July 25, 201212 yr That's a huge contract. I believe only Sabathia has ever been paid more in terms of pitchers contracts. This is definitely overpaying the guy. If I'm a Phillies fan, I would've rather traded Hamels for a huge return than to give him this kind of a poison pill deal.

It is pretty hard to justify that type of contract, but the Phils probably felt they had to do something since teams like the Dodgers would likely match or exceed this kind of deal in free agency. It's pretty much the market dictating what they were going to sign him to I think.
