November 5, 200322 yr Here is the LINK Castillo in pickle with agents By Juan C. Rodriguez Staff Writer Posted November 5 2003 Marlins second baseman Luis Castillo is one of three remaining eligible team members yet to file for free agency. Chief among the reasons is no one is quite sure who's supposed to file for him. According to a baseball source, Castillo will be in New York today for a meeting with the Players' Association to resolve the representation mess he's in. During the regular season, Castillo signed agreements with two different agents, Scott Boras and Seth and Sam Levinson. He did not inform either the Players' Association or his existing representation group of Adam Katz, Tom Reich and Craig Landis of any change. Once the regular season concluded, the Players' Association still had the Katz agency listed as Castillo's representatives. Though he delivered a key hit in Game 6, Castillo had a disappointing World Series, going 4 for 26 (.154) with a run, no walks and seven strikeouts. A source said Castillo was a no-show for the Marlins' parades last week even though he was in town. Right fielder Juan Encarnacion, who also missed the festivities, reportedly stayed in New York a few extra days visiting family. Coaching Options If the Marlins conduct an outside search to fill their coaching staff vacancy as expected, they might not have to look far. Someone they may consider to replace Ozzie Guillen is Cookie Rojas, a five-time All-Star and former player under Jack McKeon with the Kansas City Royals. Rojas, who can boast major league managerial and coaching experience, currently serves as a Spanish-language broadcaster on Fox Sports Net. A native of Cuba, Rojas was a member of the Marlins organization from 1991-96, serving as everything from a scout to special assistant to major league coach before joining the Mets. Should he opt for retirement, another person worth interviewing might be Andres Galarraga. The Venezuelan-born Galarraga, 42, resides in West Palm Beach and would no doubt be an influence on the team's Latin players. McKeon could also look into bringing in Ron Oester, one of his former coaches with the Reds. Currently a minor league infield coach for the Phillies, Oester was considered the top candidate to replace McKeon when the Reds fired him after the 2000 season, but he scoffed at what he considered a low-ball offer. ... Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis, center fielder Juan Pierre and General Manager Admin Beinfest have received legacy awards from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Willis received the Admin Doby Award as the museum's National League Rookie of the Year. Pierre won the Cool Papa Bell Award as the NL's stolen base leader, and Beinfest received the Rube Foster Award as NL executive of the year. The awards will be presented Jan. 16 in Kansas City, Mo. ... The Marlins have signed four six-year minor-league free agents: Catcher Matt Treanor and right-handers Aaron Small, David Manning and Marty McLeary. Treanor, Small and McLeary all were with the Marlins organization last season. ... Fox Sports Net will televise a 30-minute tribute to the Marlins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Craig Minervini will host the show, titled Florida Marlins Championship Special: The Will to Win. The program will air again at 2 p.m. Friday and 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
November 5, 200322 yr Author Castillo didn't come to the parade even though he was in town? That's cold. Well, I guess he was way too busy with the mess he created.
November 5, 200322 yr anyone else find it funny that Beinfest won a Negro League Museum award, after the Marlins got in trouble for not interviewing a black for the managerial position? I do.
