The Rangers are exhibiting strong interest in Marlins third-baseman Jorge Cantu, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.

The Rangers are in the market for a first-baseman and designated hitter. Cantu would fit that bill and has the ability to fill in at third base as needed. Morosi suggests pitcher Brandon McCarthy as a trade target for Florida, but the Marlins would almost certainly want more. In November, we heard Cantu is "almost 100 percent" certain to remain with the Marlins through the winter.

Would Uggla stay if Cantu was traded?

Also you'd want more for Cantu than McCarthy...

The Rangers are showing "strong interest" in Marlins infielder Jorge Cantu, according to one of Jon Paul Morosi's sources. The FOX reporter writes that the Rangers could offer a starting pitcher in exchange for Cantu, though Kevin Millwood's $12MM salary is almost certainly too much for the cash-strapped Marlins.

Brandon McCarthy might be a better fit, according to a second source. The 26-year-old will likely earn about $1MM next year.

Interesting, if teams don't give us the right package for Uggla.. Will the team swap and trade Jorge and keep Uggla? IMO I think Uggla us gone regardless what happens

The difference between them is going to be around $2 million. Which means, you then have to shed an extra $2 million. Which means you get rid of Nunez, or you get rid of Anibal + the ability to sign an extra veteran for your bench. Plus forcing someone to 3B you don't want there, i.e. Coghlan or Bonifacio since Dan seems to be a crybaby with this whole 2B thing.

Still think you eventually get what you want for Uggla. Just have to wait out the market. A deal is going to present itself. We need Cantu to cover 3B for a year.

coghlan cant be worse at 3b then cantu

coghlan cant be worse at 3b then cantu

True, but with no longterm future at 3B or LF, I think any situation where Coghlan isn't at 2B as a waste of our time. We need to groom him there NOW.

In fact, I feel so strongly about doing the best thing possible for Coghlan, who may emerge as our 2nd piece to build the team around in the field with Hanley, I'd endure another year of Boner at 3B just so Coghlan/Hanley settle into our middle infield for the next 5 years. It's just that important to lock up our up-the-middle positions (including Maybin), and then building the corners around them.

Actually, Boni plays a better 2B. He just needs to get on base more. And, even tho it is "just" the Winter Leagues, he is working that out a bit better. Gotta add in that we hired Dave Collins as our new OF coach, whose other job with us is to work with certain players on their bunting skills.

According to the latest article on this at marlins.com, Boni is going to get every opportunity to win that 2B starters job in ST. If he dosen't show improvement at the plate, he will be a utility player while working on plate dicipline. At least this year we have 2 guys who could potentially win that job. Unlike the complete failure last year hoping just one guy could win the 1B job and then failing, causing the problem at 3B.

Right now, that's just the way it is. Of course certain trades could change everything.

How about JJ, Cantu, and Uggla for all their top prospects? :D

They say they are in the market for a 1B and a DH. And since they have one of the best 2B's in the game, I doubt Uggla would be more then a DH there. I bet that package could bring in a haul of Neftali Perez, Derek Holland, Justin Smoak, Max Ramirez, and maybe 3 more B level pitchers.

I wouldnt mind Cantu moving, as long as we have a 1B and a 3B for next year. Morrison, Sanchez, Coughlan at 1B, LF, 3B sounds good to me. On paper atleast.

I feel that Cantu needs to be moved to open up positions for the kids coming up. If Cantu could play a decent 3rd base then ok keep him. I just dont want him at 1st base anymore

Just sayin'...they just lost Gload, there's half the $2 million difference. Sign Uggla for three years at a lower than what his arb would be and he'll play any position you want him to (he's saying 2nd base only because he doesn't want to move to a new position and have it affect his value, he worth more as a 2nd baseman with 30HRs than a third baseman with the same), just give him the security he craves. Again just pie in the sky, then put Uggla at third, Coghlan or Bonifacio at 2nd (you could actually play Bonifacio in OF if you had or wanted to, he's had years of WL experience there). If we're contending at the break great, if not we jettison Uggla with a "good" contract and time at third.

Gee, if it were just that easy. :brigginbounce

Let's just trade everyone.Cantu, Uggla and Johnson.Ross and Nolasco next season, etc etc etc.Gee some of you people have no desire to win.

Well, if they were to get rid of Cantu, Nunez, Anibal, Pinto, and not sign a veteran bench, you can get under $40 million barely.

C John Baker $415,000

1B Logan Morrison $405,000

2B Dan Uggla $7,750,000

3B Gaby Sanchez $405,000

SS Hanley Ramirez $7,000,000

LF Chris Coghlan $410,000

CF Cameron Maybin $405,000

RF Cody Ross $4,200,000

B Emilio Bonifacio $415,000

B Wes Helms $950,000

B Ronny Paulino $900,000

B Brett Carroll $415,000

B “Cheap Bat $405,000

SP Josh Johnson $4,500,000

SP Ricky Nolasco $4,250,000

SP Andrew Miller $2,000,000

SP Chris Volstad $415,000

SP Sean West $415,000

RP Matt Lindstrom $1,650,000

RP Dan Meyer $415,000

RP Rick Vanden Hurk $415,000

RP Hunter Jones/Tank $410,000

RP Tim Wood/Chris Leroux $405,000

$39,780,000

It would be kind of scary as your 6th SP is still RVH, and 7th is Penn if he clears waivers and gets back to AAA, but if the starters hold up the pitching is fine there.

The lineup would be interesting. It's basically competition over 2 starting spots at 1B, and wherever Coghlan/Uggla would not be playing, whether that's 2B, 3B, of LF. You're "cheap bat," would most likely be a 1B/LF too to jump in there.

R Maybin CF

L Coghlan 2B/3B/LF

R Hanley SS

R Uggla 2B/3B

L Baker C

R Ross LF/RF

L Morrison 1B

R G. Sanchez 3B/1B / S Bonifacio 2B/3B / R Carroll LF/RF

Could work? Still like the idea of keeping all 6 starters and going for a better bench and keeping Morrison in AAA, than working it to fit Uggla into the picture though.

Let's just trade everyone.Cantu, Uggla and Johnson.Ross and Nolasco next season, etc etc etc.Gee some of you people have no desire to win.

I think most people want

1 - Sign Johnson for 4 years

2 - Trade Uggla for as much pitching as you can get right now, move Coghlan to 2B

3 - If we aren't a contender in 2010, trade Cantu, Ross, Nunez, and maybe a SP at the deadline to load up for 2011

4 - Keep Nolasco through arbitration and let him walk for Type A compensation after 2011

And then you just cross your fingers Maybin, G. Sanchez, Coghlan, West, Volstad, A. Miller, Meyer, Vanden Hurk, etc all work out and become contributers while we wait for Morrison, Stanton, and Dominguez.

JJ & Cantu for Perez, Smoak & Holland?

That would be a stupid move to make if they have already offered Smoak and Feliz (their two best prospects) for JJ alone (which I feel is still not enough).

You cannot trade Uggla, JJ and Cantu. If you can trade one (JJ) or two (Uggla/Cantu) of them for Smoak and company it is an acceptable deal.

Let's just trade everyone.Cantu, Uggla and Johnson.Ross and Nolasco next season, etc etc etc.Gee some of you people have no desire to win.

forgive me if this sounds rude, but........

have you ever had a thought that you didn't immediately type out and hit "post reply"????

Looks like Cantu rumors should be dead now that Lowell was traded for Max Ramirez.
