We need a new manager or big lineup change

Interesting rumor: If the Dodgers financial woes continue due to the owners' divorce, Joe Torre wants out (as per rumor)

Yankees, Dodgers, Marlins

Just wishful thinking is all... I'd like to think we start putting a great team together (players and staff) the year before the new stadium opens to generate momentum going into 2012 and beyond

Maybin doesn't suck.

Right now, he's not looking like anything more than backup material. Quite Hermida-esque in the way he's started his career.

Cabrera was brought up at 20 and never failed. Look at Mr.Jason in ATL.

And for every one of those guys, there's a Jeremy Hermida, Todd Van Poppel, Karim Garcia, etc. Sure, Stanton is a better prospect than a lot of those guys but still, it works both ways. He needs a look in AAA first and should have started getting said look a few weeks ago. Not sure what we're waiting for there.

Grrrr at Van Poppel, I had a ton of his '91 Upper Deck rookie cards

He hasn't been very good, but he doesn't suck.

He's the Phil Jackson of MLB. Hugely overrated. He had a losing career record before he came to the Yankees.

As much as I am not a fan of Fredi, I think I'd rather see a shake-up of the offense first... It's too inconsistent, too all-or-nothing, not enough situational or unselfish hitting (how many times do we see a lead-off runner on 2nd stranded because no one moves runners over?)... The queston is: how? Bring up Stanton in June? Trades? Before the new stadium opens, I expect we'll have a new-look offense anyway, but what do we do in the meantime? Cantu, Uggla, Ross, etc do put up numbers but is it a good combination?

The all or nothing approach of the offense is the mentality that is instilled in the players by Jim Pressley. Normally I think coaches aren't too relevant, but its been said several times by the Marlins broadcasters how the coaches have encouraged them to be more "aggressive" . All it really accomplishes is being impatient, swinging at bad pitches, and letting the opposing pitcher go deeper into games.

Sometimes I find myself yelling, "Work the count, take some pitches" at the screen

Fredi is likely gone after this year to take Cox's place at Atlanta.

I wouldnt be shocked if Manny Acta is one and done in Cleveland and is managing the Fish next year.

Exactly how do you see Fredi being gone? Fired? He can't just up and leave here for Atlanta on his own. He is signed through 2011.

He just got tons of praise for handling the Hanley situation. Some even have him as the early fav for MOY. Of course by the end of the season things could change as memories tend to be very short. So I suppose by October if there is a total collapse a firing would be concievable.

I'm going to repeat myself. Finish last off-season's house cleaning. Fire Presley.

I can live with that

Managers leave before their contracts are up all the time. They arent hard deals like player contracts, and Fredi isnt exactly bringing in big money.

When was the last time a manager left a team while under contract without being fired?

Lou Pinella did, although that was some time ago.

Didn't Leyland and McKeon do it?

No, Jack was on 1-year contracts all 3 years he was here.

Jim was able to leave because the team was sold per his contract (he also got a $500,000 buyout). He also left the Rockies but he did so by retiring.

Sweet Lou did it as well as Sirspud mentioned but he also was bought out of his contract. I know we aren't going to pay Fredi to go manage the Braves.

The team is just one game over .500. The front office (fair or not) thinks this is a playoff team. One game over .500 is ok, but it's also a mini losing streak away from Fredi being on "the hot seat." The Hanley situation isn't going to help him either; it's only going to hurt him. The front office is saying that now, but at the end of the day, Hanley's the star player that they're paying the big bucks to. So if the team starts losing for any reason, they'll just use Hanley having multiple problems in the past with Fredi as another reason to fire Fredi, in the future. I don't think Fredi Gonzalez will be here next year, either, to be honest.

I agree. I am hoping that next year we start to see most of the pieces that will be in place when our play-off bound Marlins take the field in 2012....not just the players, but the coaching staff as well

Yes they do. But they can't just go to another team and start managing them. A team may let them out of their contract, but that's the only way it can happen under those circumstances. And then the team can say they will void the current contract but the manager can't go to , say, a team in the same division for what would be the remainder of the original contract. If a manager no longer wants to remain with the team then it is obviously in the best interests of the org to release him, under certain restrictions. But it would also send out the "wrong" message for that manager to other teams down the road when they are looking for a new manager. Of course a trade is another option. Or him being outright fired.

BTW A contract is a contract. Period. If it were different then the Marlins wouldn't have been responsible for GI Joe's salary the year after he was fired from here and did his little thing in broadcasting before taking the Yankees job. And the amount of $$$ involved is not an issue. That should not even have been brought up.

Didn't Leyland and McKeon do it?

Yep. Buying him out is one way of voiding the contract. And retiring is another. But even then, he can't retire one day and then go manage another team the next. The original contract would have to be fulfilled in it's length, or the original team would have to give it's okay, before that can happen. Leyland did that by being a scout for the Cards(?) for few years.

BTW Jack was on one year contracts because he knew he wasn't going to want to manage long term. I think he actually stayed here for the 3rd year out of a feeling of loyalty. Probably why he's still here. The second year was to defend the Championship and manage the ASG.

Apparently you are the only one that thinks that. His handling of that situation raised his stock as a manager in the eyes of everyone in MLB. Saying they are all just BS'ing it is just making up "facts" to support a theory.

If we aren not competetive enough to make an honest stab at the play offs then I would say he won't be the manager by the end of this season. Managers are fired all the time for what the owners consider underperforming. Loria truely believes this is a play off team. Not playing October baseball would be underperforming in his eyes.

When a manager and the star player don't get along, ownership normally takes the star players' side, at the end of the day. That's what I meant. In my opinion, Fredi's under more pressure to win now, than he was before the incident. For what it's worth, I do think that Fredi did the right thing, as well. But the sport is a business, and in order for the business to succeed, ownership will do what it takes to make their star player happy, especially since they've already signed him to a long-term deal.

I don't think you guys are analyzing the Hanley thing in relation to Fredi. This thing wasn't a manager and player not seeing eye to eye situation. Hanley created the entire situation first by the lollygag, and then acerbated it by his public comments. This was all on Hanley and a moment of immaturity. I think Fredi came out of that whole situation looking a lot better than before, and if you think that a guy as cheap as Loria is going to spend $60 million on a guy and accept him dogging it, think again.
