December 2, 200322 yr I don't think this has been posted, if it has, I apologize. Dec. 2 - Florida can't offer Rodriguez arbitration, per a clause in the one-year contract he signed last offseason, so this weekend's deadline represents the team's last chance to retain the catcher for 2004. The Palm Beach Post cites a source who says the team has verbally offered Rodriguez a two-year, $20 million deal, an increase from the team's previously reported two-year, $16 million offer. However, reports ahve indicated that Scott Boras, Pudge's agent, is seeking five years and $50 million. Baltimore is said to be interested, too, but reports say the Orioles are more likely to target a second-tier catcher than overpay for Pudge. ESPN Insider I like the years, I don't like the money.
December 2, 200322 yr I would rather pay pudge 2 Years 20 Million Its 10 million a year, which he was earning with us.
December 2, 200322 yr One of two things is true - 1. The Marlins are not serious about a $60 million payroll in 2004, or 2. They cannot offer Pudge $10 million in 2004. The two are mutually exclusive.
December 2, 200322 yr That's a lot of money, we are overpaying. if true then the FO is commited to bring him back. I wouldn't been surprised if Pudge signs that offer. Or the Marlins adds another year but lower to 8/per year.
December 2, 200322 yr Agreed. Offering the option for a 3rd year based on performance (a la Castillo) to get down to 8M makes good sense. I believe we still have a good chance to keep Pudge now that Lee, Castillo and Lowell are settled.

The two are mutually exclusive. what do u mean?? Exactly what it says but for reasons I can't definitively explain. The only way to sign Pudge for those $$$ is to increase payroll by at least 10 -15%. Perhaps its a negotiating ploy, "we only have so much to spend", etc. There may be other reasons, but the Marlins simply cannot stay within their announced spending cap (which I don't have to remind you includes $11 million in deferred compensation to Hampton and Pudge). See my post in the Redman thread.
December 2, 200322 yr Well if Boras and Pudge work with the Marlins to insert the deferred compensation he's owed into the new deal... it's closer at least.
December 2, 200322 yr Question: If the marlins re-sign Pudge at 2 years, 20 mill, and then trade Encarnacion for some prospects, and then let Uggie go and keep everyone else, what would likely be their approximate payroll next year?
December 2, 200322 yr It really depends on how arbitration goes, and whether Pudge is willing to defer addtional payments. If both of the above go well, and including the Hampton 8 mil, then it could be in the low 60s.

December 2, 200322 yr Well if Boras and Pudge work with the Marlins to insert the deferred compensation he's owed into the new deal... it's closer at least. I think you hit the nail on the head - for Pudge to agree to take a portion of each year's compensation on a deferred basis. Once we get done paying off Hampton we'll be in much better shape. If Pudge took (for illustration purposes only) $ 8 million a year for three years and deferred $3 million a year he would receive... $8mil year one - ($5 mil salary & $3 million from 2003 deferral) $8mil year two - ($5 mil salary & $3 million from 2003 deferral) $8mil year three - ($5 mil salary & $3 million from 2004 deferral) $3mil year four - (2005 deferral) $3mil year five - (2006 deferral)
December 2, 200322 yr 2 years/$20 million seems reasonable in my eyes. It's the same thing....$10 mill a year. That's fine. It's not $50 mill, that's for sure. LOL

LOL I still think 10 million a year is too much for a 30 something catcher with injury problems, but it's not too hard to swallow if it's only a 2 year committment.
December 2, 200322 yr 10 million is too much imo no one else if offering anything or even considering him so why should we overpay for him. I think 8 million seems more reasonable and maybe add a third year if he meets some sort of requirement on games played or at bats.

December 2, 200322 yr Gotta agree. Why pay $10 mil /year when there are no competing offers on the table? It's simple economics. Pudge may reject a good offer (8 mil, partially deferred sounds good) from Beinfest if he feels like it's not enough, but if he does he'll likely spend the rest of the off-season sweating it out.
December 2, 200322 yr It should be interesting to see what other offers he gets. Me? I'd like Pudge to return, so this offer doesn't offend me. If we lose a few important players to free up the money, then maybe I'll be singing a different tune.
December 3, 200322 yr I still think 3 years / 8 mil per is the fairest for both sides. Pudge gets a very good amount plus security, Marlins can afford to sign him w/o "special money". Why hasn't this happened? Oh yeah, Scott Boras.

Not everything that happens is reported or rumored. Remember the D Lee trade. I don't think anyone saw that coming. In addition, time is against us due to the Dec 7 thing. Nothing we can do about it. I think the Marlins FO not making any formal offers at the beggining was a brilliant strategy. If they would have negotiated with Pudge at the beggining, it would have been the biggest mistake. They would have over paid by a lot or talk would have gone nowhere, and we would have wasted precious time to deal with Castillo and Lowell. Now, Pudge had 4 weeks to see what kind of interest was out there. And the Marlins are in the drivers seat. There is not a lot of time, but I think Pudge has the same or more interest in returning as our FO. I think we are in the drivers seat, if he doesn't sign is not the end of the world. I think Beinfest will come again on top on the strategy game.
December 3, 200322 yr I like the offer. I hope he excepts so we can contend once again for a World Series Title!!
December 3, 200322 yr I like the offer. I hope he excepts so we can contend once again for a World Series Title!! yup-he was a big part of us winning the WS last year...
December 3, 200322 yr Pudge @ $10M is too rich for my blood. We could get Vlad for 13. Heck of a difference in offense - and we got Castro to play catcher. Marlins2003 got it right with his synopsis. Either the Marlins are not serious about the $60M payroll line - it isnt hard and fast (and I dont think it is) OR they are not offering $10M per for Pudge. I just cant believe that we would offer so much money for Pudge, 2 year deal though would be reasonable. I am surprised at how much of this team is actually being kept in tact - I thought we would be losing Castillo, Pudge, Lee and Enc (as well as Urbina). But so far, 1 is back and another is being offered a deal.
December 3, 200322 yr i hope somebody offers him more. pudge please leave... this is gonna be just like the kendall contract... an ok player paid 5 times his worth
December 3, 200322 yr he is overpaid if he recieves this deal because boras is looking for 5 yr 50 mill and u tell me who the hell is gonna pay that? no 1! when we gave him a 1 yr 10 mill last year that was considered overpaid and it was a one year deal..but to do it again for 2 yrs? id say with those 10 mill u could sign ugie back or another closer,or look for more bullpen help..i love pudge but 10 mill is 2 much with no other offers out there..i say a 2 yr 8.5 mill with an incentive option for 3rd yr would be good
