March 9, 200917 yr Who is this McPherson you guys keep refering to? Surely not the Marlins Dallas that is very questionable with the glove and still dosen't hit very well at this level. I know, I know. He's a lefty and lefties look far better watching that 3rd strike go by. Plus he just tore up the PCL last year and we all know how hard it is to hit there. He is better than Cantu defensively, and Cantu at first is an even tradeoff with Sanchez in my book. Not to mention McPherson hasn't had one legit chance to prove himself at the major league level. I don't think there's anyway he produces anything less than Jacobs did, except with a larger on-base.
March 9, 200917 yr and still dosen't hit very well at this level. Only thing people are asking for him to hit is RHP. MLB career .816 OPS against them. I still never understand people who say he hasn't proved anything in the majors.
March 9, 200917 yr He is better than Cantu defensively that's certainly debatable... especially after all the back injuries he'd had in his career
March 9, 200917 yr He is better than Cantu defensively that's certainly debatable... especially after all the back injuries he'd had in his career He's not Josh Willingham running all over the outfield... His back doesn't exactly have a ton of stress on it. Regardless, that arguement is completely bogus. No person except Dallas can tell us if his injury past makes a difference in his defensive performance.

Nny Link and while Josh Willingham has had back issues, atleast he didn't need major surgery. to relieve himself of the pain

I think what Wild Card was saying was that his back problems aren't as big of a deal as Hammer's because he'll have less chances to aggravate it. And yes, McDallas got surgery, unlike Hammer. It was Hammer's insistence against surgery that landed him on the DL and made him miss 50 games after he hurt his back "running all over the outfield".
March 10, 200917 yr Definitely misread the part about Willingham. Thought he was suggesting him play in the outfield as well. So my apologies there

I don't think there's anyway he produces anything less than Jacobs did, except with a larger on-base. Maybe, just maybe if you had said "was" instead of "is" I may have brushed this one off. As in before ST of last year when he came in in his regular position and Cantu came in to learn 3B. But since the second half of last season there is no comparison. Cantu has him beat hands down. Career stats? 371 ABs gives him a OBP of .298 and a BA of .245. Defensively in 113 games he has a FPCT of .961.

I still never understand people who say he hasn't proved anything in the majors. Surprised you didn't try to add in his RBI double in Monday night's game. Looks good on the stats, dosen't it. BUT 1st inning vs RHP he had runners at 1st and 3rd with one out. Hit into a DP. And that was with the Tigers making 2 errors in that inning, something we should have capitalized on. 3rd inning he had runners at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs vs the same pitcher and he hit a lazy fly ball to mid CF. Now about that RBI double....It was a broken bat blooper that the CFer misplayed by diving for and it got by him. But it was a RHPer, so.... I know this because I was there. Can't always go by stats, sometimes it is better to actually watch guys play. Just ST stats? Yep. But for a guy that has the opportunity because of the WBC and has to really show his stuff to secure a spot on the 25 man roster. Just like a couple other guys that are playing this Spring, and we won't be keeping them all. Dallas may clear waivers and I don't think Andino will. He isn't the "given" to be on the roster come Opening Day that some would have us believe. There is a reason he was about the last call up last year in Sept. There is also a reason he only got a $50K raise that he jumped at this off season.

And it was his insistence against surgery again this off season that made him very tradeable to us. No secret I have no man crush on Dallas, but at least he realized what he had to do and did it. Until Hammer follows suit he will always be spending time on the DL. Teams will tire of that and he will become one of those FA guys that sign for small $$$ with an invitation to ST camp.
March 10, 200917 yr Just ST stats? Yep. and small sample size Yep. And small sample size two years in a row. But I'm still not impressed. And I don't have to be. But apparently, going by what happened last season and the off season, neither are the FO or coaching staff. But nice of you to totally ignore the rest of that post. Now let's see what happens while the WBC is going on and he gets every chance in the world to show his stuff.
March 11, 200917 yr Just ST stats? Yep. and small sample size And I do know it's only a small sample size when you don't have the same opinions as a Dallas fan. If you happen to really like this guy, then it's enough to know this is a star in waiting. Hyprocrisy always makes me chuckle.

Do you really believe there are people out there that think he is a star in waiting? At best he's the next Jack Cust or Russell Branyan. No matter how you slice it, 15 at bats in Spring Training is a very small sample size.

That and I'd really love to see where I commented on made some comment about how another player is a star it waiting off of a few ST at bats. How can my hypocrisy make you chuckle, when I haven't done what you are talking about? And I 'ignored' the rest of your post because all that needed to be said was what I said.
March 11, 200917 yr This fall I listened to an interview with McPherson (during the off-season) wherein he admitted he had a terrible spring training track record and he was working hard to make sure it didn't happen again. Considering he was aware of what he had to do this spring, accomplishing that and having a productive spring is for me an important barometer what might be expected of him during the regular season. In McPherson's case you have a set of special circumstances that makes his performance this month more important than a number of other position players as it can dictate his career path.

Last ST was pretty much the same thing. That 3B job was wide open and it ended up going to guy that didn't even know the position on Opening Day. Granted he got hurt towards the end of it, but watching him before the injury, I saw nothing that said I wanted him on the roster. Nothing this year either. Reading the posts from the stats watchers on here you would think this guy is something special the way they keep talking him up. Read the posts and then go watch him play, and it's a disappointment. But I'm not a coach or scout. Of course, going by the very late call up last season, the very limited playing time he got when he did get the call, and the very low raise he agreed to, I would assume the FO and coaching staff agree. The call up seemed more like a pat on the back for the power numbers he put up in AAA and to see if he had learned to hit consistently at this level. Of course the way Gaby is playing and the injury to The Amazing, he may make the cut. Watching him play 1B Monday night wasn't uncomfortable. He did okay there. Couple of nice stretches, etc. Nothing was really hit his way tho. Just seemed solid there. 3B isn't his calling, regardless of what his fans say.

Should Dallas make the team as a starter would u propose he plays 1B and keep Cantu at 3B then? I'm currently indifferent as to whether Gaby or Dallas earns a starting position. They both have their pros and cons and I dont think any one aspect of either of their games glares out saying they must be selected over the other.

I think McPherson's arm strength is much better as well. Cantu looks uncomfortable at third, but at first seems to glide around pretty well.
