July 29, 201115 yr If anything, we should trade Coghlan, not Sanchez. I know MOrrison sucks in LF, but he can learn to get better.
July 29, 201115 yr I wouldn't mind trading Gaby and Coghlan. Both. Some aren't taking into consideration that these players aren't irreplaceable; if you can get better, everything should be considered.

Some aren't taking into consideration that these players aren't irreplaceable; if you can get better, everything should be considered. I wouldn't mind trading anyone. It depends on what they bring in return. However, Gaby's bat (OPS+ about 120) is not easy to replace.
July 29, 201115 yr If Gaby gets traded and you put Logan Morrison at 1B, you just replaced that bat and probably have more upside at the position, all things considered. A productive LF'er isn't difficult to find. Actually, a productive 1B isn't difficult to find, either. There's also that question of whether or not Gaby can sustain his numbers. He never projected as a great bat considering the position, but he had a great first two months of the season. Since then, he had a horrible month of June and a non-spectacular month of July. His value might never be higher than it currently is.
July 29, 201115 yr One bad month and a current month that screams meh, considering he's a 1B. And it's definitely a concern considering what he did last year. Last year, he had a very nice first half only to finish it off with a terrible second half, which led to an overall result of mediocre offensive #'s. My point is that he has to prove that he can sustain the numbers for a full year. We have to improve other areas of the team; if another team sees him as a cheap, controllable bat that they need, I wouldn't mind acquiring some cheap, controllable pitching for him. You have to give to get.
July 29, 201115 yr I said from the day Morrison got called up that we are going to have to trade Gaby at some point, considering LoMo doesn't belong in LF, he's a 1st baseman. Considering age and upside, Morrison is the better long term bet. However, this trade deadline doesn't seem like the opportune time to think of a Sanchez trade.

Maybe because he really does suck out there. I also hate the way he plays the OF, as well. He's so aggressive running into walls that I'm afraid he's going to get injured one day; his bat is too valuable for something stupid like that to happen.

I never said to trade any of these guys now. I think it's foolish to trade Coghlan now, too. Who are the other trading options we have? It's Leo Nunez and that's it. And they're not even considering a Leo Nunez trade, apparently. Overvaluing a pricy, replaceable bullpen arm. Sigh.
July 29, 201115 yr @JoeFrisario: #Marlins #MLB #traderumors barring some late developing deal, looks like Marlins won't be dealing before deadline 5 hours ago
July 29, 201115 yr Gaby Sanchez is a 1B, so .850 OPS is perfectly average. Gaby Sanchez is 27 years old, and batters typically peak between 25 and 28. Gaby Sanchez already shows maturity and discipline at the plate so that will not expand his game. Morrison is already comparable, much younger and should improve in all aspects of his game for 4-5 more years. Coghlan is unlikely to stay healthy in CF, healthy Coghlan is a pretty decent hitter and unlike Sanchez, he can play LF.

July 29, 201115 yr It was mentioned that several teams asked about Leo Nunez and the Marlins told them he was NOT available. Interesting... I thought they would pull the trigger on him. Probably getting nothing in return.

Saying we should get rid of Gaby for Coghlan's sake is beyond ridiculous.
July 30, 201115 yr You don't trade Gaby to make room for Morrison, because there is already room for Morrison. You trade Gaby if you can get a comparably valuable LF making the minimum. Considering Gaby is currently 13th in the NL in WAR, that's not happening. This is the best possible configuration the Marlins can put on the field, unless you think Gaby can be better at 3B than Lomo is at LF and Lomo can be not worse than Gaby at 1B. I think that's unlikely, all things considered.

I think that's unlikely, all things considered. I don't think that's overly difficult. I also don't think that Gaby projects to be 13th in the NL in WAR on a consistent basis. Edit: He's also tied for 18th, not 13th. At least according to fangraphs.
July 30, 201115 yr 13th on BR. So he's a top 20 player in the NL right now. Is that more than we should expect from him? Possibly. But what is he doing that is unrealistic? The BB rate? BABIP? K rate? Power? I don't think there's anything that we should really expect a regression on. This guy's proving to not be replaceable, especially when he's making the minimum. And if it's not overly difficult, find me someone for the price we're paying Gaby who is readily availalble this offseason to play LF who will replace his production. You can have some seasons where everything clicks, and be a 4 WAR player on that particular season. Coco Crisp, as non-spectacular as it might sound, has been a 4 WAR player in the past. He's been a 5 WAR player in the past. And I'm guessing that's the case with some other players on that list, as well. This is what I see from Gaby Sanchez. He's a nice player, but I don't necessarily think he's a 4 WAR player, year-in/year-out. He's having a good year, defensively. His offense was fantastic the first two months, and has been trending downward the past two months. I have to wait until someone actually finishes a complete season of 4 WAR baseball before I even consider calling him that. Also, the current way doesn't exactly get you max value out of Logan Morrison. As cool as his bat is, Logan Morrison is a 1 WAR player currently because his defense in LF sucks so bad. Basically, you got Gaby at a 3-4 WAR right now, and LoMo at 1. That situation can't become better?
July 30, 201115 yr At the rates they are going, over a full season Gaby would be somewhere around a 4.5 and Lomo would be close to a 2 with room for improvement. Maybe Gaby is playing over his head. I just don't see a specific skill of his that is due for regression right now. I think this is realistically who he is, more or less. Players have bad months. That he's had one bad month and one OK month and two good months doesn't mean that his overall season line is flukey. It means his production has fluctuated, which happens to everyone. What specifically about Gaby's season line do you think is out of whack?
July 30, 201115 yr I'm not sure if Gaby projects to be this good defensively every year, considering most scouting reports basically had him as an average 1B, and that's what he proved to be last year. Could he have gotten better with Perry Hill? Certainly, but I don't know if it's a long-term thing with this year's defensive #'s. There's also that question of what Gaby's power will be. 1B is a position of offense, and Gaby seems to be a .175-.180 .ISO guy. I'm impressed with Morrison only being 23 and upping his power to a .220ish .ISO this year. I also believe he will go back to walking more because it's something that he's always done, and his defense at 1B is likely to be better than the awfulness in LF so he could be the complete package. By the way, you might not get a 4 WAR player out of one of those players next year, but it's possible to get something similar to Gaby's production if you platoon two of them. Or just get a right-handed hitter to platoon with Coghlan in LF. Coghlan's #'s against righties have been just fine this year. Of course, this all depends on the return we could potentially get for Gaby. I'm not saying to trade Gaby for the sake of trading him.
July 30, 201115 yr f*** LF. We move him to get a legit CF and some pitching that may pan out. Just because he is cheap is not a reason to keep him.
