Posted November 21, 201014 yr I hate to bring light to this but it upsets me that the Miami Herald is so ignorant about topics like this... why do I feel like we on these boards are the only Marlins fans with any knowledge about these subjects? Anyways... today's sports page, page 3D, in the middle of the page they list what South Florida sports fans are talking about this week...and #4 is the Fish trading Uggla: "Unwilling to spend $ to keep him, Florida dealt its popular HR leader..." How can Greg Cote be so ignorant about this??? How does crap like this be allowed to be printed? This is what maintains the stupid "cheap" stereotype that the Marlins have in our community and throught the majors as well. Its upsets me how crap so wrong can still be printed among the media! Uggla himself admitted that the Fish offered him $48 million but he REFUSED less than the asinine $71 million that he wanted! Why are we STILL blaming the Marlins from a financial sense??? And then, in the same section, they jokingly predict Hanley gets traded to the Phillies for a few cheesesteaks... Don't get me wrong, I understand this is considered a joke... but I'm not reading the sports page for the comics section's humor. Go ahead and tell the public that Hanley is about to be traded and watch how seriously they take it and completely ignore Hanley's longterm contract and the franchise's commitment to possibly have Hanley RETIRE as a Marlin. And lastly, the same page has a little blurb complaining that the Marlins traded Maybin and Miller. Instead of complaining about the Cabrera trade being a bust, realize that both Maybin and Miller had three years here where they amounted to NOTHING and that they were traded for bullpen help, a serious need on this team. Yeah, the Cabrera trade was a bust in hindsight, but if our bullpen makes us a playoff team next season, then the ends justify the means. Did the Herald want us to keep Maybin and Miller just because they came here for Miggy? I don't care how they got here, THEY were the bust of the trade and it was time for them to go. Good lord I need a drink
November 21, 201014 yr One of you guys should call up LeBatard's show when Cote is on (if they still do that), or at least write Dan an e-mail ripping Cote. He'll probably read it.
November 21, 201014 yr Author One of you guys should call up LeBatard's show when Cote is on (if they still do that), or at least write Dan an e-mail ripping Cote. He'll probably read it. Maybe we just need to send him links to the articles proving that Uggla refused 48 and asked for 71. Thats what I dont get, why do newspaper writers ignore facts when they're clear as day? Thats not what I was taught that the news was supposed to be.
November 21, 201014 yr Greg Cotex knows as much about basebal as a 5 y/o born and raised in Siberia The Herald has always been horrible in its sports coverage outside the Dolphins I don't know if they gotten better on their coverage of the Heat since it's become the new trend The Herald is probably the worse sports coverage you can get from a major newspaper of a major city with probably exception to my misfortune of the Orlando Sentinel, so I could care less what the Herald writes about
November 21, 201014 yr Author Because Cote's column is titiled "Random Thoughts of a cluttered mind". Then there should be a disclaimer that all of it is false BS. And I almost couldn't care less about their BS coverage except that they're what the uneducated sports fan goes by. And thus, its there crap that feeds the mind of the people at my job, and my friends and their friends, who all want to argue with me telling me that the Marlins lost Uggla for being cheap. I hate that I have to defend my team so damn much and it'd be nice if the media knew the facts so I wouldn't have to defend over them. Plus, with the media spreading such crap, sometimes I'm the one who looks like a liar making excuses for my team. The casual fan will believe the newspaper before they believe me, or any of us on here, and thats horribly wrong. My aunt always gives me this "ohh here he goes again" look and it pisses me off when I know I'm right about certain facts.
November 21, 201014 yr They trend to echo the stupid popular opinion. Wait until this team makes it to the playoffs again and watch how much they love this team.
November 22, 201014 yr Cote's email is on there. I'll say that the Marlins were unwilling to negotiate. The owners always tell the players that it's a business right? I'm not sure it's fair to say that Maybin is a bust, I think he's going to be good in this league but he's the type of player who needs to be allowed to play every day and be surrounded with some veterans because he's too raw.

The Marlins were unwilling to negotiate beyond their FAIR offer of $48 million and unwilling to negotiate into Uggla's asinine dream of $71 million... that doesn't mean the Marlins we're being cheap. They were being wise about how they spend their money. Really though, my point on the whole thing is, we are all preaching to the choir on these boards. Its everyone beyond these boards who are often clueless.
November 22, 201014 yr We want things to change for the Marlins. 2012 we get a new stadium finally. We want the attendance issue to just go away already....basically we want the image of the Marlins to change for the better in the eyes of baseball fans in Florida. However we're a long way from that. Getting a new stadium is a start. Building a better team that can make it to the playoffs is a start. But what needs to change also is the way the Marlins are reflected in the media. It's worse enough with the national media, but what about our local media? Stuff like this is what hurts the Marlins. For those who are not informed will read that and say "there ya go..the Marlins doing it again. Getting rid of my favorite players because they're cheap.." when they don't even know the real story.

It's said that Loria was "insulted" that Uggla turned down the offer. You can't get insulted in business, right?

If he turned down 4/$48 MM, I doubt he would have accepted a 5th year for only $7MM more. I think that would have been too much for him, anyway.

Exactly, its the media's job to correctly inform the community and they're once again failing to do so. If they (the media) can't help us fix the image of the Marlins (especially when the facts are clearly in front of their faces like in the Uggla situation)... then the image of the Marlins will never be fixed. And then us educated Marlin fans will be looked upon as being falsely informed and making excuses for our team.
November 22, 201014 yr Frisaro's mailbag today was actually spot on. He clearly stated that this was NOT a salary dump. Props to him for that.
November 22, 201014 yr the legendary Tracey Ringolsby ridicules the Marlins yet again. Good 'Ol TR should keep his opinions to himself and his cowboy hat. Luckily, given his media market placement and size, he generally does even when talking aloud.

Luckily, given his media market placement and size, he generally does even when talking aloud. Glad to see I'm not the only one who dislikes him. There seems to be this inferiority complex that he, as a Rockies guy, has towards the Marlins.
