Dan Uggla and Ryan Tucker for Matt Capps and Steven Pearce.

As we all know, Uggla's gone. The Pirates look like they're about to part ways with Freddy Sanchez. Not only would we get our legit closer but we would add an outfielder that's ready for the majors that OPSed .877 in his minor league career and has above average defense. Pearce would allow us to platoon Coghlan and Bonifacio and call up Sanchez to play third.

I think this is a pretty good idea. Trading Uggla would allow us to move Cogs to 2nd base where he belongs. Then we could recall Cameron Maybin and he could be in our lineup again and probably leadoff or hit second. The only thing that worries me is that I look at Matt Capps the same way I look at Gregg. Matt Capps does two things: 1) He gets saves, and 2) He blows games. He is a shaky and inconsistent closer. He may get the job done, but its always a risk of him sucking (like when he blew a 5 run lead in the 9th against the Phillies) Its a good idea of a trade, but Matt Capps is not the guy I want to close out games for my team. Trust me, I've witnessed the damage he's done first hand (he's in my fantasy team.) :confused

I like Pearce but Capps isn't worth it.

You might as well just put Tucker as our Closer then to get Caps and go straight up Uggla for Pearce.(which is a bad deal)

I don't know why they would do this. If they want an expensive 2B they should keep Sanchez. They're kind of trading Uggla for Sanchez and Tucker for Capps and Pearce. Makes no sence for them to do this.

I also don't really understand the concept of trading a 800 OPS 2nd baseman for what amount to a 800 OPS ofer, especially with all the OF specs we have from AA and up. It doesn't make us better short term and it doesn't really help us long term.

He's also not a plus defensive OFer. he's a first baseman that's playing the OF because LaRoche is blocking him.

Actually I rather doubt he even hits a .800 OPS.

He'll probably BB about 7% and K about 20% in the majors. He has poor BABIP skills so he's not going to hit for average and it'll probably be around .290 in the majors (career .305 BABIP in the minors, and this almost always goes down in the majors as you play better defenses and better pitching). He has a .227 career ISO which means he'll probably have around a .180 ISO in the majors. that'd be ~35 doubles and ~25 HRs. All that combined means a roughly .260/.310/.440 line, or just a .750 OPS.

He certainly has a lot of room to improve off that, mostly with AVG if he improves in his BABIP skills or lowers his K rate, aswell as power numbers, but he doesn't have all too much potential

Not a fan of the idea.

IMO I think UGGLA has a huge second half... Not only is he going to need it for the Marlins to get to the playoffs but it may increase his market value for an offseason trade

our bullpen is fine. and we have insurance in the minors with the signings of veterans. our offense is inconsistent as is so it would only get worse without our 2-time allstar second baseman

Me no want.

So we lose one roster spot in Uggla and we bring onboard matt capp steven pearce and gaby sanchez. :banghead

so who else gets cut?

and we don't have a second baseman so we have a platoon of coghlan and bonifacio so gaby sanchez can play third which he can't or at least very well.

bonifacio is leading off and coghlan is riding the pine tonight. hermida is batting 2nd.

He's always been a worse second half player.

Why would the Pirates do this? They have no need for Uggla. He's too old. They need younger players like Pearce more than declining second basemen. I also think they would like to get something better than Tucker for Capps. It doesn't work for either team imo.

Also not a fan. I'll take my chances with Uggla the rest of thsi year. I don't think his trade value will decline much more, and an 800+ OPS potential at 2B, as Nny said, should not be moved for an 800 OPS OFer.

2007, Dan Uggla:

1st Half - .247/.318/.488 (.805)

2nd Half - .244/.337/.469 (.805)

Same OPS, but 2nd half is more OBP-driven, so here he looks like a [slightly] better player in the 2nd half.

Certainly, he was a good bit worse in the 2nd half in both 2006 and 2008. But, I mean, 2/3 = always? If he was better in the 2nd-half of 2006 but sucked like he did in the 2nd half of last year, would be "always" be better in the 1st half? (Obviously not.)

Unless something drastic happens in the next month (e.g. a big losing streak, injury to one or more starters) I think the Marlins will wait until the off-season to trade Uggla. I kinda like the thought process given and really like Pearce, but only because he's from here in Central Florida, not because he's a great player.

Not very satisified with Ryan Tucker though Dan Uggla can be Ok!
