Posted June 25, 200915 yr Who do you guys think is our 3rd best overall hitter after Hanley and Cantu?
June 25, 200915 yr At the Moment it's Cody but Hermida and Uggla have also been proven hitters throughout their careers and are streaky along with Cody. Baker had a good year last season but hasen't shown much this season and Coghlan is going be be a solid 1 or 2 hitter for years to come and hopefully in a Marlins Uniform.
June 25, 200915 yr Ross is our 3rd best hitter but Cantu is not the 2nd best: 1. Hanley 2. Uggla 3. Ross 4. Cantu
June 25, 200915 yr Woah Woah when has Hermida proved anything? At least Uggla has put up some numbers up there, but Hermida is still riding on "potential".... btw I say its Hanley Cantu Cody Uggla

June 25, 200915 yr Hanley Cantu Ross Uggla Baker Coghlan Hermida Starting Pitcher of the night Bonifacio. ^my order of best hitter in the marlins
June 25, 200915 yr Hanley Cantu Ross Uggla Baker Coghlan Hermida Starting Pitcher of the night Caroll Bonifacio. ^my order of best hitter in the marlins You forgot a very important defensive replacement.
June 25, 200915 yr Baker and Hermida have been struggling a bit because they been moved ALL over the lineup. Baker has hit 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th along with Hermida. Freddy hasn't figured out a good lineup that HE WANTS.
June 25, 200915 yr right now its a tossup between Coghlan and Cody...but Coghlan is getting better and better

June 25, 200915 yr Looks to me like Tommy's infatuation with Coglan is spilling over to the fan base.

June 25, 200915 yr Looks to me like Tommy's infatuation with Coglan is spilling over to the fan base. Ever consider that Coghlan's .308/.388/.407 since entering the leadoff spot is what the fanbase likes? Especially given the .288 OBP the other guy had there?
June 25, 200915 yr When evaluating a player you're better served looking at the totality of his work. His production is fine for a rookie but he's not a better hitter than Uggla or Ross.
June 25, 200915 yr Well, do you mean the over the last 3 and a half years or over the last 3 months? Given them as a whole since coming here, our 3rd best hitter is probably Jorge Cantu, with the two-time All-Star 2nd. If you mean who has been the best hitter in the last 3 months, I'd argue that that it might even be Coghlan, with Cody second. Cantu has really fallen off since the beginning of the season, only hitting a Bonifacio like .246/.282/.335 since May 1st. Going by their season OPS's, it'd be Hanley-Cody-Uggla-Cantu. If you go by Runs Created per Game, then you get Hanley-Cody-Coghlan-Uggla-Hermida-Cantu. If you go with GPA, which a lot of people like, you get Hanley-Cody-Uggla-Hermida-Coghlan-Cantu.
June 25, 200915 yr When evaluating a player you're better served looking at the totality of his work. His production is fine for a rookie but he's not a better hitter than Uggla or Ross. I agree, but given the question and putting Cantu as 2nd, I'm guessing the question really is who's been the 3rd best this year. But, like I stated, that'd be flawed since Cantu hasn't been the 2nd best, either this year or over the totality of their work. Also, I wasn't disagreeing that maybe he's getting undue play, I was disagreeing with your notion that the reason he's becoming popular is because an baseball announcer likes him, as if it was some media slant that was making him liked.
June 25, 200915 yr I think bad announcers pollute fans with nonsense and help shape public perception. Case in point is Tommy's whining about hitting with RISP. Most people think we suck at it because of his whining but in reality we're better than average even after the recent drought.

Most people think we suck at it because of his whining but in reality we're better than average even after the recent drought. While you can make that argument perfectly validly, arguing that it's all Hutton's work that people like Coghlan as opposed to the fact that Coghlan has been extremely solid since taking over for arguably the biggest mistake our team has made is just wrong. This isn't a case of polluted perception, it's a case of most people on here having an extremely short memory, whoever is hottest is the best. Also, it's worth noting that the only guy who doesn't get the "what have you done for me lately" treatment here is Cantu himself. Even Hanley, if he's "only" hitting .290/.380/.455 gets that treatment.
June 25, 200915 yr I don't like Coghlan because of Tommy Hutton. I like Coghlan cause he's a good leadoff hitter.....much better than Bonifacio anyway.
June 25, 200915 yr CC gets my vote...I think it is too early to tell, but he is showing great discipline at the plate. Hoping he can keep it going

June 25, 200915 yr If my math is right, cc is on a pace to walk 90 times over the course of a season. He's been awesome. I've noticed bronco bob has stopped his whole anti coghlan 'golden boy' bulls***. That's testament enough to how good he's been.

The perception hasn't been polluted. Everyone is acting like he's been really really good because he's been really really good. Now, you could argue everyone is having too quick a trigger or that they aren't looking at the big picture, or even that they are overvaluing BA and OBP under SLG, but he has indeed been really really good, it's not a polluted perception.
June 25, 200915 yr An OPS+ of 98 with a line of .267 / .368 / .370 / .738 is not "really really good" and it's not as good as what Ross and Uggla are. If you asked me whether I would be happy with Uggla and Ross putting up those numbers the rest of the season I would say f*ck no.
