October 17, 200916 yr Please bring him back! I know it says he doesn't want to coach, but maybe they can persuade him to rejoin the team... http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/pirates/s_648573.html?feed=14 Unhappy with trades, Pirate first base coach jumps ship Buzz up!By The Tribune-Review Saturday, October 17, 2009 Last updated: 12:13 pm The Tribune-Review can be reached online or at 412-321-6460. Perry Hill has left the Pirates after one year as the team's first base coach, the team announced today. Hill is recognized as one of the best fielding instructors in baseball, and his departure was not unexpected. Hill has expressed unhappiness that the team traded three-fourths of the infield during the season: Jack Wilson (Seattle), Freddy Sanchez (San Francisco) and Adam LaRoche (Atlanta). "We made an aggressive attempt to bring Perry back, including exercising his option for the 2010 season and offering to restructure and extend his contract. Despite these efforts, Perry has decided that he does not want to coach," said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington. "We respect Perry's decision, appreciate his service to the organization and remain open to Perry returning to the organization if and when he desires to coach again." The Pirates also promoted Triple-A pitching coach Ray Searage to the major-league staff in an undefined role. Searage likely will be groomed as the successor to pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, who will return for a second season with the Pirates in 2010.
October 17, 200916 yr I wanted him to come back initially, but I have now changed my mind because you guys are so enthusiastic about possibly hiring him.
October 17, 200916 yr (Lol Pengie...ever the contrarian :brigginbounce ) I thought the operative portion was. "...and his departure was not unexpected. Hill has expressed unhappiness that the team traded three-fourths of the infield during the season...", my assumption being the Marlins knew this when they made their coaching moves. I'm not saying he's headed back here because it may have to do with other factors, but the single best chance for Ramirez to truly mature into the game's premier shortstop would be for him to spend the next few years under Perry.
October 17, 200916 yr (Lol Pengie...ever the contrarian :brigginbounce ) Hill had a very impressive and widely praised 14 year career, but I'm disappointed that he did not have greater success in Pittsburgh so I think the Marlins should pass on even interviewing him.

It sounds liek the pirates excersised his option to lock him out of joining other teams. It's the pirates or nothing I fear for Hill.

Sarcasm? If not: Hill Mazzone had a very impressive and widely praised 14 year career, but I'm disappointed that he did not have greater success in Pittsburgh Baltimore so I think the Marlins should pass on even interviewing him.
October 18, 200916 yr Yes, I'm being sarcastic. Thank God. Believe me, I would love to have Hill back. Letting him slip away initially was incredibly irresponsible. I can understand the leave he took for his sickly wife, but he never should have shipped out to Pittsburgh.

When it was first announced that Fox wasn't coming back I said I would have to take cold showers if we got Perry back. Them exercising his 2010 option was merely paperwork that can be overcome. Do the deal and I'll turn my hotwater heater off.
October 18, 200916 yr Not to say Perry Hill couldn't help just about anyone be a better infielder but (putting aside Hanley for a moment) it really depends on how the Marlins set about assembling their 2010 infield and who those players are to determine exactly how important Hill would be in Miami. Whether he's a necessity or a luxury remains to be seen until Beinfest and Hill start making their moves. We also don't know if there are underlying factors - family or others - that may be shaping Hill's decision.

Certainly if the Marlins are thinking about trading Uggla and Cantu (and decide not to pursue Nick Johnson as a free agent), Hill would need to be made aware of this before any contractual negotiations would begin. I don't think not resigning Nick Johnson would be a dealbreaker, but I think Perry might want advanced warning that high might have to attempt to get through to Emilio Bonifacio.
