Anyone have any idea how/why this makes sense?

Not to many people you can call up.... De Aza has to wait 10 days before being called back up.. I personally thought it was gonna be Brett C

Awesome, I like Brett :) .

so now we have 3 catchers on the roster (Baker, Hayes, Paulino). What exactly is the point of this call up?

Is Brett only a catcher?

Hmm...

Unless they feel like trying to start Baker at 1B, move Cantu over to 3rd, with Paulino/Hayes catching, this makes no sense. Even then, this makes little sense.

Damn, it doesnt make any sense :(

Hopefully its just temporary, and then they bring DeAza back up. Kid deserves to keep playing IMO.

More proof that the men in charge of our franchise have no idea what they're doing anymore.

There could be a reason behind this. Maybe Paulino is unable to play for a few days and Brett can be our back up catcher. There is no reason to have 3 catchers on our roster so there has to be some reason behind this call up.

Joe Frisaro says Hayes can play catcher, first base, third base or even left field. He sasy Maybin is still getting his timing down at the plate or else it would have been him. My question, why not Michael Ryan?

Another day, another roster move for the Marlins.

On Friday afternoon, catcher Brett Hayes was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans, taking the roster spot vacated when right-hander Cristhian Martinez was optioned to Double-A Jacksonville.

It's the first time Hayes has been on a big league roster.

After having 14 pitchers and 11 position players on Thursday, Florida opens the series with the Rays at Land Shark Stadium with 12 position players and 13 pitchers.

The reason Hayes got the nod, manager Fredi Gonzalez said, is because he can catch, play first base, third base and left field, in case of an emergency.

While center fielder Cameron Maybin is getting his timing down at the plate at New Orleans, Gonzalez said the organization wanted to give the 22-year-old more seasoning.

"It makes more sense to keep him back there, and get some at-bats," Gonzalez said.

Had Maybin been brought in, there was a chance he would only stay through the weekend series with Tampa Bay, and then be optioned back to New Orleans.

Hayes was in big league camp with the Marlins, and in 29 games with New Orleans, he's hitting .277 with one home run and 16 RBIs.

It's been a trying week for the Marlins. A rainout on Monday forced a doubleheader on Wednesday, and the bullpen that day was heavily used. Four relievers threw in both games -- Matt Lindstrom, Leo Nunez, Kiko Calero and Dan Meyer.

Nunez and Calero are not available on Friday.

Nunez was disappointed in himself for giving up a three-run homer to Arizona's Justin Upton in the 13th inning.

"He was upset at himself because he couldn't give us any more than he had," Gonzalez said.

The Marlins are hopeful Nunez will be available on Saturday.

As far as I can tell, in the minors, Hayes has played 306 games at C, 3 games at 1B, 1 game at SS, and 1 game in the OF (which looks like 1 inning), the last two in 2005.

I'm not exactly sure what they are talking about there.

The move is because our 40 man roster is full.

Only three hitters could be called up without DFAing somebody: Hayes, Jai Miller, and Maybin. It's been gone over by several people why it's not Maybin, so that leaves it down to Miller and Hayes. Hayes probably got the nod due to Fredi's affinity of PHing the catcher, thereby giving us a back up. Hayes will likely be down in the 5-odd days until BC can be called up. Not a big deal.

No sense at all in this.

My first reaction to this thread: WTF is the FO doing?

It certainly looks sketchy, although the article did say "in case of an emergency" (although I'm not exactly sure which positions they were referring to by that comment).

One potential use I can think of for Hayes is allowing us to use Paulino/Baker as pinch-hitters without worrying about having a catcher to play the field. And both Paulino and Baker are excellent situational pinch-hitters against LHP and RHP, respectively.

Darn you Nny! You beat me to it, and added in the 40-man insight :thumbdown

Baker was a first baseman before he was a catcher. He played first base at Midland in the Texas League to keep his bat in the lineup on days he didn't catch or DH. No errors listed on the stat sheet at first base. I agree that this allows Fredi to use situational pinch hitters without having to worry about making Wes Helms or someone else strap on the gear in case of injury. Baker would play first before Hayes ever saw the field.

Look like we will have to get a express between New Orleans and Maimi

Well, Hayes is playing first tonight.

Look like we will have to get a express between New Orleans and Maimi
