Posted June 24, 201311 yr Finally, Red has come to his senses and put Ruggiano in the lineup against righties and JP is hanging out in the batting cages... Discuss!
June 24, 201311 yr I love what I'm seeing, they just have to keep winning series, and i think sf underestimated the marlins. Good teams get good breaks and for the last week we had lots of these.
June 24, 201311 yr We are playing better but we need to do better in close games. Evovaldi looked good and his control has been solid. With his stuff if he keeps it around the plate he can be very effective. Ruggiano needs to be starting most games. Pierre was playing very well but he shouldnt be in the lineup more than Ruggiano when he has no power and no arm. He should get 1-2 starts a week.
June 24, 201311 yr Coghlan will be back soon and Rugianno will be back platooning except for the days Red benches Ozuna.
June 24, 201311 yr We have to admit that this is a completely different team than what was placed on the field for Opening Day. I've been really surprised how much better this team is now playing.
June 24, 201311 yr Coghlan will be back soon and Rugianno will be back platooning except for the days Red benches Ozuna. Where did you hear that he will be back soon?
June 24, 201311 yr 6-4 in our last 10 games against the Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Giants is a good step up from what we were doing before. We've had a chance to win every one of those games, a lot were close games that could've been losses too. The point being... its good to be in games and competing rather then being in blowouts. There's still a LOT of work to be done to make them more consistent, but meh... just enjoy this for what it is.
June 24, 201311 yr Damn Evovaldi looks nasty! I don't remember him throwing so hard with LA. With all the minor league talant we have to go along with some good ML youngsters I'm feeling pretty good about the future. That is till they become free agents and play for the Dodgers or Yankees.
June 24, 201311 yr Coghlan will be back soon and Rugianno will be back platooning except for the days Red benches Ozuna. ---------------------------------------------------------------- I think Marsnick will be up any day now and they give him a chance to play CF and move Ozuna to left. Then Ruggs will be trade bait. If he don't work out Yelich will get his chance this year rather then next.

We've had a chance to win every one of those games, a lot were close games that could've been losses too. The point being... its good to be in games and competing rather then being in blowouts. Yup. And, speaking of blowouts, if you define a blowout as losing by 6 runs or more, we ain't too bad -- without slogging though anything other than the NL East -- number of 6+ run "blowouts" lost - ATL - 6 WSH - 9 PHI - 11 (!) NYM - 7 MIA - 7 Which speaks to our generally decent pitching. Team ERA is 4.00 and if you knock out the 31 earned runs allowed by 4 guys who aren't here anymore -- Maine, Rauch, Olmos and Below -- it's about 3.6. And, no, I didn't check 5 runs or 7 runs or any other number of runs, 6 just seemed like a reasonable definition of "blowout."
June 24, 201311 yr 5+? OK -- but sticking with 6+, the Marlins are involved with more "close" (or semi-"close") losses than anyone else in the NL East, as they have the lowest percentage of losses by 6+ run "blowouts." Losses by 6+ runs as percentage of total losses: MIA - 14% NYM - 17% ATL - 18% WSH - 24% PHI - 28% Whatsamatta with Philly? :lol

Probably many of those Phillies blowouts could be attributed to Halladay who was apparently pitching while injured all season before going on the DL. The Marlins aren't the only team to have ERA inflated by outliers.
June 24, 201311 yr Author Coghlan will be back soon and Rugianno will be back platooning except for the days Red benches Ozuna. If Dietrich keeps hitting like shit, I would look for Coghs to move to third, Polanco to second, and Dietrich down to Triple-A... Keep the OF the way it was tonight. Those three guys are our hitters right now.
June 24, 201311 yr I really don't care about it particularly, it was just interesting in view of how bad this team was expected to be. They're not getting blown out at a high rate. Just an observation that makes the point that the pitching has been much better than expected, and can only get better yet as the young guys gain more experience. Add some more bats and you have a contender. Maybe Beinfest isn't as stupid as some have made him out to be.

Add some more bats and you have a contender. Maybe Beinfest isn't as stupid as some have made him out to be. People expected the pitching to be somewhat decent even if the entire team would suck. The biggest concern has always been the offense. The number of blowout losses means absolutely nothing; it just says that the pitching has been consistent and not subject to a lot of outliers (like Halladay's shoulder giving out). The team's ERA for starting pitchers is still last in the NL East. That's a more important statistic than the percentage of 6+ run losses (or whatever other arbitrary BS you are trying to put together).
June 24, 201311 yr Trying to put together? :lol It was just a miscellaneous observation. Regardless of our starter's ERA, we're not getting blown out at a much higher rate than everyone else, as was widely expected -- to the contrary, we're getting blown out at a lesser rate than the rest of the division. I'm sorry if that doesn't comport with the expected stats of a historically bad team. What, are you disappointed that Beinfest doesn't look like an idiot? That those Spiders graphics now look a bit silly?
June 24, 201311 yr Who said that the Marlins were going to get blown out most games? Again, the starting pitching was not expected to be a disaster (blowouts likely correlate more with bad arms in the rotation). In other words, the back end of the rotation arms have simply been consistently mediocre. The concern was always that guys like Polanco, Pierre, Hechavarria, Brantly/Mathis, Solano, etc wouldn't hit at all. That concern has proven to be a reality. And nobody seriously expected the Marlins to rival the Cleveland Spiders. That was a joke. We expected a ~100-110 loss team, which is exactly what we are getting. If the Marlins go on another losing streak, you'll see the graphics again.
June 24, 201311 yr I have no problem sending Dietrich down to the Zephyrs at this point. He had some nice moments, but he's shown he still needs work and isn't ready to be on a major league team at this point. Do a flip flop with Dietrich down to AAA and Solano getting the 2B job with the big league squad. Speaking of which, if we had any kind of replacement for either player, Rob Brantly and Adeiny Hechavarria would be down to the minor leagues so quickly. Brantly's a liability both on defense on at the plate at this point, and no matter how decent Hechavarria is on defense it doesn't make up for an OPS below .600. Most players with OPS' under .700 don't belong in a major league starting lineup, let alone a hundred points lower. Long term, the future lineup needs a LOT of new faces. We're not even close to the end of the rebuilding mode... C: FIND A NEW GUY 1B: Morrison 2B: Dietrich (still have faith in him, just needs patience) SS: FIND A NEW GUY 3B: Moran LF: Yelich CF: Ozuna RF: Stanton That's two empty holes, not including the fact that Morrison hasn't done anything since his rookie season, Dietrich is still a relative unknown, Moran hasn't played a game in the minors, Yelich hasn't proven himself in the majors, and Ozuna is another relative unknown despite his decent performance this season. There's a lot of questions in that lineup. The team doesn't even need to spend a ton of money in free agency, but they have to address key needs with a strategy other than "Hey, let's find some 35+ year old guy who no other team wants and start him everyday!". Either that or use the trade deadline to grab people who fit needs within the lineup. We have depth at the starting position position in the minors, use the Nolasco/Slowey/Cishek/Webb/etc... trades to try and find at least one guy who can start in 2014 and put up an OPS over .600 at catcher, shortstop, or third base. I really don't think that's too much to ask for.
June 24, 201311 yr Stanton here long term would be a shocker. Cleveland Spiders sound like a Arena Football or WNBA team.
June 24, 201311 yr The owner of the Cleveland Spiders was actually the Jeffrey Loria of the 19th century.

I really don't think that's too much to ask Brantly was rushed to the majors, I still feel he has the ability to adjust and eventually hit for both average and power. I think it is a bit soon to say he is a complete flop. he has 300 at bats in the majors over the course of his career and he has been league average. Give him time, and when I say time that means an entire season, not 170 at bats. Hech on the other hand, what was our front office thinking with hech and alvarez?

If the Marlins go on another losing streak, you'll see the graphics again. Seriously? The previous massive piling-on by "we" has now somehow morphed into just a joke? They're 12-9 since 5-30. 7-5 since both Morrison and Stanton were back on 6/10. Eovaldi's back. Turner is back. Alvarez will be back soon. That's a .500+ team for the rest of the year. They'll probably win 43 (or maybe more) games, and win about as many (or maybe more) than the 100+ mill payroll team won (69) last year. For 70 mill less in payroll. They would have to go 37-50 to lose 100. 27-60 to lose 110. Neither is likely, barring further injuries -- they have too much talent. Add a bat or two to the current talent and you have a contender. Gosh, maybe Beinfest, et al aren't the idiots they have been made out to be.
