The Rays have until Friday to put him on the roster. If they don't he can opt out of his contract as soon as tomorrow. Seeing we need a left handed bad and we were the other team intrested what are the chances that he comes here if he opts out? I think it's pretty likely he opts out unless they decide to let Burrell go. Thoughts?

While there were press reports the Marlins were interested when asked why he chose Tampa Bay his answer was, "Because they were the only ones interested in me."

Speaking of guys like this...whatever happened to Jermaine Dye?

Still unsigned according to MLBTR.

Right now the biggest problem with picking anyone up is managing the 40 man roster and since we're already short a spot or two (because we have so many non-roster invitees making the team) adding anyone else from the outside really becomes problematic.

I would guess the only guy they would look to further complicate things with would be if there was a reliever in which they had a high degree of confidence that becomes available.

Which is why this team's confidence in guys like Brian Barden and Jose Veras is so confusing. They have to make room on the 40 man for them and they don't really project to be all that great.

Having Bonifacio on the team makes our insistence on adding another utility infielder really frustrating. It's completely redundant and just makes you wonder what Bonifacio's role will be.

Fredi seems to be insistent that it will be as a utility infielder and not a starter. In the article about Cody's injury, they said Fredi jokingly called Bonifacio starting in the OF in his place "Plan C".

I have a feeling it's not Fredi's decision. The front office is making these decisions and Fredi is just going along.

Well, based on Fredi's quotes, if Bonifacio does indeed find his way to a recurring starting role, you can feel quite sure that is indeed the FO's doing and NOT Fredi's.

I've also considered it to be the front office making those decisions but Gonzalez acting more like a mouthpiece for them.

Same.

It's funny you mention this, since they were just discussing this today on XM Radio. It sounds like he doesn't want to play for peanuts. But at this point he really needs to get himself on a roster if he wants to play.

If Jermaine Dye seriously is still unsigned then thats a damn shame. ITs pretty pathetic to see guys who have never done anything get pretty solid deals and this guy continues to hit and doesnt even get signed before the start of the regular season? Hopefully for him he gets a good deal by a good team during the season because I think guys like this are just the type of player I like. Quiet and productive. Theres not enough guys like him.

it's his fault. hes a good hitter but a terrible fielder and wants to make tons of money. these teams aren't going to shell out that kinda money for him and he's letting his pride get in the way

Blalock To Assess Major League Options

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [April 2, 2010 at 1:54pm CST]

Reid Brignac made the Rays' Opening Day roster, according to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times (via Twitter) and that leaves Hank Blalock as the odd man out. Topkin says Blalock will now assess his major league options.

Blalock can opt out of his deal with the Rays if he's not on the major league roster. Earlier in the week, Blalock said he's not interested in playing minor league baseball at this point in his career, so it appears as though his stint with the Rays is over.

PER MLBTR

i still think blalock be a better option than lamb as a lefty off the bench

Blalock To Accept Minor League Assignment

By Zach Links [April 4 at 5:49pm CST] Hank Blalock will report to the Rays' Triple-A affiliate in Durham, according to the Tampa Bay Tribune (via Twitter). Marc Topkin of The St. Petersburg Times tweets that this means the 29-year-old was unable to find a major league job elsewhere.

Late last week, Reid Brignac made Tampa Bay's Opening Day roster, leaving Blalock as the odd man out.
