be stable, and we know that most likely Miller, Volstad, and Anibal will not be going 7+ innings on a regular basis. VandenHurk has always been a very good pitcher for 3 innings, putting him in the 6th and 7th inning will be huge for us. If VandenHurk makes the team that is. But if he makes the team and is put in that long relief/middle relief kind of role, i feel Vandy can fill a hole that can let us ease our minds when a pitcher can't make it past the 5th. He also will be able to start if needed. We have seen his talents, he just needs to keep his pitch count down. Every time he has gone down, he has corrected his mechanics and gotten himself back to the majors. I just feel that this is the year The Incredible Hurk gets his act together and makes our bullpen stronger, and may be the piece that leads this team to a playoff spot. Just my opinion.
February 14, 200917 yr I have always been a fan of the Hurk. He has shown on occasion some damn nasty stuff but the question is whether he can produce at the required level on a regular basis.
February 14, 200917 yr Author If this team has to rely on Vandenhurk, it's in serious trouble. their not going to rely on him, he's going to have to step up. Our bullpen has questions, no doubt, and we still lack a serious 6th starter that can come in if somebody falters.
February 14, 200917 yr Teams always seemed to figure him out quickly. I suspect he tips his pitches and once a team figures it out he's dead meat. If he can get past that he can pitch in the major leagues for years.
February 14, 200917 yr It's unlikely he even makes the team out of Spring Training. He has good stuff though. He'll be on the team, sometime this year...again.
February 14, 200917 yr Please make him RP. I don't know why this haven't been brought up frequent enough. He has all the making of a relief pitcher: good stuff but bad endurance.
February 15, 200917 yr No offense intended to Hurk, but I would expect him to be more of a AAA factor then an X factor for the Marlins. I don't expect him to be up very much unless someone gets hurt.
