Roger Clemens will be indicted on charges of making false statements to Congress about his use of performance-enhancing drugs, The New York Times reported, citing two sources briefed on the case.An announcement of the indictment was expected shortly, according to the report.

 

Clemens and his former trainer, Brian McNamee, testified under oath before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in 2008. McNamee, who cooperated with federal authorities and with baseball's Mitchell report on performance-enhancing drugs in baseball, said Clemens had used steroids, while Clemens flatly denied having ever used them.

 

A few weeks later, the FBI opened a perjury probe against Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner. The federal grand jury began hearing testimony more than 18 months ago.

 

Rusty Hardin, Clemens' lead attorney, said he was unaware of a pending indictment.

 

"We've heard nothing," Hardin said by telephone from Houston, "so I can't knowledgeably respond at all."

 

Earl Ward, one of McNamee's lawyers, said he, too, "had no indication something was coming."

 

McNamee, a one-time New York City cop and former close friend of Clemens, said in the Mitchell report that he injected the 354-game winner with steroids and HGH at least 16 times in 1998, 2000 and 2001. He repeated the claim under oath before Congress, but Clemens, also under oath, adamantly denied the allegations.

 

Some of McNamee's evidence is believed to include bloody gauze, vials and needles that he claims contained steroids and Clemens' DNA. McNamee kept the decade-old evidence in a FedEx box at his New York home and handed it over to investigators after the probe began.

 

Clemens sued McNamee for defamation, but a federal judge in Texas dismisseed most of Clemens' claims against McNamee last year. Earlier this month, a federal appeals court affirmed the decision,.

 

McNamee has filed a defamation suit against Clemens in federal court in New York.

I don't think this is really a "smiley face" kind of moment. Clemens is kind of a jerk, but he was a Hall of Fame caliber player who cheated the game and is an even bigger douche lying about cheating the game.

 

Just like Bonds, I don't think they have enough evidence against Clemens to actually find him guilty of perjury.

 

However, it is 100% now that Roger Clemens will never be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Once eligible, he'll probably receive around 25% of the writers votes, similar to what McGwire is getting.

I've hated Clemens' guts for a long time, so I have little to no sympathy for him.

Ever since the Mitchell report came out and Clemens was the FIRST one to deny it, I believed he had taken them. I can understand defending yourself calmly, but in my eyes, the fact that he was the first one to deny it, and not just that, being overly defensive and what not, proved him guilty. Just in my opinion, really.

I've learned to deal with steroid use, but Clemens has denied it all this time when we all know he did it. The way he has handled it, I don't think it would be right to put Roger Clemens in the Hall of Fame.

 

He was a great player with or without steroids, but he is just one of the many faces of an era many want to forget. To put somebody who symbolizes all that is wrong with the sport in a place with some of the great players and great baseball humanitarians/people just isn't right.

 

I did say A-Rod is a Hall of Fame player and should be in the Hall of Fame even though he took steroids, but he has been upfront about a lot of what he has done. He has talked about how he has put that behind him and wants to bring a better light upon himself and upon the sport. A-Rod is exactly what all these players of the steroid era should be doing right now instead of hiding. He is doing what we hoped the wrongdoers would do, and thus the sport can move on.

 

Clemens has done nothing but deny and just continue to allow the topic of steroid use to continue to be brought up. Clemens has brought nothing good to the sport in recent years, has not admitted to past faults, and thus doesn't not belong in a place where the best and brightest shine.

Nope.

I have no idea why Pete Rose is still banned from the Hall of Fame either. No proof he ever bet against his team, and all indications point to him only betting for his team.

 

Plus, I don't think anybody has ever set a major league record in career hits by throwing baseball games. As a manager I think it's also been clear that whenever he bet on games he managed, he's always bet for his own team.

 

Rose is an idiot and could've made things a lot simpler had he never lied for 30 years, but he's still a Hall of Fame player. Lying about gambling on your own team to win is a lot different than lying about steroid use.

Clemens brought all of this on himself. He didn't have to go in front of Congress, but asked to do it. His complete and utter arrogance extended that far. He felt he would just appear before Congress and they would massage his ego, just as all the yes men that have surrounded him since he was in High School. They have told him he was better than everyone else, he was a "God amongst mortals" when he threw a baseball, and that he, Roger Clemens could do no wrong.

 

As for evidence, I think when you bring witness, after witness, after witness to the courtroom, and all of them say "Roger did it" its very, very compelling. Remember Jose Canseco was mentioned in the Mitchell Report over 100 times, but who was the 2nd most mentioned name in that report at 82 times ? There are many, many witnesses, there is the "syringe" evidence, but the single most compelling thing that will happen in that courtroom will be when the prosecution brings up Andy Petitte to testify against Clemens, and say "yes Roger and I talked about steroids", which is something, under oath in front of Congress he said "Petitte misremembers". That jury will be left to believe either Clemens or Petitte. Who has more credibility ? I believe that unless Clemens tells his lawyer to try to discredit Petitte on the stand, and completely destroy their friendship forever, this will be the one part of the trial (if it comes to pass) that will be the charge that does stand, and will send Clemens to prison for 12-18 months.

 

These charges and this possible trial are not about Clemens taking steroids or HGH, but its about his making and restating over and over statements he knows are falsehoods. You cannot lie to Congress and that is the bottom line.
