Three Pitchers Available For Tonight's Game

Recommended Posts

Here's the aftermath of last night's 22-inning doubleheader, 10 1/3 innings of which the bullpen had to cover as four pitchers appeared in both ends:

The Marlins selected the contract of right-hander Cristhian Martinez from Double-A Jacksonville, recalled left-hander David Davidson from Triple-A New Orleans, optioned OF Alejandro De Aza to New Orleans and placed Alfredo Amezaga on the 15-day disabled list.

Andrew Miller is starting tonight. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said the ONLY two pitchers available beyond Miller are Martinez and Davidson.

The Marlins still don't have a starter for Saturday's game against the Rays. They could piggyback Burke Badenhop, who came up big with 3 2/3 innings in the night cap Wednesday, and Hayden Penn, or select Sean West from Double-A.

The guy who got the short end through no fault of his own is De Aza. He went 4 for 6 in the doubleheader, but the Marlins had to send him out to accommodate the additional pitching. The Marlins decided to keep Chris Coghlan because with Amezaga out, Coghlan can back up at second and third as well.

Barring an injury situation, optioned players cannot be recalled for 10 days, so you might see Brett Carroll return once the Marlins go back to 13 position players.

I think there is a fairly good chance that Cody may pitch again! What happens if the game goes to extra innings? Damn the Florida rain for creating this nightmare scenario (also blame some of our relievers (PINTO!!!) for blowing leads and causing other arms to have to be used).

Martinez is a starter. He can eat up a lot of innings if we need him to. His last game was the 16th so he's on full rest, and he's averaged 6 and a third innings per start so he goes deep. If miller can't get past the 4th, Martinez will probably be out the for the rest of the game.

Regardless if he is pitching great or mediocre Miller is going to throw at least 120 pitches tonight or 5 to 6 innings.

He has to take one for the team at this point.

Naw, that's what martinez is for. Martinez is basically a nobody (mean to say but basically true) who they don't care if they break. They have a lot invested in Miller. If Miller struggles, it'll be Martinez who takes it for the team.

Thank God!

Miller has been messed up enough as it is and it would kill him if he had to throw take it for the team.

Does anybody else notice that when Miller winds back on his leg kick he is more effective?

I was looking through some video of him this season and i find that he does throw more strikes when he makes a slight turn while lifting his leg rather then going straight up.
