Who are our backup outfielders behind Maybin, Hermida, and Ross now with Amezaga down?

brett carol should get every oppurtinity to be the number 4 outfielder

Gotta think Brett has the upper hand here as long as he can stay remotely healthy the rest of spring

 

(and hit the ball a bit too)

One of the other utility guys (Andino, Bonifacio) will be in the outfield a few times.

I think Amezaga or Andino is likely gone. Lack of options, injury and finances will play into that decision, IMO.

 

For the true outfielders I think it's between De Aza, Carrol and Gibbons. I like DeAza and I feel for him after his bad luck the last two years but I suspect he will start in AAA. Mainly because he's only 25 and is still testing out his ankle, so I don't think they will rush him unless he kills it the rest of the spring. I would expect he will be called up sporadically.

 

As for the other two, I think Gibbons brings some more offense, plus he's a left handed hitter. Carroll just has not figured out how to hit at this level so if he still has options its down to the farm for him to.

Based on the dynamics of the bench, If McPherson makes this team as the starting third baseman, I would much rather have Gibbons in the fourth outfielder role than anyone else. However, if Gaby is able to turn things around and secure the starting first base job (effectively placing McPherson on the bench), then I would be more open to some competition involving guys like Raynor and Carroll. And I don't feel losing guys like Jai Miller (in order to place Raynor on the 25-man) is a big blow to the organization when you consider the tradeoff.

I don't think I agree with sending Carroll down just because he hasn't learned to hit at this level. He plays excellent defense and has put up excellent numbers in the minors and learning to hit major league pitching isn't gonna happen in AAA. I'm not sold on Carroll as a major leaguer at all but if the organization believes he can be, it might be time to find out.

I heavily prefer keeping Gibbons over Gaby for this very reason. Let Cantu grab a corner, platoon the other side McDallas/Gibbons vs RHP, Helms vs LHP, and Gibbons serves as a 4th outfielder who can come in for Cody against some right handers. Andino/Bonifacio (or both) could serve as 5th outfielders. It makes a lot of sense. We don't need Jai, Carroll, or De Aza on this team.

I would lean toward De Aza, although I like Carroll as well. Nice players. However, my first choice would be starting Stanton, Maybin and Hermida all 162 games this season.

Love how you can bat .230, strike out over a 100 times and have stone hands, but as long as you can hit 10 homers AND steal 10 bases per year, you're considered a five-tool player.

I haven't seen anything I don't like about Jai. He fields well enough. Plenty of speed and takes nice routes to the ball. Haven't had the opportunity to see how much arm strength he has. He looks comfortable at the plate, just don't think his bat is ready yet.

Gibbons will have strengthened his case with his 3 run jack last night

carroll is the best option and he hasnt proven he can hit at this level because the only time he bats is once a week and hes expected to hit. if hes the number 4 outfielder he could proform. but my personall pick is michael ryan just because i know how long ryan has been in the minor leagues for sort of like Treanor. but thats personal reasons. The overall best choice is Carroll.
