And a pain in the Marlins side for years to come?

Damn, that's a ton of money. Does Anibal get $15MM per if Hamels gets $24MM per?

That's a huge contract. I believe only Sabathia has ever been paid more in terms of pitchers contracts.

This is definitely overpaying the guy. If I'm a Phillies fan, I would've rather traded Hamels for a huge return than to give him this kind of a poison pill deal.

Hamels will be the 4th Phillie to make 20+ mil annually on the team right now.

Yeah, it seems terrible, right? They have so many massive contracts, some of which look pretty bad right now.

As terrible as the Marlins have been, thanks to the Phillies they're still not last in the division.

That's a lot of money for a pitcher that has never won more than 15 games in a season.

Except we're 3-0 against Hamels this year and usually do decent against him.

They're also paying Joe Blanton 8 mil/yr.

The dreaded wins argument...

Overall stats, I wouldn't say he's worth anywhere near $144,000,000 over 6 years, though.

It is pretty hard to justify that type of contract, but the Phils probably felt they had to do something since teams like the Dodgers would likely match or exceed this kind of deal in free agency. It's pretty much the market dictating what they were going to sign him to I think.

11-1 against everyone else this year

0-3 against the Marlins this year, 6-10 lifetime

Yea that's overpaying if Ive ever seen it. Way too much for a pitcher.
