Marlins Trade Deadline Thread

Well, yes. It is.

Because you can then spend money to get another position of need. That's why cheap guys are valuable.

All the guy has done has been a rock in our lineup for two years now and improved every facet of his game imaginable to the point where I don't know how anyone could truly question him in any way.

If you're nit picking monthly splits, Erick, he has one month of a .712 OPS this month and has been .800 or better every other month in a league where the average 1B hits .787. He's been an average 1B in one month, below average in one, and well above in two others. Last season, he was above average in 3 months and below in 3 months. He was a rookie. It's reasonable to expect that he would improve, and you still have yet to show any specific skill where you would expect regression except maybe defense.

Yeah, 1B is a power position, and Gaby probably tops out at about a .200 ISO with his average between .175 and .180 like you said. Average ISO for a 1B last year was .190. This year, it's .176. So average power for his position.

If the worst thing you can say about him is that, given his excellent plate discipline, ability to avoid strikeouts, and what at this point has to be considered no worse than average defense going forward, he's only got average power for the 1B position, I don't think you really have a criticism of him.

Will he be an elite 1B? You want to say "no," but he already is right now. He's been the 2nd most valuable 1B in the NL this year, and the 6th best offensively by wOBA. And it's decidedly non-flukey, given his minor league track record and track record thus far. Nothing is out of whack. He's made small improvements in almost everything he does and it's resulted in him becoming one of our best players.

Trading a guy entering his prime years with 4 years of club control left because he's "blocking" a guy who is currently not as good as him would be a mistake. It's not like he's got a bloated contract or huge RBI numbers that will drive his arbitration price up in a big way. He's going to be affordable and more than solid for a while. No, he's not a guy you give a 6 year deal to, but you absolutely keep him through arbitration and take those peak years at a steep discount. And for this team, competing for the next 4 years is more important than anything else.

Other defensive systems agree, and I don't see how anyone who watches him could say he hasn't played a fine 1B.

Though I can think of people who may disagree on principle alone.

He has really improved his defense since he became a starter. And I think whether or not that has to do with Perry being the major contributing factor because of his "positioning is better than range" idea of doing things is irrelevant at this point. But LoMo was projected to be a GG caliber 1B and I sure would like to see him over there with Perry's teachings.

That said, I don't believe we will see anything happen until the off season. Last year most were pretty sure Gaby woulkd be traded. Right up until Uggla showed he didn't want to be here any more. Then it was pretty much conceded that we couldn't afford to lose that many bats and unless something extrordinary happened, Gaby would remain a Marlin. It may be along the same lines this off season. Alot of names have been mentioned as to who would be viable trade options (meaning this off season) and could maybe even be packaged to be more tempting to other teams. Add Baker to that list.

I do not think "most" people thought Gaby would be traded. I think a few people thought Gaby would be traded, but it wasn't anything close to a majority.

And the decision to not trade Gaby Sanchez had nothing to do with Dan Uggla. I do not think a decision was ever even made about trading Gaby Sanchez. I dont think it was ever discussed

I don't even remember any discussion in any publications about that? Can anyone provide any links?

Okay. Maybe I exaggerated that a bit. Swap out "most" with "some". That better? But it was discussed back then.

I remember some discussion about him being included in trades for Justin Upton, but that's not a situation where we were looking to get rid of Gaby, that was a situation where you're trading him as a package to get a phenomenal player. That's nothing to do with Gaby and everything to do with the guy we hoped to acquire. Nobody was saying it was an offseason goal to trade Gaby.

I don't think there's any indication at all that the front office ever considered trading Gaby. And I certainly don't remember anything at all regarding Uggla affecting Gaby's future. I have no idea where that came from.

I'd be beyond shocked if he's moved.

I said nothing about what the front office was thinking. I was refering to speculation on the board. Just like you were talking about with the JU talk. Unless you can show where the FO was considering that move.

I think some of us expect every player to play gold glove defense and bat .350 consistently. Our Starting outfield and first base at the start of the season had less than two years experience, Cogs the exception but considering how much hes been injured might as well be less two years playing experience in the MLB. Some of these guys are playing new positions for the first time. Add the lack of experience for the league and the new positions in applicable cases, what do you expect really? Negating the slumps at the plate that most of our guys have been on at some point during the season, Gaby in particular is one of our better hitters, since were on the topic of him. This is his second year in the bigs and for the most part you can set him out there and forget about him screwing anything up the vast majority of the time.

The only way I see trading Gaby or any of the other productive young hitters is If we get a comparable or better bat or make a signing because it's not like we have a squad bursting in the wings of minor batting gods at the moment and sorry no I don't consider Scott cousins or Peterson YET! To be considerable and replacement starters for the young squad.

I do not "want" Gabby traded, I like Gabby, but when we look at the make up of the organization, we have a 1B to replace him with, and no CF that is near ready. He is the only truly attractive trade piece that can be replaced.

I would also be shocked if here were moved. I just looked at Anaheim and they would upgrade 1B with Gabby and they have Mike Trout that I would really like to see in whatever colors the Marlins feature next season.

Ouch, Casey Stern just said the worst trade he ever saw was the Dan Uggla trade. Said we traded him out of spite like te Rasmussen trade.

Worst trade he ever saw? That's probably the worst statement I've ever seen.

We didn't trade him out of spite. Would he want to pay 12MM to a powerhitting 2nd baseman in his mid-thirties that will eventually see a sharp drop in his production? Don't think so. I know Uggla has been plagued by a low BABIP this year, but that doesn't matter. Not producing is not producing. Unlucky or not. Omar Infante can probably net us some draft picks this year after we offer him arbitration and he declines. And I see Mike Dunn in our pen for a while, probably as a good setup man or even closer if his walks get cut down.

According to Olney theres a flurry of offers for Nunez, Infante, Nolasco, and Choate but the offers have been weak and the team plans on keeping everyone.

No it wasn't.

The only time this has been discussed has been on these forums for the sake of discussion. I don't recall Gaby's name popping up in actual trade rumors.

The Angels have Trumbo.

And I can't believe you just said that because it would never happen. I hope that was a joke; Mike Trout is the best prospect in baseball.

Mike Trout is Bryce Harper?

Mike Trout is the #2 prospect in baseball. In other words, still never happening.

Ouch, Casey Stern just said the worst trade he ever saw was the Dan Uggla trade. Said we traded him out of spite like te Rasmussen trade.

I think this is pretty funny, because

Dan Uggla WAR .1

Money Remaining on Contract - $50+ million

Omar Infante WAR .9

Mike Dunn WAR - .1

Total WAR - .8

Money Remaining - Mike Dunn club controlled 2 seasons, 3 seasons of arbitration

Uggla is a disaster. The Marlins are winning this on the field not even accounting what the Marlins are going to do with that extra $50 million the next 4 seasons. If you add in Javy Vazquez to the mix this season (.8 WAR), Marlins WAR based on Uggla's salary is 1.6.

Marlins are "winning" the trade handedly, and will continue to win not having that albatross contract on the books.

Gaby should only be traded IF the trade is good and LoMo starts 1B. If I were a GM I ask for CF or 3B majors or minor leagues. Or just more BP help. 5th starter rotation. Something.

I'd trade Helms for......baseball bats. Stanton keeps breaking them.

Really surprised we aren't moving forward with any trades at all. I figured either Nunez or Choate was as good as gone. Supposedly the team is not very thrilled with the offers they've received, so barring some last minute thing we're not moving anyone.
