July 12, 200916 yr Phone calls are being made, and the Marlins certainly are looking to improve themselves before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. For now, whether anything gets done is a wait-and-see proposal. "We don't want to take away, we'd like to add," Marlins president of baseball operations Admin Beinfest said. The Marlins feel they are very much in the National League East race, and specifically, they'd like to add relief help. If a closer could be obtained, they'd be interested. "We'd like to improve just like all the other teams looking to improve," Beinfest said. "We recognize, we're heading into the All-Star Break, and we're in the race for the division. So you want to see what's out there to improve yourself the best you can. "There are so many teams in it, that it's tough to make trades. They don't want to take from their team. They want to add to it. In terms of your prospects, you have a threshold on what to give and not to give." Closer Matt Lindstrom is on the disabled list with a right elbow sprain. Beinfest is not optimistic that the right-hander will be back by the July 31 trade deadline. "We'll make due with what we have," Beinfest said of the bullpen. "Those are good arms, and by and large, they've done a good job. We'd like to get Matt back. We hope he's on the mound here in the next week or so, and start that progression." With Lindstrom, Beinfest added: "I don't know. We'll see the progression. We'll have him on the mound, and we'll have a better idea. You can deal with what if? But we'll look at everything, and move on, and hope that he comes back." Recently, the Marlins signed veteran right-hander Luis Ayala to a Minor League contract. Ayala could help the team after the Break, after he gets some work in the Minor Leagues. In terms of possible trades, Beinfest said the landscape changes daily. "We'll see what happens. It changes from day to day," he said. "An injury today, or something happens. Or you have a bad week. You're in. You're out. It always gets dicey when you get to the end of the month." http://joefrisaro.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/07/marlins_want_to_add.html
July 12, 200916 yr Can we add by subtraction? Get Hermida and Uggla out of here. Get Maybin up here and get Coghlan to 2nd or Boni to 2nd. Instantly improves the defense and I think the hitting gets all around better.

If by adding, you mean to the loss column.
July 12, 200916 yr Hermida doesn't go up there looking to hit. He can't play defense, and he doesn't make adjustments. He'd be gone last year if he wasn't so full of "potential". And would you rather have an outfield of cogs, Cody, Hermida or Cogs, Maybin, Ross? All around game i'd take the latter.

And would you rather have an outfield of cogs, Cody, Hermida or Cogs, Maybin, Ross? All around game i'd take the latter. Right. Handed. Pitchers. Those are the guys we see the 70% of the time. And you know who been hitting them better than anyone but Hanley? Jeremy Hermida. I'm not going to count on Maybin, after his first stint this year, in a playoff run. Carroll can't hit them, Coghlan has been no good against the either. This is not the time to throw Hermida away, unless we trade him with some specs to find someone who can hit righties at least somewhat okay. Also, as to what our OF should be, right now with the way Jeremy is sucking vs LHP, a platoon of Carroll/Hermida is looking really nice.
July 12, 200916 yr i'm happy with our bullpen and the veteran additions we made to it. hopefully someone in the minors can contribute as a reliable number 5 in the rotation (RVH). that leaves 3rd base even though bonifacio has been hitting better. we need any upgrade, either from our system (gaby) or through a possible trade.

This is not the time to throw Hermida away, unless we trade him with some specs to find someone who can hit righties at least somewhat okay. All of Cogs, Ross, and UGgla have been very good against rightys this year, not to mention it isnt all about offense. Hermida has to be one of the worst rf's ive ever seen. And how do you know Brett Carroll isn;t good against righty's? He's has 32 ab's. Nobody thought he would have the success he has had against lefty's now. Id rather give him/Maybin a shot, not because they will mash righty's, just because they will drastically improve our defense, and do a fine enough job to cover the load. Just goes to show you how awful Hermida is in the field.
July 12, 200916 yr Fun fact: Coghlan's OPS is closer to Bonifacio's (.048 points) than it is Hermida's (.056 points) He also plays the most offensive demanding position out of the 3. Not calling for Coghlan's head but I just find it funny.

Not calling for Coghlan's head but I just find it funny. Been saying it for a while. People forget that Coghlan is not a second basemen and yet he seems to be judged according to second base offensive standards. We could probably get the same production out of John Raynor at some point and yet everyone says "his bat isn't powerful enough to play a corner OF position." And Coghlan's is? And I also think that people would be entirely down on Maybin if he were producing at the same level. I wouldn't be surprised to see Maybin playing in lieu of Coghlan very soon because we can get a lot better than Coghlan's sub-.700 OPS. And I know that Coghlan's improved since he first was called up, but he is starting to level off again and if we're gonna talk about substantial improvements, we really need to give Bonifacio his due over the past couple of weeks.
July 12, 200916 yr john raynor isn't even producing at the level that Coghlan is in AAA. It isn't just about Raynor's lack of power, it's also about his strike outs that completely hinder his average and OBP. If he had Coghlan's plate discipline things would be a lot different. However I really don't think anyone advocates Coghlan for a LF spot and he's only there right now for lack of anything better outside of a trade.

However I really don't think anyone advocates Coghlan for a LF spot and he's only there right now for lack of anything better outside of a trade. When I reference John Raynor, I'm more referencing what everyone imagined Raynor to be before he tanked this year. He was supposed to be an under-rated fringe prospect. The discussion isn't really about him as much as it is the idea of LF production, and how some seem to forget standards for this position when a guy who usually plays another position is moved there. And while your claims on Coghlan are dead-on, he's been very heralded every time he makes a contribution and some on these boards even seem to think the idea of him not playing is ludicrous. But there is absolutely nothing special about a LFer that walks every now and then, gets some singles, and the occasional XBH.
July 12, 200916 yr Hermida > Coghlan, yet somehow Jeremy has got to go and Chris can have the key to the city. Somehow Uggla is a liability, but no suggestion on what to do to replace him. Jackassery abounds. Hermida is solid v. RHP and would platoon well with Carroll. Uggla is OPSing about .800 since June 1 and hasn't been legitimately hot yet.
July 12, 200916 yr Do I sense some hate on Coghlan? Really though, the real reason Coghlan gets so much love is simple. We need a new leadoff hitter because Bonifacio sucks, and he came in and got the job done. He isn't a starting left fielder or a starting third baseman. He is a second baseman. But Uggla is blocking him at second base. And we can't put him on the bench because he is doing a good job leading off. So the only solution was to put him in Left Field.

And all the organizations that want him in the trade negotiations, and the prospect charts, and his minor league numbers. He's been in the league for a couple of months, he's not doing great now but a lot of that enthusiasm is for what's ahead not exactly today. The kid has a great approach. Ya Coghlan should be at 2nd base for his type of production, but Uggla should be in LF with his usual production.
July 12, 200916 yr So... do you trade Sean West (I suspect even though he's hit this rough patch he has big time value on the trade market)? do you trade Aaron Thompson? do you trade Cristhian Martinez? do you trade Chris Coghlan (His MLB progress report probably looks a lot better than his stats would indicate)? do you trade Rick VandenHurk? If you're "adding" it's those above + Class A and High A prospects. There's isn't much left at AAA/AA after the guys mentioned above.
July 12, 200916 yr What big bat is available in the minors/majors that we could go for? More importantly who can they afford to acquire? Who other than Hermida are they willing to trade? Do the Marlins have untouchables?

Do the Marlins have untouchables? Hanley and J.J. basically untouchables as of now you could also throw in Leo, Meyer and Calero.
July 12, 200916 yr I suspect at this point, with the stadium deal now online, as unsavory as it might be the Marlins may look at good hitters with bad contracts where taking on the financial liability translates into minimal compensation going to the other side. Player X is owed $30 million over the next three years and is playing well, but not $30 million "well". Plus all he's doing is holding back someone in their minor league system that they'd like to bring up. Where in the past if the Marlins were interested in Player X they would want his existing club to pick up most of what he's owed and compensate them with prospects, this go around they'll pick up $20 million of the $25 still owed in hopes he plays well and they can move him this offseason even if it costs them another $5 million to do so knowing they can be on the hook for everything if they're wrong. Scouting reports indicate a change of scenery and a bit more protection in the lineup can make Player X significantly more productive. This is a big departure from their usual business plan but if the playoffs are the goal they'll have to take risks they were never willing to take before.

I believe paragraph two (Beinfest quotes) refers to the immediate short term and the opening one (Frisaro's thoughts) to the remainder of the season.
July 12, 200916 yr Rab is right. I don't think there is any sense to replacing Uggla or Herm at this point. I think we are going to have to wait for deals in the offseason. To difficult to make a deal before the deadline without losing WAY to much.
