you give me a logical explanation as to why Matt Lindstrom does not have the potential to be one of the better closers in the game today?

 

First off, we were fortunate with both of those guys (Borowski / Jones). We were also fortunate with Kevin Gregg for most of his stay here. We've been very fortunate with closers.

 

People are infatuated with Lindstrom b/c he throws a 100 MPH fastball. Fact is, he's never put up impressive #'s, and he is most definitely no longer a prospect.

 

If he really is one of the better closers in the game today, it might be time to start showing it.

 

He has great stuff, yet his K rates are far from impressive. Should tell us something.

He has some control issues, sure. BUT, fact is, his career ERA is a damn solid 3.13, and he's given up 3 freakin' home runs in his career. You have to absolutely LOVE a closer that will virtually never give up the long ball. His K rates may not be what they should, but you can overlook some negitives for some other obvious positives. His stuff is fantastic. Flat or not, 100 MPH is 100MPH, and he does throw a two-seam that still sits at 95-97.

 

It's not like you said Lindstrom isn't a top-level closer (which is very true). It's the fact that you said at 29-years-old, he doesn't even have the potential to be. And THAT is flat out WRONG.

Hermida (the bust, of course) put up an .870 .OPS as a 23 year old in a larger sample, if I might add.

 

Hermida's minor league resume clearly shows him to be the better prospect.

 

This isn't hypocritical or anything.

And then you say Hermida, who has actually proved he can play in the bigs and had better minor league numbers than Murphy, is a bust. How? It has nothing to do with the Mets, it has to do with how much you hate Hermida.

being a good minor leaguer does not equal MLB success. I've seen Murphy and Hermida handle their call ups to the MLB differently, and Hermida's lack of care in the past as well as his unwillingness to hustle is what infuriated me about Hermida. He is showing some hustle this year, I'm hoping he keeps it up, but his swing is still one of the ugliest things i have ever seen.

ERA for a reliever = overrated stat. Check Joe Nelson last year, as a great example.

 

Lindstrom's also put up a poor 1.39 WHIP in his time as a big leaguer, which just goes to show that the 3.13 ERA is more a sign of luck than anything else.

 

Lindstrom has given up over a hit per inning in his 2 year career in the big leagues (I assume you only want big league #'s since you really only mentioned his 3.13 ERA).

 

His 2.2 K:BB rate is far from impressive. Definitely far from dominant, at least.

 

And if all these #'s keep up, his HR allowed total will go up.

 

It's not as if he's a sinkerballer producing groundballs left & right to just survive with average, at best, K rates.

 

Can he be average? Sure.

 

He's a long way from dominant.

 

And my point about him being 29 means that he's no longer a prospect. Seriously...when is he gonna get to that level of dominance that so many people expect?

Yeah Daniel Murphy has had the same amount of time as Jeremy Hermida

THE FIRST THING EVERYONE EVER SAYS IS HOW PRETTY HIS SWING IS!

 

He has a line drive swing that produces a good amount of power, I don't see how he swings for the fences everytime.

 

AND IT WORKED REALLY WELL WHEN HE HAD AN .870 OPS IN 07 AND LIKE AN .850 OPS ON THE ROAD LAST SEASON!!
