Posted January 18, 201213 yr Two bills before Congress, known as the P rotect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, are meant to stop online piracy but would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American businesses. Experts agree that there are better ways to shut down pirate websites than asking US companies to censor the Web. Join the groundswell of experts, organizations and people from all parts of America united in their opposition to SOP A and PIPA. Tell Congress not to censor the Web and not to cripple our innovation economy. The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel. Sign this petition [google.com] urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late. I don't know if everybody is aware of this new legislation they're trying to pass, go to google.com to find out more about SOPA/ PIPA.
January 18, 201213 yr What are the chances this happens? We're turning back the clock to the pre-napster days, lol.
January 18, 201213 yr Sometimes I really hate the idea of a Democratic Republic. Whoever drafted this... who do they think they are?
January 18, 201213 yr President Obama does not support SOPA. http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngaudiosi/2012/01/16/obama-says-so-long-sopa-killing-controversial-internet-piracy-legislation/
January 18, 201213 yr If you use NoScript, I think you can still use Wikipedia. You could also hit the escape button before it redirects.
January 19, 201213 yr Sometimes I really hate the idea of a Democratic Republic. Whoever drafted this... who do they think they are? I detect the sarcasm here, but it's worth noting that the problem isn't the system. Every 2 years, WE have the opportunity to vote the assholes out of office and yet never do so. The problem is that many citizens just don't pay close attention to the news and proceed to elect the bad guys into office. In other words, the citizenry as a whole usually gets the government it deserves. Partial sarcasm, partial seriousness. Dead serious about the latter portion of my post. FBI shut down megaupload.com today. Justified or not... it's sickening that they're targeting that and not something along the lines of... oh...The Pirate Bay?
January 19, 201213 yr Megaupload going down was a shot in my heart. Bastards. List of congressmen/women and their stance on SOPA/PIPA, now with pictures!
January 19, 201213 yr Anonymous attacked the DOJ, RIAA, MPAA sites in response. "attacks" Anonymous does nothing more than barrage the servers resulting in a temporary downtime in the website. Script kiddies crying for attention.
January 20, 201213 yr Author Seriously, google should protest by shutting down. Imagine if google shuts down for a day? It would be catastrophic. A lot of businesses use Gmail, not to mention their servers.
January 20, 201213 yr Pirate Bay has been targeted before. 'Targeted'. My point being that Pirate Bay has a defense in that they simply 'link' pirated material rather than host pirated material. megaupload.com was just shut down for hosting pirate software. Was megaupload right? Not for me to decide, but at the very least we can say that it was justifiable to shut it down. megaupload.com is a community-based website based on uploading and hosting general files of all types. Pirate Bay is a community-based website based on sharing copyrighted and stolen material. You tell me, is that justice? You hurt the lives of millions by shutting down such a great tool in megaupload where the majority of the users were not breaking the law and never had the intention of doing so. However, a site like Pirate Bay is cool to operate. Semantics and technicalities as according to the law. bulls***.

January 20, 201213 yr I'm really annoyed they took down megaupload/megavideo. How ever will I continue to not download and/or stream illegal movies/music?
January 20, 201213 yr I'm really annoyed they took down megaupload/megavideo. How ever will I continue to not download and/or stream illegal movies/music? New York City has drugs and illegal weapons. Should we shut down the whole city? And MegaUpload is not responsible for the content they store, nor can they possibly know what's being stored. The fact of the matter is that this is an illegal crackdown on a legitimate site.
January 20, 201213 yr Also worth noting, Megaupload (etc) is responsible for roughly 4% of all internet bandwidth.
January 20, 201213 yr It will be back, probably buried within another bill with the hope for it to be overlooked. This is only the beginning. EDIT: I read that all the candidates at the Republican debates oppose SOPA, but I can't help but wonder how many of them actually are against it on principle...

Wouldn't that be something to look up?

January 20, 201213 yr Does the United States government have the jurisdiction over Pirate Bay? Wouldn't that be something to look up? The Pirate Bay is a Swedish based site. MegaUpload is a Hong Kong based site. What's the point?
