August 20, 200915 yr The guy is gonna be 30 in two weeks. It's expected of him to be dominating AA hitters.

Neither did Volstad for that matter. You give West another 7 years and I think he'll be able to pitch like that in AA. Same with Volstad for that matter.
August 20, 200915 yr ok, you say "obviously he should be dominating AA"... but... hes NEVER Been called up. give it a shot! why the f*** not! half of our rotation is garbage
August 20, 200915 yr Having nothing to so with West or anyone other than Nic Ungs, players mature and their game comes together at a wide range of ages. Obviously as a player gets up in age the chance he'll find himself in his late 20's or early thirties goes down but look at Gardner as example of someone who came into his own late. Ungs has been an underachiever for a number of years in the minors. I've been trying to figure for a while now why he seems to have turned his game around. Some of it has to be due to his repeating this level and just getting "smarter" about the art of pitching but the possibility exists he's finally made a quantum leap in his skill level. I don't pretend to know which. It will be interesting to see if he is a Sept callup which may signal that the organization thinks there's something there they want to see against major league pitching. If he's not called up that probably indicates their perception is he's not much more than a professional minorleaguer but that said, so was Jeff Fulchino (ex of the Marlins organization) until the Astros took a flyer on him.
August 20, 200915 yr Author Bad example ... Fulcino. It was like bp for the Marlin hitters when he was throwing last night. I don't care how old Ungs may or may not be, if he doesn't walk people and can throw strikes without delivering them down mainstreet, I want him in the rotation. "Ungs" and Uggla on the same team .... awesome.
August 20, 200915 yr ummm, u have to have good stuff if u want to pitch in the majors no matter how little he walks. if he were maybe 24 at the most then id give him a try, but no.

Hell, with his low ERA this season I'd think you'd use him as your example.
August 20, 200915 yr I only used Fulchino to make a general point (mostly because he should be a recognizable name as an ex-Marlin farmhand) as I did with Gardner. Late bloomers, seemingly destined to be AAA players who found his way into the majors (ignoring brief callups over the years) late in their professional careers with some success (Fulchino, 3.66 ERA this season).
August 21, 200915 yr Lot easier to be a reliever than a starter. If we want to bring him up and give him some garbage innings and see if he can do anything with them, that's fine.

Let me make sure I am reading this correctly, my friend. You are saying that age, and therefore previous experience, does make a difference at the A and AA levels? I'm not disagreeing with that point, wholeheartedly agree in fact. I just want to make sure that is what you meant so I can bring it up during one of our face to face discussions. Know where I'm going with this?

More so the age and experience in A ball.

Know where I'm going with this? Let me guess...Bonifacio? No idea how you could come up with that. I say Gaby should have been playing head and shoulders above other players in A and AA because of the age, and most importantly, the experience of 4 years at a major university in a very good baseball program. Playing vs and with kids right out of HS or even younger. Rab disagrees. No biggie. Just some playful discussions.
August 22, 200915 yr Author I'm wishing that Ungs was starting the Marlins game tonight. I'd feel there was a chance of winning the game tonight. With Volstad going, I'm feeling there is absolutely no chance. He'll be knocked out by the fourth inning.

Ungs first season at AA was 7 seasons ago, Gaby's first season was last season.

I wish we called up Ungs just so he got destroyed by guys who could actually hit a curveball and you could stop with this foolishness and move on to the next ancient nobody who's been toiling around in the minors for a decade.
