Back to Lindstrom, you say his HR rate is luck? OK, maybe after his rookie season you could say "there's no way he will give up that few homers with those numbers". Now, after year two of the same exact thing, how can you really dispute it? It isn't an accident, clearly hitters fail to get real nice shots on him. If he can mix up his pitches a little more, he's going to be fine. Even if the control doesn't improve, he may just be effectively wild.

 

And since when was ERA overrated for any pitcher? Starter, reliever, doesn't matter... A solid ERA is a solid ERA.

No. They are 15 months apart. At the age of 23, Hermida put up an .870 OPS at the major league level. At 23 Murphy put up the exact same OPS in AA. That's how far apart they are in skill. Hermida is so much more skilled.

For guys like Hermida and Murphy imo, OBP is a better testiment to their success. Hermida has shown limited power and only has hit for power in spurts. I want to see Hermida get on base, and that .247 BA last season was atrotious, add to that the 100+ K's and a .323 OBP and only scoring 74 times when spending a lot of time in the #2 spot and you have a terrible season for a terrible player.

The one thing I will contest in your post though WC, is that ERA doesn't necessarily reflect success... the studies show that the WHIP is more indicative of luck than not

Back to Lindstrom, he won't survive another year with low HR totals if the rest of the #'s stay the way they are. This is the first thing on this thread that isn't 100% fact, but this is the way you interpret #'s.

 

As for ERA...it's an overrated stat for relievers.
