Starting Pitching could cost us the Playoffs

Featured Replies

Eh i think that if you can get Johnson and Nolasco to pitch well plus Volstad can be solid/good and one other guy (West or Sanchez or whoever) gives you something to keep you in the game constantly then we have a decent shot.

Thats a lot to ask for from this staff and to be honest the one I have the most reservations about is Volstad. It looks to me likes hes wearing down and if he cant pitch well then we dont have much of a shot. right now hes the X factor on how much of a run we can make.

We are golden if we get the JJ from the whole season, the post-all star break Nolasco (before the Astros game), and the beginning of the season Volstad. Will they all come together? Probably not.

I would have thought our OF would keep us from a playoff spot

Yeah Hermida is outstanding.

And i said corner outfield:

Yes, and at the time, our corner OF was Jeremy Hermida & CODY ROSS. Cody's really been terrible.

The only OF'er you weren't worried about (Maybin) is currently in the minor leagues.

Are we still "chalking that one up for Retro?"

That's really not true at all, Nolasco has been sick since he came back from the minors, obviously his last start was bad but that happens to everyone sometimes. If we get to the playoffs and he's pitching like he has been for most of his starts since coming back, we possibly have the 2nd best 1-2 in the NL. And really that is all it takes, as long as your 3rd starter is ok..

Not really because if your 1 and 2 starters both win but your 3-4 and 5 starters all lose the your going to finish with a losing record.

You need 1 or 2 good starting pitchers the 2 solid starters that can give you 6 or 7 innings every game then at most 2 average starters that can get through at least 5 innings.

To think that before the season started everyone was so excited about our starting rotation and we thought we'd have the best or one of the best in the MLB and how it was going to probably be the strength of the team. Now look at our rotation we have one All Star, one who's having trouble with the long ball and one who had his troubles at the beginning of the season but has came back and been very good to go along with a plethora of guys who have been in the 4 and 5 spots in the rotation.

I love how you post this and then the same day JJ nearly throws a no-hitter.

Starting pitching doesn't matter so long as we win our games...

Yes, it is indeed a problem, but it's a bit too late to try and address it now.

I'm talking about during the actual playoffs...you don't even use a 5th starter ever in the playoffs, and in the 5 game series you only need 3.

Wow, stating the obvious. I agree that Volstad is wearing down. I'm hoping West will show us the consistency I saw on Thursday night. Ricky needs to stay consistent also. I think the Wild Card is Anibal. If we can get him to throw the way he's been in the minors we'll make the playoffs even with the other inconsistency.

The offense is pretty much carrying this team right now. Pretty much the opposite of what happened in the second half of last year.

Starting pitching is likely going to cost us the playoffs. As much as i hate to admit it.

Agreed. We can't expect the offense to hit 10+ hits every game. However, I think the fish have a decent chance still.

We wont be able to get 10 hits a game, but its certainly not hogwash to believe that this offense can hold out until the end of the seasoon...
