Baltimore Sun says Lee deal closer

Featured Replies

"...Palmeiro, 39, has slugged at least 38 home runs in each of the past nine seasons. The Orioles would prefer to add younger players -and there were indications Tuesday that they may have moved closer to a deal for Florida Marlins first baseman Derrek Lee - but Palmeiro has surfaced as another option at designated hitter.

Flanagan would not give specifics, but he did say, "We have some other irons in the fire."

What's unsaid here is that Raffy is rounded disliked by fans in Baltimore if their messageboard postings are any indication and the sense is this posturing while trying to get Lee. He makes some sense there, but only as a DH, they don;t see him playing first.

From rotoworld:

Anthony Gargano of WIP 610 in Philadelphia is reporting that the Phillies could complete a trade for Curt Schilling before the end of the week.

Two possibilities are being mentioned. One has Cole Hamels and Chase Utley going to Arizona in return for Schilling. The other possibility is a three-team trade which includes the Marlins. The Diamondbacks would get Derrek Lee from Florida and Josh Hancock from Philadelphia. The Phillies would also send Utley and Ryan Howard to Florida and get Schilling back.

A trade with the O's for Lee is a solid move. Especially if we can net Riley and Roberts in the deal, maybe even Ryan. I am curious as to who is involved in this rumor...

yuck. Palmeiro is so old and had an awful 2003 season (compared to his career avgs) and shouldn't hurt us too much in trade negotiations.

If Denny isn't part of a package, no deal.

We already spoke ;)

I'd like to get Denny, Ryan and Roberts. Roberts would give us another middle infield option, Ryan gives us a lefty out of the pen to replace Tejera or Almanza, and we get back a top pitching prospect.

Hmm...that three team deal with us looks pretty interesting. I am not familiar with Utley - anyone know about him?

Play soild last year after being called up

7. Chase Utley, 3B

HT: 6-1 WT: 170 Bats: L Throws: R 2003 AGE: 25 on 12/17/03

The Skinny: Utley was given quite a challenge in 2002 -- not only did he skip AA and go straight from Clearwater to the AAA International League, but he moved to the hot corner after spending the first two seasons of his pro career at second base. He responded by establishing career highs in numerous offensive categories and leading the International League with 39 doubles. Utley has a classic left-handed swing with gap power to all fields. He still needs to be more patient at the plate, but has shown improvement -- tightening up his strike zone and drawing a career high 46 walks in 2002. Defensively he has yet to find a position. He made 28 errors at third in 2002, and may not have the arm to play there in the major leagues. At second base he lacked range and had big problems with his footwork around the bag.

2003 Outlook: The free agent signings of David Bell and Jim Thome effectively block Utley's chance at a major league job in 2003, but a return to 2B (where he struggled with the glove) is not out of the question. He's slated for a return engagement at AAA Scranton-WB.

Rune would know more...

Utley coming over could spell doom for either Mikey or Luiy

But here's the thing: Why didn't they bring Utley up sooner? He was hitting .323 in triple A, with 18 home runs. He made getting three hits last night look as effortless as breathing. As an offensive player, his high-end potential has caused people to drop the name Jeff Kent in comparison. That's pretty good.

A decade ago, the Phillies brought up 23-year-old Kevin Stocker to play shortstop for a first-place team. Stocker hit .324 in 70 games. Utley, who will be 25 in a few months, is older, more experienced, and considered a much better hitter.

The difference is that Stocker was plugged right into a team full of veterans who were playing the best ball of their careers. Utley would have been one more young player for Bowa to worry about, one more psyche to monitor. So Wade waited until the indicators were bad for Bell, and here's Utley.

I have my own point of view on the proposed three-way and that is I'm not in favor of helping either the Diamondbacks or the Phillies, especially the Phillies, in any way. In fact I'd get in the way of any trade of theirs that I could.

I would rather take less (as long as it isn't substantially less) from a Baltimore and ship DLee out of the NL than help two teams we'll be playing next year scores of times.

Old fashioned thinking? Perhaps.

Yesterday it was "maybe the Orioles will sign Palmeiro instead" and today the Fish countered with "maybe we'll do a deal with the D'Backs". I suspect much of this is political and a bunch of guys letting the other guy sneak a peek at their cards.

I believe management will not make deals that make it more difficult for us to compete. Especially not for a couple of maybe majorleaguers. Sure they look good on paper, but I can't imagine a scenario in which anyone from Loria on down would assist in moving Schilling to Philadelphia and Lee to Arizona. What the Marlins need in return is major league ready talent, and cheap to boot. If you're going to do anything move Lee to St Louis where are least they'll beat up on the Cubs all summer. But otherwise, ship Lee to the AL.

Exactly, that is what i have been saying. I am very hesitant to trade our players to a division rival -just to watch them bloom and beat up on us. No thanks, trade out of division. The Expos even employed this tactic - remember last offseason when we dangled everyone for Colon?

I don't know how good of an idea it is to help the Phillies get Schilling back.

Curt Shilling back to Philly?? :confused

And as long as we get some great players, not good but great, then I don't care who it is. They better be great though. :angry

Hmmm.... Utley's an interesting name to throw out there... Might be the solution at 2B if they're going to let Luis go.

I'd like to think that's the case Marlins2003, that the FO doesn't want to help out any teams the Marlins have to compete with, but I'm not sure how sending Lee to Arizona would be any different than sending Preston to Colorado. Even sending Hampton to the Braves one could argue helped a division rival. 'Course Hampton is nowhere near Schilling obviously, & those circumstances were all screwed up anyway with Hampton refusing to play here (jerkoff). Plus it didn't really hurt the Marlins in the long run.

I agree about not wanting to help division rivals, I'm just not sure that the FO does... Let's hope so.

This looks like a good trade...they both have good numbers in the minors and if Jason Stokes comes around we can trade Ryan Howard (who plays 1st) for whatever help we need at that time.
