Posted June 11, 200915 yr For the first time in his career, Chris Volstad allowed more than 4 earned runs. He had allowed 4 earned runs four times in his 28 games. Today he gave up 6 earned runs to the Cardinals. Is having a game like this good for his development or is it a setback?
June 11, 200915 yr it's good for Volstad. He's spent his entire time in the majors always working out of jams, avoiding trouble. This is his first game things really didn't go his way. Its now important for him to regroup and come back with a strong performance.

He's also let 13 Home runs this season and was about a foot away from 14. He's needs to regain that command he had last year as he is leaving plenty of pitches up usually because he is behind in the count. Hopefully he regroups and come back strong next start which should help his development as a pitcher.

Yes this is a setback, he should be released immediately :whistle Seriously, he's a kid he's going to have good games and bad games, Beckett was a .500 pitcher until the 2003 playoffs and even there he lost a couple of games. So after about a year in the Show he's a .500 also, the HR's are a bit of a concern, but he'll learn from this and should be fine
June 11, 200915 yr Tonight was one of the few nights where Volstad really got beat up. Usually when he struggles, he is his own worst enemy, walks guy, gets behind in counts. Tonight, he just got hit really hard.

Yeah they were great starts and could easily have been both wins instead of both losses. This was his first game after 27 starts with over 4 earned runs. The kid is awesome.
June 11, 200915 yr Let's put it this way, Andrew Miller has 5 bad starts and one good one. Let's not beat up Volstad for his one bad one. Hopefully he will regroup, he's pitched a lot better than his numbers would indicate and he should have at least 6-7 wins by now if we gave him consistent run support.

Andrew Miller has had more than one good start. He's had 2 good starts and 1 good start shortened due to a rain delay against San Fran where if he didn't have to warm up 3 times before actually picthing again he could have gone a solid 7 or 8 innings.
June 11, 200915 yr I don't think theres any reason to panic about Volstad's latest performance. Even aces get hammered occasionally. Volstad has 2 tough games against the Yankees and Red Sox coming up which will be a good challenge for him.
