April 25, 201214 yr Dayton Beach, FL - The Florida State League Office has announced the Player of the Week for the period April 16-22, 2012 named today. The Player of the period was Jupiter Hammerheads Outfielder Christian Yelich. In six games he had 10 hits in 20 plate appearances for a .500 batting average. His hits included two homeruns, two triples, and two doubles. He had five RBI's and scored seven times. He also had one stolen base. His OBP was .615 and his slugging average was 1.100. Christian's hometown is Westlake Village, CA. This is his third year of professional baseball. Yelich began the season the 7-day disabled list with some elbow discomfort but has had no trouble finding his stroke early in the 2012 season. The Hammerheads will play game two of a game-game series against the Bradenton Marauders tonight at McKechnie Field. May 2, 201214 yr Not saying it's a bad thing, but Yelich does seem to strike out at a high rate. 102 times last year in 521 PAs. The speed, however, impressed me - 32 for 37 in steals, 6 for 6 this season. Where would he project to bat in a Major League lineup once he's fully ready and experienced? He's looking like a #2 hitter to me at the moment.
May 2, 201214 yr I would agree with him being a #2 hitter in the future, he seems to have the potential to develop into a #3 hitter as he can hit for power also.
May 2, 201214 yr the strikeouts wouldn't concern me, as long as his walk numbers are solid, & they look like they should be. I've seen him pegged even as a #3 hitter. I think maybe more interesting is whether he can handle CF in the bigs or not. (I know he's playing there now) His arm isn't great so he'll have to make up for it with speed, reads, all that. I'd figure that most would project him to wind up in left field. Really hoping he gets a callup to Jax before the season is up so I can watch him. Not that him in left field is a bad thing, but a guy like that in CF is superstar stuff.

And, if he rakes there, don't be surprised to see him at the #2 hole this Sept. in a Miami Marlins uni. Assuming that he continues his stellar hitting here and AA, there would be nothing to prove in 2013. His weakness hitting against lefties isn't a concern for me, although it draws some concern.

Eh, I'd imagine more like a season and a half in AA, September callup 2013, starter 2014.
