April 3, 201016 yr Miami Herald JACKSONVILLE -- The Marlins dropped a 4-3 decision to their Double A affiliate the Jacksonville Suns Friday night but might have lost something much bigger in the process -- right-handed relief pitcher Brian Sanches. The 30-year old suffered what manager Fredi Gonzalez described as a "severe" hamstring injury when he came out to warm-up on the mound in the seventh inning. "The top of my hamstring kind of grabbed on me," said Sanches, who said he was on his second-to-last warm up pitch he sustained the injury. "I felt it kind of pop a little bit. I went to kind of throw another one and it wouldn't let me do it. "I don't have a lot of experience [with hamstring injuries]. But when it rolls like that or pops like that, it's definitely something to worry about. Hamstrings are kind of nagging like that anyway. If it ends up being a strain, it will take 10 days to heal. There's no good time. But this is a really bad time." Sanches went 4-2 with a 2.56 ERA in 47 games last season after being called up from the minors and proved to be a valuable addition to the staff. He said he would be reevaluated Saturday morning after the Marlins arrived in Greensboro, N.C. for the final exhibition game before heading to New York for Monday night's season opener. "We'll check to see how bad it is tomorrow, but it was up in the buttocks area," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Usually when it is high or up, it's more severe -- or can be more severe than when it is in the middle of the hamstring or lower." http://miamiherald.typepad.com/fish_bytes/2010/04/reliever-brian-sanches-suffers-severe-hamstring-injury.html
April 3, 201016 yr Next we'll hear Hanley trips over a rock and breaks his leg. Note to self: Don't schedule any more games against the Suns
April 3, 201016 yr By the sounds of it def headed to DL... Tim Wood or Rick Vandenhurk will take his spot
April 3, 201016 yr We freaking make it through all the real ST games with out any bad injures and now 2 guys get hurt. At least Uggla should be fine. Wonder who comes up RVH or Wood?
April 3, 201016 yr It's gotta be Wood. 1. Wood had a great Spring Training, and did well when called up, last year. 2. Would be nice if VandenHurk continued getting STARTS in the minors, to see if he can still develop into a quality starter. With that said, the Marlins have been making decisions lately that I don't agree with, so you never know, I guess.

April 3, 201016 yr I would generally agree with Tim Wood as Sanches' replacement but two others immediately come to mind - one still in the organization and one on the outs and as of right now with another team. As I said, putting Wood aside, the Marlins have to be looking at bringing Scott Strickland back into the fold and getting back onto the field before his spring conditioning is completely wasted. In theory he is still in minor league camp and thus should be still working out but assuming there's a chance that's not the case (our personal "repo man"), I would find a way to get him ready for if not the first game at least the by the end of that first series in New York. The second guy is Joe Nelson who just lost his spot on the major league roster to Scott Schoenweiss and is headed to Pawtucket (AAA) on a contract that keeps him from declaring his free agency until June 1. Now Nelson and the Marlins did not part ways on good terms but Joe seems to generally rub teams the wrong way with his mouth (not his work) and his behavior at the 2008 Winter Meetings really left a bad taste collectively with some Marlins' executives . Joe did not have a season in 2009 like he did in 2008 to be sure but in the bigger picture it was not a bad season although it did have a low point or two and as i said the marlins really would have to think long and hard whether they want him back for both on-field and off-field reasons BUT THAT SAID Joe Nelson and his "Vulcan" pitch does one thing most relievers aren't able to do - Joe gets outs both lefties and righties out with alacrity. Even last season lefties hit only .211 against him, righties .216, with 36 strikeouts in 40 innings all in the American League (meaning the DH). This spring he threw to a 3.38 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. Getting Nelson would have to involve a trade with the Sox but I suspect that would not be that difficult to make happen if the will was there on the Marlins part. This is a situation where the old saying, "better the devil you know that the Devil you don't...", truly applies. Just an idea. I can list all the reasons not to do it but if Sanches is going to be out as long as I suspect he will be I can think of a lot worse options than Joe Nelson, warts and all.

If it's not him, the FO hates him.
